Pioli praises ‘excellent’ Gabbia and discusses importance of Kjaer: “He’s a leader”

By Isak Möller -

Ahead of the clash between AC Milan and Atalanta tomorrow, Stefano Pioli was asked about the recent performances of Matteo Gabbia during his presser. The manager only had good things to say about the academy product, as you would expect.

Gabbia returned from his loan at Villarreal in January and has since been a key player for the Rossoneri. Even though Milan have conceded too many goals, the 24-year-old has impressed individually and has often saved the team from conceding even more.

Asked about Gabbia during his press conference today, and whether the presence of Simon Kjaer helps, Pioli only had good things to say about the two centre-backs…

“Kjaer is a leader, he knows how to speak at the right time. Speaking on the pitch is very important. His presence is certainly helping Gabbia. Matteo is doing excellent things with and without Simon. He applies himself and wants to be in the right place at the right time. He is doing very well,” he stated.

As per the latest reports, Malick Thiaw will replace Kjaer in the starting XI tomorrow, with Gabbia keeping his spot in the heart of the defence. This is likely because the Dane needs rest, having started against Stade Rennes on Thursday evening.

  1. ‘Excellent’ so he’ll stick with him when the defenders we bought return?

And if he does a Thiaw this season or Tomori last season he’ll be given the benefit of the doubt like the signings?
