Player Ratings: AC Milan 0-0 Empoli – Tonali stands out; Origi horror

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan failed to build on their win against Napoli, held to a draw by Empoli at San Siro this evening. There was one disappointing performer in particular and below are all the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): Empoli had just one shot on target the entire game so he didn’t have much to do, but he was always quick to start the build-up phase.

Calabria (6): He was good in the defensive phase and had a couple of good crosses in attack, not to mention a cheeky nutmeg. A solid display, in other words, and not much more.

Thiaw (6.5): He was very strong in the duels and really commanded the defence along with his centre-back partner. It’s clear he has grown a lot in these last few months.

Tomori (6.5): Just like Thiaw, the Englishman did well at the back and kept the dangers at a minimum. He had no issues against Empoli starlet Baldanzini and remained calm.

Hernandez (6): He constantly pushed forward and his work in the defensive phase wasn’t bad either. However, perhaps the final touch was lacking when moving forward.

Pobega (5.5): He started the game well and had more than one good pass, not afraid to send it long or switch sides. Unfortunately, though, he faded a lot as the game went one, hence the rating.

Tonali (6.5 – MOTM): He was everywhere tonight and made several spectacular interceptions. He’s turning more and more into Gattuso in that sense. He also did really well on one occasion to fire away a shot but it was saved.

Saelemaekers (6.5): A good evening after the really good performance against Napoli. In the first half, he was the main source of creativity and he did well in the second too, even if he couldn’t help Milan break the deadlock.

Bennacer (5.5): He started well and made himself available but didn’t have the same effect as against Napoli. Perhaps it was a bit too defensive almost, as things improved up front when he went off.

Rebic (5.5): It must be said that compared to previous displays from him, this was a huge step in the right direction. He was comfortable on the ball and linked up well with his teammates. He did, however, miss a big chance at the start of the first half.

Origi (3.5): It’s hard to know where to start with this guy. The Empoli defence took care of him with ease and on a couple of occasions the delivery seemed perfect, but the striker just couldn’t provide the final touch when needed. He was rightfully booed.

Substitutes

Florenzi (6): His crossing was needed for Milan at the end when they pushed for the winner. He thought he had got the assist for Giroud but VAR intervened. He also hit the post with a low-driven effort.

Diaz (5.5): He did have a somewhat positive impact on the game but he missed a big chance at the end. His effort was simply too tame.

Giroud (5.5): He was nearly the hero tonight but apart from the disallowed goal, we didn’t see enough really.

Leao (6): Beat his man more often than not but it just never came to anything dangerous in the end. Still a big difference to Rebic.

De Ketelaere (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. Origi… Please sell this shit!!! If nobody wants him leave him on the bench, bring up some youth but his absolute shit. Rather give our youth a chance. Please, I doubt they can be worse then this.

    1. Origi will become a club legend in Milan (too): He will be remembered as the worst striker who has ever played for the Rossoneri.

      1. I second that. I don’t EVER want to see him play again. (Unless he joins Inter. Then I want to see him play a lot but that’s a whole another story.)

    1. What a stupid decision by Pioli

Why start Rebic or Origi or Pobega.
They are all colossal. So awful from Benecer, Rebic, Origi and Pioli.

Pioli gets all the blame for this result

      1. He forgot that Origi can’t do sh*t. That guy shouldn’t be a professional player as even the lowest divisions have faaaaar better players than him.

  2. Can’t win with Pobega and the rest of the second team. This year it was out undoing. The whole reason to get into the first team is to show the coach the second team can perform. No wonder why Pioli only uses the same guys all the time.

Also, why was the handball conclusive on the Giruod goal that was called back? It looked inconclusive to me

  3. The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result. This is how I can sum up Pioli starting eleven, everyone else knew we can’t score with Origi and Rebic but no Mister Pioli. Mind you Napoli start their best eleven

  4. Best tactic vs Milan, park the bus and sit back. The lack of creativity is the main issue. Our midfielders can’t pass the ball if their life depends on it.
Bennacer deserves the same grade as Origi. As bad Origi was , Bennacer was worse.
For me Saelemakers was the best on the field, Tonali also had pretty good game defensively.
Pobega wasn’t bad. He was the only midfielder that can actually send a long pass.
Rebic and origi should be gone this summer.
Hopefully we play much better on Wednesday. If we lose to Napoli is because we beat ourselves, not because Napoli is the better team.
Sad part is Juventus with 15 points penalty will finish ahead of both Milan and inter on the table

  5. I’m pretty sure Milan took a gamble with this game. I don’t blame Pioli for anything. These players can’t just get paid and play this bad, especially Origi, the guy’s terrible. We can’t risk our star players cos of this game. He should be gone already. We need to focus more on the champions league, atleast for now… We just have to beat Napoli to qualify to the next round.

  6. Pobega needs to be played in more attacking role same as in Torino. Basicly Bennacer and Pobega places should have been swaped. Bad choice by Pioli.

    1. Exactly. I really don’t understand Pioli’s obsession to field Pobega as a DM when it’s 100% clear he’s an attacking midfielder. And Bennacer was the 2nd worst player on the pitch last night. He was AWFUL.

  7. Next UCL match should use all power house team from the start since nah-poli win the last match in contrary of this team. Thus making the next match very interesting.

  8. Pioli has only about 12 players in the squad that are worth a damn.
2 of them, Leao and Brahim had injuries, Giroud who is 36 has played every 3 days since August, and people are upset because the coach decided to rest them before an important UCL game.
Maybe you should look to blame the man who provided Pioli with this squad of only 12 players that are any good.
We have played this whole season with only 1 striker, who again is 36 soon to be 37 years old.
Should Pioli play the same 11 players every game and run them into the ground?
Or maybe the solution is playing the supertalents Vranckx, adli and CDK, coming from relegation squads in france and Germany? Instead of putting CDK in the game, Pioli is better off putting a drunk fan from the stands, and the fan will look more like a professional player than CDK does.
Messi Ronaldinho and Zidane can’t help Origi and Rebic score.
Maldini gave Pioli, a 36 year old Giroud (man deserves a statue in fron of the stadium) 41 year old Zlatan,( played 1 game all season) and Origi ( he and CDK are top 2 worst signings in Milan history) as strikers option and people have the nerve to criticize Pioli.
Pioli has done miracles with what his director has provided him with these last 2 seasons. Miracles

    1. Ofc blame the talented CdK. I bet you were among those idiotic fans who have no clue about football and wanted to sell Tonali, Leao, Bennacer, Donnarumma, Calhanoglu, Kessié or Brahim had their 1st season/s at AC Milan when all of them struggled on their first season. Btw Kessié and Leao needed 2 whole seasons to adapt and get good. So please..don’t try to look like you know something about football. If you want complete players since day 1, then I suggest you to be a PSG, City or Chelsea fan 😉

      1. Football expert @TraitOr
There is a big difference between struggling and looking like you have never played football before.
Btw Leao first season age 20.
        6 goals, 2 assists,
        2nd season
        6 goals, 6 assists.
Now tell me what your talented CDK has given us this season.
The funniest part about some of the people that comment on here is that those that are so quick to tell another person that he don’t have a clue about football, they are actually the ones that don’t know anything about football and you can tell by their emotional reaction.
None of the players you mentioned above struggled as bad as CDK has looked. None.
I’m sorry that my comment about CDK being trash, hurt your feelings

    2. I more than agree! By, against Empoli he should have used Messias and Krunic instead of Origi and Rebic who both are horrible!

    3. He has the Primavera, who are one of the best young teams in all of Europe. If he had the balls to try El Hilali, we wouldn’t be talking about Origi.

      1. One of the best young teams in Europe is one of the worst Primavera teams in Italy, fighting not to get relegated for the 2nd time In 3 years.
And what striker does our Primavera has to bring up?

  9. Origi is a fraud! I don’t get it with these guys, where was the urgency? How could they settle for playing so statically?

  10. Rube are going to be 2nd at this rate, both milan teams unable to get easy wins and don’t trust the roman teams to be consistent

  11. I fail to understand why Piolo keeps playing Origi and Rebic. They are not performing and cannot perform. Imagine a team playing with nine players!! It would be more appropriate to play a young player instead of them. Horrible. Mesias and Krunic should have been given a chance. Whilst I like Brahim, he keeps the ball too long and tries to pass when surrounded by two, three, or four players. He has to work for the team and not for himself!

  12. You can blame individual players but if we (or any top team) does not score early against bottom teams then it becomes extremely difficult to break them down.

This is attack against defence where the defenders are all highly competent, and are playing with less pressure (both to win and to create).

We simply have to treat the first 10 mins like we’re 2:0 down in the last 10 mins of a final.

And we simply can’t rest our best players. We need to get out of the blocks early, blow the other team away, get the result and then rest players. Every minute we go without scoring gives the other team confidence and let’s them settle into a grove.

  13. I have never raged Origi and he wasn’t a starter at Liverpool. Mane or Firmino would have made more sense than signing Origi.

Callum Hudson-Odoi would have made more or sense or Belotti.

Maldini got this totally wrong. Pobega also should have been sold to Torino and we should have used that money towards getting Amrabat.

With the 50m we had to spend last season it shows that Redbird cannot trust maldini and Massara with a low budget let a lone a bigger budget.

CDK played in the Belgian league which not as strong as the top 5 European leagues. EPL, Lá Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 so why would they think he is worth 35m? SMH

Cardinale wants to use the same formula they use at Toulouse to recruit players and I agree with them totally because signing players like Kalulu and Thiaw is a luck of the draw and that won’t always work out.

    1. “signing players like Kalulu and Thiaw is a luck of the draw and that won’t always work out.”

But the risk if far smaller than with CDK-type of purchases where hadn’t really proved anything yet. Yes, he played a couple of good UCL matches and scored in Belgium. So what? If you’re gonna spend 80% of the transferbudget on one player he better be a player who’s immediately making a notable impact. Positive one. Not the impact Origi is making.

  14. They were never going to score with this lineup. Origi, Rebic , Saleamakers and Pobega?? Never. This team cannot rest anyone ever because they have no depth at any position and that is a failure by Maldini.

    1. We might have depth on some positions but it’s impossible to know as Pioli doesn’t even try them.

It’s insane that players such as Origi gets the nod time after time after time when producing absolutely nothing yet Vranckx, Adli & co. are permanently glued to the bench. And you cannot blame Maldini for that. It’s like Pioli isn’t even trying.

  15. Even the dream team AC Milan with good crosser and passer like cafu, serginho, kaka, rui costa, pirlo, seedorf cannot help origi scoring goal. Origi quality are very bad and more worst lazy to chasing ball

  16. Don’t overanalyze this game. Our attack has always been awful and our only players who sometimes do very good things in attack are Leao, Giroud, and Diaz and we started none of them. Enough said.
