GdS: ‘A wizard of tactics’ – Pioli’s intuitions continue to bring Milan big results

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli is earning a reputation as being one of the best tacticians in Serie A as his ideas continue to bring results, a report claims.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) report how Pioli knows the strengths and weaknesses of the team perfectly and knows how to rotate his players according to the moment, the needs and the opponent. The paper describes him as ‘a wizard of tactics’ because of his ability to adapt to situations, reinventing Milan as the needs dictate.

In response to the 4-2-3-1 of Luciano Spalletti’s Napoli on Sunday night for example, he had the intuition of moving to a more flexible 4-1-4-1, with Tonali a Regista and Kessie alongside Bennacer to give muscle.

Pioli is always finding new solutions such as utilising Mike Maignan’s long balls or the cuts inside from the full-backs (Theo Hernandez above all), and then of course the move to put Kessie as an attacking midfielder against Empoli plus the use of Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a quarterback. With Pioli at the helm, Milan will get the most out of their squad.

    1. Erm…. Of course the quarterback is a position in American football but when the term is used with respect to soccer, then it probably refers to a central midfielder and the article talks about Pioli’s improvisations of which dropping Ibra too deep to play as a pseudo central midfielder is a part of. Guy has good hold up play and is also good at releasing the ball to an overlapping Theo so yeah the guy wasn’t wrong – I guess – when he wrote about Ibra being a quarterback equivalent.

    2. You can’t use your brain and understand something new? It is explained perfectly, you have to be mentally impaired not to understand or have an issue with it.
