Pioli praises ‘exceptional’ Milan in 2020 and jokes about Ibrahimovic’s goal record

AC Milan finished the season in the best way possible, beating Cagliari comfortably at the San Siro with a 3-0 scoreline. Although they didn’t reach fifth place, Stefano Pioli and his men deserve a lot of praise.

The Rossoneri took the lead early on this evening through an own-goal, after Rafael Leao managed to beat his opponent on the left flank. Unfortunately, the Portuguese striker had to leave the pitch with an injury, having looked very promising indeed.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty just before half-time but got his revenge in the second half, sending a rocket past the goalkeeper to double Milan’s lead. Samu Castillejo then killed the game with the third goal, assisted by Jack Bonaventura.

In his post-match interview with MilanTV, as cited by MilanNews.it, Pioli shared his thoughts on the game and the season as a whole. He also spoke about the goals for the upcoming season.

42 points in one half: “The boys were exceptional, a fantastic return with excellent performances. Beyond the positive results, it was important to create a mentality, it must be a basis on which to build an even more satisfying future.”

AC Milan’s goalscoring: “We have confidence and conviction, we also need quality. It means that we have these values. We close the season with satisfaction. We hoped we would not have to do the playoffs but we will face them with conviction. We need to close the gap with the top teams.”

On Ibra: “Don’t tell him he’s the oldest to have scored 10 goals in Serie A (laughs, ed). He is a champion in everything he does, he has made a very important contribution. Our improvements have gone hand in hand, individually and collectively. The boys will have a well-deserved rest but soon they will have to resume training at home as during the lockdown.”

On what can be improved: “We can improve on many things, we must consolidate the good one done this year but we must already think about improving. We will get to know each other better, this team has to improve and I don’t think that if we have to arrive sixth again next year we will be happy.”

The goal for next year: “The goal is to improve and grow, to be aware of being a great club. We can’t wait to find our fans again.”
