Pioli discusses Milan’s characteristics and condemns racial abuse: “No one deserves it”

After the game between AC Milan and Cagliari, which ended 1-0 in favour of the Rossoneri, Stefano Pioli spoke to the media about the performance. He was also forced to speak about some more disturbing matters.

Just after the final whistle, Milan and Cagliari players ended up in a brawl as racist abuse was heard from the stands towards certain Rossoneri players. Fikayo Tomori turned to the Cagliari ultras section and put his finger towards his ear, which the home players didn’t appreciate.

Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by MilanNews, Pioli shares his thoughts on the matter and also the performance of the Rossoneri. He was also asked about the fact that this was Milan third consecutive 1-0 win.

On the win…

“An important victory, all the games are important and difficult. We played a good game, I liked the team: we played with quality and intensity. The opponent put us in difficulty, but it’s normal.”

Third consecutive 1-0 for Milan: is this the road to football paradise?

“The best way is to kill the games, but we are working very well with and without the ball with great sacrifice and collaboration. This is the way.”

In January 2011, Milan won 0-1 at Cagliari thanks to Strasser and then won the Scudetto…

“We are doing excellent things, but we also know that there are four teams that can win the Scudetto. The schedule is very complicated for everyone, it’s useless to look too far ahead. Let’s focus on our path which is positive: let’s not go further.”

Milan full-backs are often open and close to the action.

“I’m fortunate to have two very intelligent full-backs, who know how to read spaces. Today, Cagliari were aggressive on the flanks and left us more space on the pitch. We were good. When you have intelligent and willing players, everything becomes easier. We are having a good season, but it’s still long.”

Today Milan showed an excellent attitude…

“The mentality must be that of tonight. I liked them a lot. What matters is having the right mentality without being influenced too much by the temporary result.”

After Salernitana and Udinese, today an excellent performance by Milan…

“We are devoted to attacking, to always creating danger and if we do that we attack even better. We are not able to defend low. Each team has its characteristics, I like these and we are capable of doing it.”

Are you worried about the missed chances? What can a coach do?

“We have to try these things again in training. To score goals you need quality and determination and they are things that can be trained on. We have to close games when we have the possibility, otherwise, we risk not winning.”

What happened at the end of the game?

“Maignan told me that he received (racist) insults from fans behind the goal. I’m sad to hear this, no one deserves any kind of insult.”

Milan are now six points ahead of their city rivals Inter and remain three points ahead of Napoli. It’s becoming clear that Pioli’s men have a great opportunity that they must seize.

  1. A great job done ,but it’s kind of worry the way they struggle to beat these mid-table clubs, something must be done quickly about it.

    1. Ac Milan is not struggling to beat them, do u know that we are at the end of the season now all this clubs we be hard to win because no one want to lose now, see inter Milan, Napoli, juv, they win by just one goal line.

  2. A very hard fought win, but an important win nevertheless. The team still has issues in the last quarter and the decision making is always hasty and sometimes random.
