Pioli gives possible reason for numerous muscle problems and insists club ‘are working hard on it’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli believes that the team’s injury situation will improve but blames a chaotic schedule for some of the muscle problems.

In addition to the absences of Davide Calabria, Ante Rebic, Olivier Giroud, Pietro Pellegri and Simon Kjaer, Antonio Vitiello of MilanNews reported earlier today that Rafael Leao suffered a strong muscular contusion in the back of his right thigh during Saturday’s win against Salernitana and is likely to miss the game against Liverpool.

Pioli spoke to the media who gathered for his pre-match press conference at Milanello and he was asked if he received any information about why the squad are suffering from so many muscle injuries, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“We are working hard on it. The fact that we play a lot can be a reason. We are trying to do everything to try to preserve the players, to protect them, so I am doing even more rotations than last year. Now we have to grit our teeth, until December 22 we have to collect as much as we can, then I’m sure the situation will improve,” he said.

Pioli also spoke during an interview with Sky Italia about the injury situation and did not want to make it an excuse, with MilanNews again relaying his words.

“I believe in it because we wanted it, we have created this possibility. In the great difficulties of the Liverpool match we have shown that we can put the teams in difficulty. Absences? We can feel sorry for ourselves or unite and try to overcome difficulties as a team. We are sure that we have chosen the second path.

“Liverpool have great speed and quality in attacking players, they know how to play vertically very well. We will have to be very careful and make team choices. It will have to be a Milan-worthy night, we have only one chance and we must play it tomorrow.”
