Pioli reveals what he said in the dressing room after dour Roma display

By Ben Dixon -

Following Thursday night’s performance against AS Roma in the Europa League, AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli has shared what he told the players in the dressing room after the fixture.

Given the magnitude of the fixture, Milan’s display was disappointing on so many levels. However, the flip side of this is that there is only a singular goal between the sides, so hope is by no means lost going into the second leg of the tie.

Several elements were missing from the Rossoneri side seen in recent weeks and the one seen in the tie, and that will be majorly disappointing for Pioli, considering how much is at stake regarding his future.

Reports leading up to this month and the match itself emphasised the significance of positive results, and failing to get those re-opens talks about his future – albeit this time with a potentially sour view.

Following the loss, Pioli spoke to the media about the fixture and what he told his players in the dressing room – his words have been relayed by MilanNews.

Did Roma surprise you?

“It didn’t surprise us, they only changed sides, El Shaarawy who did what he usually does on the left. In the first half, we weren’t so sharp, so lucid without the ball, we weren’t aggressive. It was not our best game from the point of view of quality.”

Worried by the lack of aggression?

“You are aggressive when the distances are right. I think the team was very generous, but not with the courage and the right distances that we needed to have.”

How steep is Milan’s climb?

“The climb is steep because the level has risen, but I’m convinced the team can play at a higher level and if we play at that level we have every chance of playing. That’s what I told the team after the game.”

    1. Hei.. Pioli give scudetto and second in league now. We make a lot money qualifying for champion league next season.

It doesn’t matter we lose to big team at cup, because we bullying the weak team at league, we are second now.

      1. Tell me you represent everything that is wrong with Milan fanbase, without telling me you represent everything that is wrong with Milan fanbase.

  1. “I’m convinced the team can play at a higher level and if we play at that level we have every chance of playing”

    Inspiring stuff!

    1. The only thing i can think of is that it must be a typo or a bad translation or something because if the last word instead is winning instead of playing it actually makes a lot more sense than currently.

  2. “The climb is steep because the level has risen, but I’m convinced the team can play at a higher level and if we play at that level we have every chance of playing”

You know too much sugar also will annoy as time goes on.

I don’t think any player in the dressing room wanted to listen some philosophical sh*t coming out of Pioli’s mouth to be honest.

  3. With all due respect, the same system in 5 years. Even I know how Milan will play, imagine De Rossi….. Change it is needed!!! & I hope that they know what they are doing, if they keep him, we will see the same Milan for the sixt year… So boring…

  4. Remember when piolol came here in the middle of 2019 after Marco Giampaolo, the management almost sacked him in the winter afterwards.

  5. Pioli problem is he don’t adaptive enough mid game. And it is clearly shown in matches against Monza 4-2, bottled 2 goals lead against Napoli and Lecce, and the worst is against inter.

In all of those games opponent manager changes the tactics but Pioli only change players while the tactics remains the same.

Simone Inzaghi utilize Dumbphries as full back, wing back, wings in flat 4 midfield, and defensive midfielder in the game against Milan. While Pioli can’t even use his 3 midfielders in defensive phase.

You’re a decent manager, but Milan need to move on from you to be better.
