Pioli believes Salzburg draw is a ‘positive result’ but was not a ‘high level performance’

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli was not happy with the performance from his side against Red Bull Salzburg, accusing them of being sloppy in too many situations.

Milan were not at their free-flowing best quite like the Derby della Madonnina win over Inter on Saturday but they did show good character to come from behind against an intense and difficult opposition to earn a draw.

Noah Okafor had put the home side ahead before Rafael Leao set up Alexis Saelemaekers for the equaliser and in the end the shares were spoiled with a team that did not lose at home in the Champions League last season including even their knockout game against Bayern Munich.

Pioli spoke to Sky after the game to reflect on the result and the performance from his side, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews.

On the draw: “It’s a good result, unfortunately we didn’t have a high level performance. They started better than us, then we grew into it. We could have done better, we still got a positive result even if we wanted to win.”

On the performance: “The guys are the first to know when we play well and when we don’t. At the beginning we didn’t do well on the second balls. We lacked a bit of clarity in the technical plays. We had to be faster in the setting phase, we had to find better solutions. The team had to be more compact in order to recover more second balls.”

On the difficulties: “We suffered their counters and we weren’t good in transitions. They didn’t press that hard, we made a little too many mistakes.”

On the position of Tonali: “I wanted to create numerical superiority on the wings, but he didn’t play as a winger.”

On the Champions League group: “Dinamo’s victory surprised me. This must teach us that in football there are no obvious matches. Salzburg are a good team. The next match against Dinamo Zagreb will already have an important weight.”

On the changes: “They came on well. Dest has arrived recently, he still needs to know our game. He has good qualities, however. Origi has had a difficult summer, he needs to play and minutes. Pobega has put his characteristics into the game, that is physicality and runs behind. I am satisfied, with so many matches we need everyone.”

    1. The draw means that if Milan win all their home matches they’ll most likely qualify for the next round. So in that sense it was positive.
