AC Milan failed to clinch three points in their Serie A opener, in fact they didn’t even clinch one, as Cremonese won. Below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI
Maignan (6): He made a good stop on Bonazzoli in the first half, but was left for dead on the goals. Those were the only three shots on target as well, so the rating makes sense if you ask me.
Tomori (6): He seemed more interested in waving his arms around than actually playing at times, complaining about his teammates’ movement. Having said that, he defended well so it would have been harsh not to give him a pass here.
Gabbia (5.5): You could definitely make the argument that it was solid most of the time, with some good interceptions and clearances to note. However, there were also some questionable moments and I don’t think he commands the penalty box well enough. Milan need a leader at the back, clearly.
Pavlovic (6): Considering that he scored the goal, you might be a bit surprised by the average rating. However, it’s simply because he made a very big mistake in the first half that could have proved costly, while he was a bit sloppy on the ball overall. Questions can also be asked on the first goal, even if he was marking another player.
Saelemaekers (6.5): Milan looked dire going forward in the first half, and for large parts of the second too, but the Belgian was one of few glimpses in attack. It was great work on the goal as well, and his work-rate helped him a lot when moving up and down the flank.
Loftus-Cheek (5): He was incredibly quiet in the first half, with little to no movement in the build-up phase. Sure, he made his way into the box every now and then, but the end product just wasn’t there. Frankly, I’m struggling to see what purpose he fills in this team.
Modric (7 – MOTM): It wasn’t the debut he had hoped for result-wise, but his actual performance was very good. From his passing to the distance covered, it was all very impressive from him tonight, and Milan relied on him a lot. He came somewhat close to a goal as well with a thumping effort on the edge of the box.
Fofana (4.5): He consistently finds good positions to occupy, but the end product is far too poor for a player with his position. Once again, we got to see some very poor shots (only one or two decent ones) and that is just unacceptable. Then, he lazily left Bonazzoli unmarked in the box on Cremonese’s second goal, which his teammates were quick to point out.
Estupinan (6): It was a pretty poor display in possession for most of that first half, truth be told, and he struggled a bit in the duels with Zerbin. It was a nice cross to assist the goal, though, and that saves his rating here.
Gimenez (5.5): We can’t fault him for his work-rate, as he fought tirelessly with Baschirotto, and he also had a couple of decent shots. Still, not enough was done in 90 minutes and he also missed a big chance towards the end.
Pulisic (5.5): I’m ready to get the hate for this, but when you consider that he saw a lot of the ball and often in decent positions too, there just wasn’t enough coming from him tonight. Saelemaekers switched over to the left once and helped create the goal. A few decent corners, but in open play he really struggled against Cremonese’s low defence.
Substitutes
Jimenez (5.5): We got to see him use his pace in the trademark fashion a few times but the rating is heavily affected by a very unnecessary yellow card, screaming in the referee’s face.
Chukwueze (6): Some good moments from him, in the usual way he creates chances, and it did open up space for his teammates.
Jashari (5.5): He added some energy to the game and certainly tried to make things happen, but he was too rash in the duels, which allowed Cremonese to win free-kicks and slow down the game.

We lacked a proper target player up front tonight.
Kinda, our only striker was being man marked and left alone with 3 CBs as pulisic was going deeper and wider as the game went on. It’s very hard to make something happen when marked like that. Towards the end when pavlo was going up their cbs started to struggle a bit with him and gimenez.
Exactly what I think too, having only one striker and beeing able to play 2 target players today was the only bad part about the game.
Maybe alegri could have add loftus there, from me his misstake a little bit too, playing the 433 whole game and leaving the santi sufer, it wasnt his fault.
On the other hand, I like the characteristics of pavlovic joining attack when we struggle, I think he is doing great job from cb to a second striker when we struggle. He did it many times, often causing lot of trouble to opponents
I dont think putting loftus cheek would have played well up top, but I understand the thought behind it. A 343 might be better for this team, especially with leao coming back in. If we do keep the 352 I think we should use a cam instead of a flat 3 in midfield leaving fofana as a holding and modric as a play maker or have a box to box in his place.

Wasnt great but did create more chances (4) than anyone on the field. If you watch closely you see him make runs into dangerous spaces that others either do not see at all or fail badly at getting him the ball. I’m sure he is frustrated

Saw this same game about 30 times last season.
Outside of Modric and Saelemaekers the rest of the players were doo doo.
Gabbia and Pavlovic should never play together. Put Tomori or De Winter with one of them. 2 crosses in the penalty area and they gave up 2 goals.
Fofana and RLC were useless. Even though he might be the biggest dude on the pitch, outside of Baschirotto, RLC goes down easier than Brahim Diaz. Fofana should be banned from shooting.
If there is a possibility to get Rabiot, Milan should jump on it, or another midfielder.
Play Jimenez, or the new kid, at RB, stop with this Tomori experiment.

Wasn’t the defenders fault on the goals, their markers were fofana and loftus cheek which both left their markers hence they scored. Tomori wasn’t great going up either, pavlo had much more success then him and had to defend more with estupinan losing the ball so frequently. Tomori was used more like a fullback yet pavlo did much better.
The CB position was poor last season and still poor so far. As far as upfront, there’s no chemistry. You could tell. Max made midfield subs a bit late. Fofana and RLC should have come off at halftime.
Needed a lot more from Pulisic tonight.

I’ve said it a million times. Pulisic is no longer a player than can break teams down individually. He’s a great combiner, but there is no one else in this team, Leao included, who can play the little 1-2’s with enough precision to break a team down that’s playing a low block. Fofana tried a couple of times, but nothing ever comes after that initial combination. Gimenez is absolutely not the guy for this. Giroud was ok at it. Prime Giroud would’ve been great.
Leao needs space to run into. He would have been zero help today.
Well said @Shaggie96. The one two’s, the off the ball runs are what will break low blocks down. And that is our Achilles heel. If we can’t find an answer for low blocks we are doomed this season. The entire match we did not have a single break thru their defense, and you need to get behind the defense to win games. The off side goal by Giminez was the closest we came to that…Allegri has a job on his hands.
Very disappointing game. FOFANA AND CHEEK MUST NOT START EVER AGAIN. Both are awful. 0 impact, 0 vision of the game. Just muscle running around the field. Modric in the 1st half covered more ground than these two clueless players. By the way, modric was the only one from our 3 center midfilders that can actually pass the ball. 2nd goal was all fofana cought ball watching. Pablo looked a bit confused with a 3 men defense. At the same time estipioan didn’t help much in defense. Estipioan made many mistakes but has some characteristics that if worked on can become decent. The positives were the movement off the ball, especially low block teams. Just again when you have two deadwood players in the middle (fofana and cheek) the finally pass and finish is not there. Jimenez is that kind of player that works best with teams that create a lot and many through balls. He is not gonna hold up the play. Just not physical enough. Another forward needed. Hope Max drops those 2 dead sticks in the middle and plays the new additions. If not, we can easily write off the season on day 1. To say that they should score 30 goals between them is lunatic. As if allegri never watched them play.

Terrible display, only Salamakers and Modric were doing something. Strangely Alegri took Modric out and put Salamakers back limiting his attacking play just as when we needed more power in attack. Somehow both Loftus and Fofana stayed on the field, while both of them combined have zero creativity. Also despite good play in attack Modric doesn’t offer any defensive coverage not sure why he was not played a bit more advanced and Fofana or Ricci in the defensive position. Fofana does nothing forward 90% of the time anyway. Gimenez was sharp in the box but lost every physical duel with Cremonese CBs. This is all mainly Alegri fault, poor starting choises with Loftus/Fofana, poor subs, late subs etc.
Saelemaekers is the best player I’ve ever seen at making people think he’s doing something when in reality, he’s doing next to nothing other than run around a lot. His dribbles, passes, shots, everything are always just enough off that nothing ever comes of his actions.

I agree with almost everything. Modric needed to go because he’s 40yo who came last on the preseason and had the highest mileage at the time of substitution. Otherwise, pure class from him. Puli will struggle in this formation – the moment he started to work behind Gimenez he switched to turbo mode. Salad was one man show covering both wings, right midfield, right back… Classic example of attitude and hard work is often more than talent. Most successful opportunities came from vertical passes through the center – not sure why we didn’t exploit more in that direction. Defense has the same issues for a third year in a row – I’d prefer a top experienced CB vs top forward to be honest. Only time will tell, but if we continue to have those defensive issues under Allegri, then it’s obviously lack of quality.
The reason he put Saele back is because Estupinan was poor so Jimenez had to come in on the left and Chuky on the right.

The build up is too slow, the pressing is too uncoordinated and timid, only Fofana presses with intensity. RCL was totally a ghost, I’ll keep on saying it we don’t need him not as a starter, Modric is vintage player he shouldn’t be starting with RCL playing also.

Before I even get into the game there are many things to address.
Ricci who has started every game at preseason and has played fantastic, how does he not start tonight?
Why is 3 5 2 the formation of choice? First of all, we don’t have the players to play a 3 5 2 where our forwards are mostly wingers and we have nobody to replace them at the moment since leao is injured and we don’t have any real striker except gimenez.
Now let’s get into the game. I understand starting fofana and loftus but what I don’t understand is how they played a full 90 minutes when they had no impact whatsoever and modric who was actually playing great gets subbed off. How does Ricci not see the field? Ricci sits in between the defence and organized the back three so they can move up and that’s where we were hurt the most yet again.
Up front we only have pulisic who’s a winger and gimenez. Absolutely no other striker so why are we playing with two up front? Pulisic was disappointing but my God gimenez first touch and hold up play was awful. He couldn’t even dribble. We so desperately need Boniface and probably another striker too.
Same old milan of last season with same problems. Dominate and two goals where the organization of defence is off you get punished and then go into panic mode.
Allegri, I actually blame this loss totally on him. This wasn’t the formation to go with against cremonese, the subs were all very too late and I did not agree with Ricci not starting this game. It was mind blowing that fofana and loftus were not subbed off. Jimenez didn’t get a sniff of game time all preseason and gets to play today as well as chukwueze.
I fully expect this to be a one off of a mistake and to never happen again cause all this optimism I had going into this season that was a kick to the gut.

As clearly seen this team is nothing without Leao and that’s simply not good enough. And even when our main protagonist is missing, the game could’ve been managed much better.
Change formation, start with Modrich,Jashari and Ricci in the midfield before it’s late.

Dealing with Allegri’s miserable face on the sidelines is one thing, but enduring the team’s leaky defense, Santi Giménez’s blunders up front, and the midfield’s mistakes is another. Worst of all was putting up with the gutlessness of the coach. Disappointing result but not the end of the world. I highly doubt this will be our starting eleven or formation moving forward. A lot of the new signings have come in late and are not match fit. It will take a month or two for everybody to settle in and for Allegri to find his preferred system.
There is one thing I want to highlight that I have been saying for the past two seasons. I think there is a problem with favoritism in this team. The grace period that Furlani players like Loftus-Cheek, Chukwueze, Musah, Pavlovic…etc. have been given by coaches and the media compared to Bennacer, Krunic, Thiaw, Saelemaekers is criminal to me. The latter group, who actually delivered for us, got crucified after every bad performance. Am I alone in this?
Sure you are not alone. Our bigest problem today is that nobady from the managment was found accountable for what is hapenning the past years. Pavlovic for Kalulu :), tonali for a bunch of useless clowns we are stucked with because offloading will make a capital loss.

I’m starting to suspect RLC doesn’t even like football, let alone be good at it. Completely useless, I knew his relatively good pre-season display wasn’t an indication of anything, much like Chuck’s summer under Foseca.
Fofana was so lazy in both goals. People blame Gabbia and Pavlovic, but pay closer attention to his passiveness. His shooting hasn’t improved either.
When both your box-to-box midfielders are awful against a low block team that is dangerous on the counter, there’s little you can do transition-wise. Modric tried his best, sometimes helped by an energetic Saelemakers, but that’s about it. Pulisic seems confused in the 3-5-2 whereas Santi only proved his critics right. He is a great poacher when the opportunity arrives, but he is way too slow without the ball.
There’s an apparent mentality problem that has to do with the overall atmosphere at the club under The Infamous. The stadium is like a graveyard, what’s the point in having 75 thousand? Didn’t even feel like a home game. Cardinale will count the money from tickets and that’s it. Even with these players in this sub-optimal condition we should’ve beaten Cremonese, but everything is rotten and I feel sorry for Allegri, much like I did for Sergio. Both are good coaches who end up swallowed by the toxicity within the club.
Milan traditionally struggles against the low block and there were no patterns from Max to suggest he has a plan for it. It was all too predictable void of any chemistry up front.

The confusion for Pulisic came from Pervis who could not do anything. Once Jimenez entered the match him and Pulisic had several drives to goal but to bad no Reijnders to finish the chances.

Pulisic needs to go back on the right where he has been a killer for us. We need a new CB and CF. I don’t disagree with his rating but there are a lot of people you gave a pass that should be joining him at 5.5 or worse.
It doesn’t matter which side Pulisic plays on. What matters is who is on the field with him. He will always be ineffective with the group that was out there today because there is no one that accentuates his strengths or takes advantage of them. I expect Modric will find him for a few goals before the season’s over, but that’s it.
There’s no one who plays well in tight spaces on this team so when a team blocks low we struggle.
Fofana needs to go. I can’t stand him. His shooting is the worst. He makes me so angry when he shoots all the time. Poor crowd needs helmets for our games. Someone will die this season when they are eating a hotdog getting shot and choking to death.

I have said many times we NEED to chase another CB that can play out of the back (since we sold the only one who could – Thiaw). Estphian can’t defend (shocker lol) and Salad isn’t really a defender either and Gabbia/Tomori/Pavlovic/De Winter – are hardly world class let alone serviceable.
Gimenez looks lost. Sign Boniface for a small fee (5M) and hope he’s healthy AND sign Vlahovic (no better option because we waited yet again).
Allegri will get us organized and in better sync BUT for all of those (including the authors on this site) who thought we could win the Scudetto after changing 10-11 players – LOLOLOLOLOLOLO. Championship teams need time to gel and that won’t happen in one season and esp won’t happen with that back 3-4 we currently have

No need to jump to conclusions after just the first game. Selling Theo was a great decision and we shouldn’t apologize for that.
The main problems I see with allegri is the same problems I’ve seen with the previous coaches we’ve had except Fonseca. Making Leao the focal point of our attack and team is always a problem and when I watched our preseason games, I came to the conclusion that allegri might not be the right man.
Secondly, when I watched our preseason games against arsenal and Liverpool and saw the tactics he deployed where we were sitting back and only playing for the counters, I quickly understood he’s gonna play with the small mentality.
Watching Chelsea give PSG a beating at the club World Cup after everybody wrote them off, showed they’re a team with big mentality and a coach with big mentality. If we continue with the mentality of sitting back against big teams, then we should forget about contending for scudetto or champs league. We got a long way to go.
Also, selling Chuk will be a big mistake. Obviously one of the most dangerous players we have on the team. He needs trust.

In the past berrardi was a nightmare for ACM , and now baschirotto. ACM should buy bsschirotto. 352 seems confused many player , because they often use 433 in the past. In my opinion, Giminez was closer to a 3.5 or 4. He got bullied the whole game by Baschirotto. His first touch was terrible. At least it was a decent shot on the offside goal. It wasn’t great but Milan did dominate most of the game. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.
Allegri is not a full, and he knows very very well how good were Fonfana and RLC playing. Actually he did take off Modric just to put the emphasizes. So yes, you can give them maybe 2 for the distance covered, but 4.5 and 5, common, I dont think they can get much worse.

We have 3.5 players with Milan quality in the starter. One if them is 40. The other is the keeper. 0.75 is spread between Gimenez and Alexis. Expecting more than last season is naive. For anything to happen we need a management and ownership that knows how to win, and to think for the long term. Red Bird has zero record of doing so. There will be no success with a leadership that has no idea how to build a winning organisation.

Goal was a miscommunication in the backline but if there was one in particular to point a finger at, it’s probably Pav. He redeemed himself with the goal obviously but his defending is a mixed bag. His left foot is only good for defending and passing out to the left but he’s super uncomfortable passing with his right foot into the midfield to help out attacking build up.
Said this a year or so ago, i personally don’t like 3 backs systems because it’s a difficult setup to master and unintuitively suffers from crosses. Not because we have centre backs mean they can play in a back 3. Some defenders simply can’t handle the dynamics. We had 3 of the best ever and they couldn’t do it but we expect these guys to, all of a sudden?
Tomori and RLC just aren’t compatible on the field. And I feel it’s more RLC is the issue. I understand Tomori’s frustration,.Cheeks wasn’t putting himself into spots where Tomori is comfortable passing the ball.
Cremonese we had a clear plan to target Estupinan but he also looked lost on his own doing too. Probably why he was hooked at the half even if he did provide the assist.. however we Must give him time to get accustomed to the league. Can’t stress this enough.
We can’t be thinking of letting Saladman go. He’s everywhere. Can defend, can press and has ability on the ball enough to create problems in attack.
Fofana reverted to his former self in terms of shot accuracy which was what I feared.
All in all its the first game, so iron out the creases and hopefully improve. We’ll certainly do better than 8th so not to worry there.
Finally, while I’d like to just focus on us i can’t help but say that the ref was atrocious and affected the outcome of the game. How is the blatant foul on Fofana not a pen?? Our players were getting tossed around like a 304 and no cards were shown until very late. I didn’t realize you have to stop play for a player cramping up but here we are. Ref was not at the level required..

Yea no worries. Long story short we tried to accommodate Nesta, Maldini and Stam/Kaladze in a back three but it didn’t work out in the long run. And those were extremely intelligent defenders, best of the best. To expect that from our current crop…I dunno😐.
My memory is also sho.d as I’m getting older. This was around 2005, after the Istanbul final. Earlier in the season there signs and murmurings that Nesta and Stam weren’t compatible on the field/lack of chemistry. Don’t get me wrong they defended very well but most ppl can see Nesta and Maldini were better as a unit and had better Chem and reading of the game with each other. Then the summer after the Pool defeat we tries out the back 3, including with Kaladze (at the time he was being courted by Chelsea and we didn’t want to lose him though he vocally said he didn’t enjoy the amount of playing time he was getting). Kaladze at time was no slouch either. And there was pressure even up to Berlusconi to play the back 3, yikes.
We could have put Stam at right back but that would mean Cafu sits, which isn’t ideal to put it lightly 😅 (although Stam did at times play there that season). And since Maldini-Nesta were the better pairing it made for a huge headache. How do you satisfy 3 high level CBs who would demand being starters. Cue trying out 3 at the back, but was later abandoned as any 3 combo just didn’t look comfortable (I recalled in particular a UCL game where they just didn’t look it, even the commentator mentioned it). Eventually we just went back to back four, most of the times (though we did use 3 sometimes as an option). The year after, Stam left we just went straight Christmas tree, back four.
Also, unrelated to the memory jog, but related in a way, for me I find center backs either have it in them to play in a three or they don’t. Some are just more comfortable. I find also Bonucci, Barz, Chiellini of Juve to be the best ever back 3 I’ve seen. The issue tends to be who picks up who. With a 2, you know for sure the space your partner picks up as it’s only one person to track. With three sometimes one tends to presume the other picks up that space and when they don’t it creates problems. But that’s just a personal preference. Back 3s can take a while to gel so to expect it so soon from our guys may be a bit much…I dunno 🤷♂️

How many times we have to watch Santiago score and be offsides. He does not know how to read defenses. He is also too slow. Pav is too sliw out of the back. He always has to look up and then picks out his pass. He needs to be aware of his options quicker. As a result we are slow out of the back. In todays game we continually hit the oponent players with our passes. This goes back to focus and training. We need a lot of work is the bottom line.
Estupinian 6?…. and Gabbia 5.5?… ok. Should be a 4 for Estupido and 6.5 for Gabbia the only one who played well at the back today

Theo was the worst performing player in a team that finished 8th, pretty sure getting rid of his lazy behind was among the few rational things that have happened to us recently. His career move (going to Saudi Arabia) just proved what we all suspected – he no longer has football ambition and only cares about the money and the night life.
Il say it again Milan has to go all out for a leading defender mature like Kjaer, Tomori gabbia and pav all need to be led non of them are leaders. The problem of we Milan fans is that we ate never patient for once. Granted, a home loss to a team like this can be humiliating. But you guys should not forget that the team chemistry has been changed both physically and mentally with the influx of new comers. Bullying and jeering the players will not help matters because it put our players on panic mode leaving the players to play for themselves rather than the team as a whole.
Another issue is that we keep on buying the same crop of players who are not fit for our style of play or who are not fit for what Milan represents. Imagine us already thinking of selling Giminez, a
striker we bought just last season ! .For us to go back to the top again will need patience, proper definition of objectives and managing and acquiring resources to achieve that aim.
Bullying and jeering players? We literally didn’t hear our fans bar a few minutes at the start of the second half when protesting Curva Sud briefly tried to encourage the players. Pretty sure a lot of people on the stands were tourists who didn’t even know who was playing. It’s what RedBird love to see more than anything, hence the ultras limitations.
Milan will concede silly goals with Pavlovic, Tomori and Gabbia as our central defenders. They are all error prone with limited quality on the ball.
Paavlovic gave the opponent their first with poor pass and also gave the corner that resulted to the goal poor clearance. Then he and the other defenders can’t defend simple crosses too bad.

It was the first game of season, and Allegri have yet to implement his tactics. Not that I expect entertaining football, but I saw grinta, will and determination. We will soon grind teams like Cremonse.
I also saw a midfield that didn’t work, but I doubt Ricci and Jashari were bought for the bench. Ricci and Jashari paired with Modric and/or Fofana/RLC will be another story.
Cremonese had the luck we lacked, so is football. In 10 matches, how many would Cremonse win?
Sala is great, I totally understand why Roma and Juventus are after him, and Allegri wants to keep him.
Gimenez did a great job today. Alone against three Italian defenders, wtf did you guys expect? He ran, worked and scored a great goal, no doubt about the offside though. Shooting a volley coming from behind is super difficult. Imagine him with a true partner up front in a two man attack?
Our defence was weak, clearly. Pavlovic is the kind of fighter we have been missing for years, if only he could use the inside of his head. With an intelligent defender by his side (which we don’t have at present) pur defence will be good. If you think Thiaw was the answer, you asked the wrong question. Tomori and Gabbia are ok, but we need a captain, a true intelligent defender (Kim from Bayern?)

I was expecting that Allegri, as an experienced manager, will see this as the game progresses. But I was wrong

This one is on Allegri and the system he choose. Ditch 352, we don’t have players for it especially up front. Saying you expect combined 15 goals from Fofana and RLC will get you exactly this – two wasteful mids haggling the ball and shooting all over the place while leaving our backline exposed.
Both Pavlović and Tomori did worse than Gabbia, yet the Italian faces biggest criticism. He was quiet and did what he had to do. So it has to do something about him being Italian.
It’s only the first game, nothing is lost but Allegri needs to find solution asap. Or we’re going down the same path as previous season under Fonzy.

Did you even watch the game and goals? He is the only player that sees the run of the player and is late. Yes, there is a mistake by RLC as well and he is to blame before that, but Pavlovic is a below average defender. A good defender would solve this easy.
Spend all that money to only start RLC, Fofana, Tomori and Pavlovic. Make it make sense.

It was such a weird game. Our boys played too compactly. Sometimes, 3-4 players would just stay covering one spot (usually the right flank).

Also, our attackers were almost always disconnected from the midfielders and defenders. Only Modric’s long passes gave some hope.
