Player Ratings: AC Milan 0-1 Atalanta – Leao miss costly for Rossoneri

AC Milan lost by the odd goal against Atalanta despite a positive start to the second half, at which point the game was still tied. Several players could have done better and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): Atalanta had zero shots on target in the first half, and just two of them in total, so the goalkeeper wasn’t really tested tonight. Aside from the goal, he made a good save on Lookman towards the end. He was also solid with his feet, so a 6 feels appropriate.

Tomori (6.5): The Englishman had several clearances, some advanced ones as well, in the first half and continued to play well in the second. He also offered support in attack when needed and did that well, as we saw at the start of the second half.

Gabbia (6): Taking all of the battles with Retegui into account, the Milan product did enough to get a pass here, even if the goal stemmed from the Atalanta striker getting to the ball first. Some decent blocks from the Italian as well.

Pavlovic (5.5): While he did at least try, as always and especially in attack, this was a game to forget for him. He looked rather uncomfortable in the build-up and for some reason, he decided to push up just before Atalanta’s goal, leaving tons of space for Ederson.

Jimenez (6): He’s a tough one to judge because on the one hand, he offered a lot when going forward and combined well with his teammates. However, he also lost quite a few duels at the back against Lookman, even if he did better in the second half. Close to a 5.5, but just about a pass.

Fofana (6): The Frenchman had several good passes forward and intercepted the ball a lot, relying on his strength. He also ran with the ball a lot to create attacks for Milan. In short, he had 60-65 really good minutes but then, unfortunately, he was a bit wasteful in the decisive moments (hence the rating).

Reijnders (5.5): Yes, we saw some good things from him today, but he was far from his usual self in the decisive moments. He never really looked convinced of his choices and often tried to dribble too much when given the chance to shoot. The pass for Leao in the first half was good, but also easy to make.

Hernandez (6): Once again, it was confirmed that this formation suits him better. Good in both phases from the vice-captain tonight, without a doubt, and he showed his desire at the end of the game with good tracking back to make life difficult for Lookman.

Pulisic (5.5): Apart from a couple of good plays at the start of the second half, we didn’t really see much of him this evening. The set pieces were okay but not fantastic, far from his usual dangerous ones, so it was a game to forget.

Jovic (5.5): He missed a big chance at the end of the first half after doing everything so well. The shot was indeed poor and while we did see multiple good combinations from him, more than that is needed in a game like this.

Leao (5): Considering his quality on a good day, I’d almost be tempted to rate him at 4.5 after the missed chance in the first half. It looked like a certain goal when Reijnders played the pass, with perfect weight, and all the winger needed to do was make use of his trademark run. It’s a chance that he had to score and the miss proved costly.

Substitutes

Joao Felix (5.5): He added some energy to Milan’s attack, that much is true, but lacked the final touch – as seen before – with some good opportunities squandered.

Abraham (N/A): We didn’t really see enough to give him a rating, even if he came on at the same time as the Chelsea loanee. Atalanta had a lot more control of the game at that point.

Sottil (N/A): Just like Abraham, we didn’t see enough to give him a rating tonight, but he wasn’t awful.

Gimenez (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

Chukwueze (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

  1. Fofana 6? He is such an overrated player. He can only win duels and run forward with the ball. Very poor pass accuracy, very poor decision making, horrible shooting and also poor defensive reading as you can see in the goal. He should have just run with Ederson, very easy to read.

    1. When I watch him, he seems rather naïve. And agreed, he should’ve continued his run with Ederson. The central midfielders made shitty recovery runs and opened up a massive gap in front of the back line.

    2. I’ll talked about this since the beginning as it was painfully obvious but nobody wanted to see that as the new signing energy and hope was there.

There was a generic excuse about tiered leggs going around but it could never cover for the deficiencies he has to even be considered to start for AC Milan.

    1. Bellanova don’t want to renew with us, then he was sold for less then one milion € to France…he is not real Rossonero like Tonali

  2. They still start half asleep, the only difference now is, they don’t conced in first half.

And it’s still the midfield. Reijnders and Fofana offer nothing in midfield. Absolutely nothing. Never did.

    1. Reijnders’ offensive output strongly disagrees with your opinion. The fact that he’s being linked with big money moves to some of the biggest clubs also. It’s not his fault that Leao doesn’t know when to pull the trigger (or shoot with his left foot), or how to angle his run in such a way that Bellanova can’t catch up. It’s not Reijnders’ fault that we have 0 strikers that are useful. Reijnders is also not a defensive midfielder. He is a central attacking midfielder and perhaps maybe a mezzala. He’s chronically out of position in the double pivot, and even more mis-used when we play 3-4-3 because there is even less midfield cover. This is a coaching decision.

On Fofana, I agree more. He’s also misused in the double pivot, as I think he’d be better on the outside of a 3 man midfield in a 4-3-3. This is also a coaching decision. Then there is the original sin of the management decision to bring him in the first place. But remember last summer, when EVERYONE wanted Fofana, and people were castigating management for not getting the deal done fast enough?

Bottom line, our midfield is missing a certain type of player that has not existed since Kessie left. Tonali plugged the gap somewhat, but even Tonali wasn’t exactly the same type of player. Summer after summer, we’ve let this slip. We could have had Hjulmand for 20M straight from Lecce two summers ago, but we didn’t bother taking a look. Last summer we could have brought in Hojberg, but we also didn’t seem to bother. Do we really believe this ownership going to spend 40M on Ricci in a season we won’t be playing in the CL? I’m highly skeptical. And then, are we sure Ricci is really the DM we’re hoping for?

  3. Pulisic is useless in this new formation, can’t go past anyone and can’t use his shooting since he is too far away from goal. The defence is better, the mid is still weak. This is just a very poorly build team that no matter the formation or tactic it just won’t work cause to many players are incompatible with eachother.

      1. Exactly. He is really just a defender in the midfield. Little goes up the right side. I find it interesting he has not signed an extension. If this is Milan’s future, catering to Theo and Leão and not playing as a team he should consider leaving.

      2. Agreed. His form has dropped off since Conceicao took over. He was inarguably out best player in the first half of the season, and now seems a bit lost in the shuffle. I can’t wait for the season to end and for Conceicao to be off. He’s just not suited for this group of players.

    1. And we’re back to 90% of passes by the defense going up the left side. Puli wanders into the center to find the ball but still often can’t get a pass.

Theo and Fofana particularly never to pass to Pulisic.

He is our best finisher in the box, but this new strategy helps the defense while putting Pulisic into central midfield for some reason.

  4. Game was definitely better like last 5 games. Formation is ok. But that’s all .. After this lose it’s definitely the end for Conceicao. Even with Alegri we would be in top 4 and play better football… today I don’t blame guys, this games means they don’t have a chance to fight for CL or even EL… and is better to finish in 9th place and next year play just Seria A and Coppa, then play also Conference league ..Mirror for our management is perfect 👌, now only hope is they understend what kind of people must bring and what to do in summer…sometimes you need to fall … What you think about it Zlatan?

      1. These Como fans aka Maldini’s Heir be on our site wishing for AC Milan downfall. At least Inter fan for the most part has more tact and don’t often venture there

          1. What a dmba$$. It’s still AC Milan whether or not you want to run mental gymnastics in your head thAts up to you. Fake a$s fan

      2. I’m more of a Bologna fan.

        LOL.

Actually with so many former Milan players playing for teams above them in the table I’d be spoilt for choice.

In all serious people who have stood by and supported the bastards destroying the club are very much part of the problem.

        1. Atalanta, I would think. CDK (who by the way has once again faded hard), Maldini, Brescianini, Bellanova. All ex-Milan players there.

          1. He has zero logic as usual. He might as well support Inter… they have a couple of our past players too. Took him 30 years to figure out he travels near Como so he should support them instead 🥴. Complains about Milan not having Italians or owned by one yet Como doesn’t have an Italian owner either and field the same amount of Italians that we do which is practically nothing. They also don’t have an Italian coach. But the blowhard here complaining each week yet supports the same but for a different club. Can’t make that ish up

          2. IKWYDLS, and the best part is that he’s criticizing the fans for how they’re acting. Thank God he’s the perfect fan, right? 😀

  5. It’s like our players hate each other. Whenever there’s an inviting opportunity for a pass, the player chooses to dribble. We waste so many chances in the final third, it’s ridiculous. Look at their goal – that’s how you train and perfect attacking movements. They are a team and we’re not. Let’s hope for a miracle in the Coppa Italia and another miracle – to welcome new owners as soon as possible. The Serie A season ended during the water break “incident” in friggin’ August. I knew right then and there the atmosphere’s toxic. You may blame Conceicao all you want, but he only failed to salvage an ALREADY dreadful situation, born from the pure incompetence of those above him.

      1. Yeh Conseicao and the players.. Gasperini makes three subs and changes the game / Sergio waits another hour and the subs dont change sh*t…

      2. The moment we went 0-1 down, he should have pulled Pulisic, Leao, one Reijnders or Fofana, and Theo. These are our best players and most used. A draw here was going to do 0 for an already almost impossible European qualification in the league, and all eggs should from that moment on have gone to the Coppa Italia basket. We need to beat Inter, and then Bologna and the we can at least play EL next season and win another title this season. Even if we win out, that max 66pts. Bologna needs just two wins to reach that and lock us out of the EL via the league. The Serie A season is closed.

And if we get knocked out of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, I think youngsters on the bench like Torriani, Bartesaghi and Terraciano should see a lot more time until the end of the league season, plus Bondo so he can be evaluated, plus Gimenez so that he can continue to adjust to Serie A. Players that have no future with us, like Tammy, Felix and Sottil should not see another minute except for injuries to others.

    1. I hope they all leave, I wanted Ibra to stay it’s our players the first half goals conceded and 1000 comebacks have relegated us to a mid table team

  6. Strange game.
I still think this formation solves a lot of weaknesses in defence and midfield.
First half they tried to do a lot of quick vertical moves.
Final pass was often lacking but they still made decent chances.

Undone by one good move by Atalanta. Otherwise they seldom threatened.

Changes from Conceicao were too late.
    And why Jao Felix again???
Gimenez looked awful. Either he still wasn’t fit and/or woefully out of form.

    Pulisic didn’t have much impact.
Jovic did his job pretty well.
Leao was not making the final move necessary but looked good in the first half. He should have come off earlier.

  7. “Giga94

    5. We should wait for the next games to make conclusions about this new (?) system.”

Unfortunetly for us, Atalanta ain’t Udinese and winning against the 10th doesn’t mean we’re gonna win against the 3rd the same way, so the jury is still out about this 3-4-3.
Although we might say that if it wasn’t for 3 defenders, we might have conceded more tonight and aside from the goal action (Where again Théo did a poor job) the 3 center backs weren’t really terrible.
Reijnders is a hard working boy who does seem to want to improve so I’ll advice him to take a page from Éderson’s book. Midfield isn’t just about dribbling forward and scoring goals and Atalanta’s midfielders had no trouble going through ours.
Leão proved once again that he struggles when faced with a fast defender and tonight Pulišić was nowhere to be seen while Jović only had one good shot.
The subs came a bit too late IMO and didn’t make any difference.

    1. I don’t think the formation was an issue tonight.
343 still looks to be the best solution I think.
Unless you are going to make radical changes to the line-up and drop Theo and/or Leao.
Pulisic seems to me the only player in the squad not advantaged by this formation.

It was a lack of sharpness in attack that cost us.
Atalanta only had a couple of good moves coming forward but that was enough.
They caught us out in chaos after their 3 substitutions.

Conceicao was too late with his changes.

      1. I’m not saying the 3-4-3 is not good for us, but people were so hyped when we beat Udinese and all of a sudden they thought that just using a 3-4-3 will solve all of our issues. Our problems can’t be fixed just by an extra defender and one less midfielder.
Pulišić’s case is weird, Chelsea did use a 3-4-3 in 2020/21 when they won the UCL and he was crucial in some parts (scored and assisted against Real Madrid)

  8. Hey SempreMilan. Can we stop with the Reijnders is the best midfielder in the world articles??? I think you posted 3 of them this week. He can not or will not distribute the ball. IF YOU ARE PLAYING AS A COUNTER ATTACKING TEAM YOU HAVE TO PASS THE BALL FORWARD NOT DRIBBLE IT FROM MIDFIELD INTO THE BOX!! This was the worst game I saw him play. The 3 attacking players get low ratings today because Reijnders kept dribbling the ball into dispossessions.
Although Fofana had a few line splitting passes. I still think the inability to play the ball forward by our defense and midfielders is so below average
…. And today it was the difference.

  9. So, ACM changed formations. BFD. Besides allowing Theo to charge forward and Leao to receive long balls, someone tell me the strategy. You can’t because there wasn’t one.

  10. 3-4-3 works better than anything Milan have tried to do all season. Sit back compact and counter. Milan lacked the quality in the final third today, especially with the final pass missing. Even from the likes of Reijnders who was uncharacteristically off his game today.

Looked solid in the first half – Atalanta barely had a shot. But then in the second half started getting more aggressive and pushed more, which inevitably Atalanta took advantage off and hit us on a counter in transition and we concede just like the good old days. That was the mistake. If we kept the same game plan, I think sooner or later we would have connected on a counter.

I though a draw would have been fair. But that’s the story of the season. It’s a poorly constructed team with many pieces that don’t fit well, needing upgrades across the field, including in coaching and SD/TD roles.

But Milan won’t have any successful project even with a different cast as long as there are two funds fighting for power at the club.

    1. Yes, but now we’re seeing offensive issues. This 3-4-3 is no different than Pioli’s 5-3-2. When the latter tried that formation for a month we stopped scoring. The biggest issue, like you said, is the poor construction of the team. I does not matter what formation you use, if the team is poorly constructed, it’s not going to work.

  11. The formation is oke bro with no inferior again but Atalanta its the difference. They are compact team and the 2nd team in the table. lets be honest…

  12. We found the formation, then decided to play Route 1 football.

So formation seems to make sense. Tactics and subs not so much.

I continue to look for the ways we can take a step forward while then taking two back.

  13. Everyone complaining again when we lose, I think the formation is fine, we go toe to toe with Atalanta, its just we got caught off guard at one moment which is normal against quality opponent. Its not like we got dominated or something

    1. So for you it is good thing that the mighty Milan went Toe to Toe with Atlanta and still lost the match?

The mighty have fallen hard honestly.

Too bad for all the mediocrity created by Gery and Co.

They took over Milan as Italian champions and in 3 seasons made the team this bad.

      1. Currently Atalanta is 3rd, we are 9th. This season and previous season we are not as good as Atalanta, even if they dont have the same historical prestige, you shouldnt undermine them. They are not mediocre side that contantly thrash around against big team. If we lose against Torino or Genoa then I would be annoyed

  14. What formation we played when the changes wereade became unknown, different players running about like rabbits. Jovic should be played as a 10 cos of his work rate, even as a striker, he works so hard in midfield and defence, he was visibly helping out at the back than leao or reinders. If Theo is being blamed for the goal, where was pavlovic or Gabbie? Pulisic held on to the ball too much in counter, Jimenez was outplayed by old zappacosta and gimenez couldnt even run to connect to the passes played to him. The formation was compact only the players didn’t manage their roles well

  15. I expected this game to be like this. Draw or lose. The team is waiting for the game against Inter. I guess they believe that wining Coppa Italia will save the season. Let’s wait and judge them against Inter. My fear is which formation are we gonna use ? I would suggest we stick to formation we have been using against Inter. Its risky this time to use formation we have not really tested.

    1. No, just play jovic alongside leao or pulisic with Abraham upfront. If Abraham is coming from the bench to replace the tired one between pulisic and Leao.
No jovic out, Abraham in; let them play together.
I expected to see Abraham alongside jovic after conceding plus Leao & pulisic came off the pitch.
Playing an unfit gimenez and an unconvincing Felix is unacceptable.
Someone is blackmailing the coach to play Felix and he only threw in Gimenez to make it seem less awkward. Mr Sergio, must Felix play?
Gimenez is injured & has flopped (try again next season) and Felix is an irredeemable flop.

  16. You get what you paid for. From top to bottom – management, coaching stuff and players. All orchestrated by one and only Gerry.

Coming out in interviews saying you want to win, you want to improve and there are no excuses anymore. It’s the end of April, nothing has been done and everyone is groping in the dark desperately searching for something that will give new spirit and sporting competence, a meaning to this environment . These people have no clue on how to run a football club. Combine that with personal interest and internal war for power and this is what you get. And it took them only 2 seasons to mess it up.

  17. It seems to me the 343 is ourt best formation and was certainly the reason we did not get thrashed in this game.
    1st half – pretty even
Start of the 2nd half Milan dominated
Gasperini made 3 subs and they scored and took control.
This is what I expected to happen as they are a settled team, fighting for top 4 and have confidence. We are the opposite

Conceicao subs were, late, chaotic and unhelpful.

Conclusion: Gasperini out coached his counterpart

While we did have momentum our forwards created absolutely ZERO.
Leao seems to have lost all confidence and now just falls to the ground instead of trying to take a chance on.
Pulisic has for months been a shadow of the player before christmas, sure he has gotten assists here and there but like yesterday, he is mostly anonymous.

New coach needed – De Zerbi I hope
    New SD needed – D’amico I hope
Please buy Ederson and Bellanova (never gonna happen)
If we can sell most of our deadwood, perhaps we can bring in a good young winger who can play both sides to challenge Leao/Pulisic.
Oh and we still need a striker
I saw Gimenez pull out of a 50/50 last night, that was very disappointing to see
