Pioli talks through the three big selection dilemmas he faces ahead of Empoli game

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has dropped some hints regarding the selection decisions he faces ahead of tomorrow night’s game against Empoli at home.

Theo Hernandez’s suspension means that there is a gap at left-back and although Fode Ballo-Toure is the only available player who naturally plays that role, there is a lot of speculation that Alessandro Florenzi could again shift over there just as he did against Sampdoria last month.

Then there is the decision about whether to stick with the midfield three of Ismael Bennacer, Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie that got the job done against Napoli at the weekend, plus whether Pierre Kalulu or Alessio Romagnoli start at centre-back.

Pioli spoke to the reporters who gathered at Milanello for his pre-match press conference on the eve of the game against Empoli and discussed a number of different topics, including the choices he must make for the starting XI.

“Tonali is fine as well as Kessie, Bennacer and Diaz. We play with 11, you know how important it is to have different characteristics on the bench. I am very confident because we have the right players to start the game and to have solutions for the game in progress,” he said.

How will you choose between Romagnoli and Kalulu?

“Technique, I’ll try to field the best line-up. Who I think is the best of the two I will line up from the start. Alessio is fine after the injury, we will see who starts tomorrow.”

On Theo’s replacement: “I really liked Florenzi with Sampdoria, at the moment I would prefer Calabria on the right and Florenzi on the left. We’ll see tomorrow.”
