Player Ratings: AC Milan 0-2 Inter – shocking defending; Tonali fights

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan failed to clinch a good result for the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Inter, who prevailed 2-0. Several of the Rossoneri players struggled and down below are the ratings.

Starting XI

Maignan (6): He couldn’t do much about the goals and he was solid overall. He saved Milan in the second half with a great save on Dzeko.

Calabria (4): Incredibly poor from the captain. Often way out of position, misjudging the play and losing his battles on the right flank. He failed to shut down Dzeko on the first goal and was out of position on the second.

Kjaer (4.5): Not his finest game, that’s for sure. He had one major mistake which Lautaro really should have capitalised on. The Dane just didn’t look secure at all.

Tomori (4.5): Just like his colleague, he didn’t do enough. The defence was leaking and he was one of the key reasons. His position can be discussed on the second goal and other were a couple of other examples of bad positioning.

Hernandez (4.5): He was really bad defensively today and he didn’t add much going forward either. He barely went forward, which we must assume was because of the tactics (which were also poor).

Krunic (5): He wasn’t the balance-maker today, or at least he didn’t do as well as he could have. It’s clear that something went horribly wrong in Pioli’s tactical approach because there was a big hole in midfield, which the players can’t take all the blame for.

Tonali (6 – MOTM): On the second goal, he could have done more but then he improved and was the best Milan player on the pitch. Hit the post with a thumping effort and was the player that created chances.

Diaz (5): A couple of good dribblings and moves here and there, but too much complaining for him today. He was clearly beaten physically by the Inter defence.

Bennacer (N/A): It’s a shame he had to come off so early. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.

Saelemaekers (6): The decision to take him off was a bit strange seeing as he was one of the few that actually tried in attack. He’s no Leao, but honestly wasn’t bad either.

Giroud (5): He improved in the second half, but lost way too many duels in the first half and that really hurt Milan.

Substitutes

Messias (4.5): He had a huge chance to make it 1-2 early in the second half but sent it wide. That could have been a game-changer for the Rossoneri. In those moments, you must score.

Thiaw (6): He did what was needed, not much more.

Origi (6): He created two good chances immediately and was a breath of fresh air for Milan. Unfortunately, the Rossoneri almost only played on the right afterwards.

Pobega (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Kalulu (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. we got very lucky to be 2-0 down, could have been 4-0 and a red for the punch on Bastoni, Leao will have to go crazy for us to progress

    1. What was that madness from Krunic?! I thought it would be a penalty and red card for sure. So disappointed with him because despite all his good performances recently he showed he’s not a professional and serious enough player. You simply can’t lose your mind like that in such match. Still don’t know how VAR didn’t intervene.

      1. I saw it on bt sport with english commentary and I just loved when they said ” I’ts just a small hit to the ribs from Krunic nothing there, good call by the ref..”

    2. I totally agree with u and pls u guys should not expect any miracle on d second leg, pioli is useless coach

  2. As a team, we left too many spaces. We didn’t learn on how to deal with Inter after the last 2 defeats. Our approach (and even the line up) was similar with the match against Napoli. While Napoli and Inter are never alike. We let their midfielders ran our game. Of course, as the result for the individual term, it’s been bad overall as shown here.

And putting a one dimensional player like Messias is a further gift to Inter defence.

  3. Where those people that abuse me just because Pioli won Lazio match. I said then and I will repeat it that Pioli doesn’t yet have idea how to beat a defensive team which Inter is one of them and Pioli should leave. Playing side passes that give you possession but no penetration is not good football.
Against Spezia, Pioli will rotate and Milan will need up with draw or worst.
It is time Milan forget this semi and focus on top4

    1. Pioli has won the title and got us to the semi-finals and we’re probably about 5 years ahead of where we thought we’d be when he took over, so I’m more than happy to abuse you for being such an idiot.

Once again, if you don’t support the actual manager or the actual players who are the team, then you don’t support the support the team, you support a brand name.

      1. Loud it so he or she will hear. I think it’s a she because a man with balls won’t say this. Appreciate Pioli he has tried, milan’s target in this competition was round of 16.

  4. Absolutely shocking performance by the team. It was a walk in the park for Inter. We desperately need some quality players who can make a difference! If we miss out on the top four, we will be in serious decline. Pioli has nothing left to give, that donkey Cardinale has no clue how to run this club and is a low budget fool, majority of the players are not up to the required standard. It’s been very clear all season!

    1. Spot on mate. Shocking performance and a lot of players who have no business being in a CL semi final

Hard to know what to say

We had a good team last summer and we got weeker.
Investment needed, this is a very poor squad

      1. when we consider the gap in level of our players in depths positions, and our 1st 11, it is obvious we had no business letting any starters leave after winning knowing our rivals would stay level or get better. this is all on ownership and the suits in the stands. Not Massara or Maldini either. I am sure they would have coughed up the couple more millions needed to keep our team from last year and the one before together. It is American idiots who cared more about a club sale and stupid policies that have no justification that are at fault. Anyone saying otherwise are clueless morons that know nothing about the sport, psychology and team management . When you let your best players leave for nothing, the message you send to the players who stay is their efforts are not appreciated and minimum investments needed to be close to competitive will not be made to make their work count.

      1. Agreed. Tomori and Kjaer parted the red sea. I’m not sure who instructed Tomori to track a runner beyond his CB partner like that. Basic defending 101…..

  5. All in all a good result.
Why is our shortest defender marking inter tallest forward or maybe tallest player.
How many goals have we conceited this season from opposing midfielders running behind our midfielders. It wasn’t happening the last few years because Kessie took care of it.
I know people will go after Pioli and certain players, but the reason for this loss is the big difference in player quality between the 2 teams .
    Look at our starting lineup.
Krunic, Bennacer, Saelemakers, Brahim were all back ups last few years, Tonali has the highest ceiling of our mids, and Giroud is 36 years old. People turned blind eye on Calabria in the Napoli games, praise him for “shutting down” Kvara even though kvara was triple teamed for most of the games.
And Kjaer and Tomori alsmot had Kalulu- Thiaw situation but Lautaro saved them by flopping.
All 3 of inter starting midfielders plus Brozovic are better than any of our midfielders. Their midfielders can do it all , run, defend, attack, pass, create, shoot. All our midfielders can do is run and roll on the ground. I said yesterday Tonali can be a starter but Krunic and Bennacer cannot be our starters if we wanna return to being a top club again.
Pioli is a limited coach but he has achieved the maximum and more with the players at his disposal.
Getting so far is a miracle.

    1. Shocking display from Calabria.

Inter could bring in Lukaku and Brozovic off the bench. Pioli doesn’t even have enough quality players to start matches. He has to start Diaz or Messias SMH

    2. “Why is our shortest defender marking inter tallest forward or maybe tallest player.”

I was about to ask the same. It’s absolutely idiotic to put the smallest guy to defend the biggest threat on set-pieces. You got what you asked for there.

    3. And yes… it’s so bloody obvious that Inter has way better roster than Milan. To be honest most Milan starters would be on the bench in Inter. And the midfield is lightyears ahead in any comparison. Any one of them can create something as in Milan… The midfield is all about passing backwards as they lack the vision and creativity.

Sad but true. But still… It’s not over. Miracles happen. After all Milan did win the scudetto last season with those players. Maybe Padre Pioli can pull one more miracle out of his ass… Or hat. I don’t care where as long as there will be a miracle.

  6. Not a spectacular performance, by any means! But, I have faith that we can turn this around.. If Barcelona can turn four, goal deficit, why can’t we?

      1. We don’t need to! I mean, just have faith.. There are many comeback stories in Football… Nobody thought that, Real Madrid would beat Manchester City last season!

        1. I admire your optimism. Unfortunately I can’t share those feelings. If it indeed does happen I’ll be crying in joy and acknowledge you but it’s the end of the road for us. If we don’t make top 4 pioli must go.

          1. Man you should focus ur criticism more on team depth. Pioli has tried with the players at his disposal.

You can’t compare inter midfield and attack with our own in any way.
Pioli has come so far, the target was round of 16 but here he is in round of 4.

  7. I don’t know what it is, but playing against inter we are cursed. They always get the better of us. Not because they’re playing better, we lose to ourselves. Krunic has been surprisingly good this year and he just had to give a krunic performance tonight. He was awful and he was lucky to not get a red. Milan were second to every single ball and the midfield was non existent and nobody wanted to make a damn tackle. We stood there scared letting inter dance and run into the box. They were sleeping on that second goal! The midfield were was non existent and we did play better in the second half only because inter held back and wanted to keep their lead. I CAN’T COMPREHEND WHY WE PLAY SO SCARED TO INTER IN THE FIRST HALF EVERY SINGLE TIME. With leao back the next game we can have our say but I think it’s the end of the road. I can’t believe how they played tonight because the performance wasn’t worthy of a champions league semi final

    1. While our chances are slim.. But I don’t think, it’s end of the road! If Spurs did it in 2019, why can’t we?

      1. Honestly, I don’t see it. I hope they prove me wrong but for some reason against inter they always get the better of us. We play at our lowest when its against them just like napoli did when we beat them this year. With leao I can see some sort of chance but without him we are doomed. I also don’t see us scoring 3 away goals. It’s so sad

          1. What faith listen inter only needed milan to remove Napoli for so that they remove Milan cos beating beating Napoli would be very difficult for inter inter will forever be beating is unless we throw away all these crab players and get class players and d crab players are Diaz, mesias origi, florenzi rebic cdk toure krunic etc

    2. Looking at the last 4-5 matches, Inter always looked for early goals with fast and direct pass to their last half. Take the lead early so than they can sit deeper and wait for the space, just like they did this match where all the 3 central midfielders positioned further back. And yes, we haven’t learned a single thing that’s why the approaches (and results) were all the same.

And also it’s helpful to have someone who can really take set pieces as we also conceeded several goals recently for their set pieces.

      1. Capello to Sky Sport: “Pioli can’t find countermeasures, it’s not the first derby played like this. The midfield never made a filter, Inter’s midfielders were always free and created twice as many problems”.

The fact that on the last league match against Inter we ‘only’ lost 1-0 was partly because we still played with that 3-5-2 formation where the mid can match them, at the very least in numbers.

Personally I was expecting this kind of approach today, as we know our attacking simply isn’t the same w/o Leao. And in 2nd leg we can field more attacking approach while hoping Leao will be there. Well, but that’s just a fantasy speaking.

  8. Look, the truth is we’ve been punching above our weight yet again like last season. I’m not saying we have bad players but being at this stage is already an achievement for this team. We have to remember this is a team that lost something in the transfer window instead of strengthening the squad.

In this match, that was Serie B level performances from Calabria, Diaz and Messias. Pure garbage, and you can’t play football with 5 or 6 players. The terrible ones make them also look bad. Then when you concede in the first minute on a corner with laughable defending, it’s already over.

We have 12, 13 players, and only 3 of them world class. That’s it. When 2 first choices are out we’re in trouble. Inter could bring in Lukaku and Brozovic, and we had to start with Diaz. That’s the difference.

Leao absence screwed this young squad mentally. They clearly lost their heads and confidence before the match even began. Thought they have no chance.

I hope at least for the second leg Diaz stays far away from the pitch. He’s the most useless player ever, and I count his once in a blue moon good goals and performances. Leao and Saelemaekers (who was good today) should play behind Giroud for that match, but it’s probably already too late. Leao isn’t much use when the other team sits back, and Inter will understandably do so.

    1. Not that we could’ve necessarily won this with better players though. It was an off day. They were beaten in their heads before the match had even begun. That Bastoni run undisturbed to set up Dzeko should tell us everything. That is amateur hour football.

The problem with Milan is you never know which version you get. On our day we look like world beaters, on off days we might make teams like Spezia look like prime Barca.

We were lucky not to lose with a heavier score line, even though we were unlucky with Tonali’s post, and a half decent player would’ve at least scored that Messias chance. Terrible.

  9. We always lose to Inter late run from midfield. Saelesmaeker was substituted because he lose physically against Dumfries

  10. Honestly nobody deserves a good rating here, not even the golden boy Tonali. Yes, he did some good things going forward, but he failed to track back and mark his man on the second goal like he often does and it was costly.
Calabria was an utter disaster. Both goals were on him, altho I don’t know why he is marking Inter’s tallest player on corners. Kalulu should be our starting RB.

      1. Nonsense. Go look at it again. Mykatarian starts his run 5 yards behind Tonali and runs right by him while Tonali is ball watching. Kjaer was in the center but he picked up the first man who cleverly dummied it and Tonali’s Mark was left wide open. He does it all the time. Our midfield was totally bossed today. Milan should pay Kessie whatever he wants to come back.

        1. Not at this point. Reheated soup is never a good idea, but I definitely endorse finding a physical defensive midfielder to screen the defense. Forget Diaz. Change formation to a 4-3-3, sign that defensive mid, have him play in between Tonali and Bennacer, sign a real RW and a young striker, and we will be in much better shape. ST, RW and CM. Those three players this summer.

  11. The problem with Milan is pioli. But the biggest is the entire board and management. Pioli still don’t know how to play his lads in their best positions. And also a quick tactical assessment of the game. Pobega should have came in for bennacer as inter players were so physical. Messias was just a buzz kill. He was afforded most of the ball but couldn’t even do anything. Krunic was playing today as if the opponent was his wife. This game reminded me of those at Chelsea

    1. Yes I thought bringing on Messias and moving Diaz to centre was a bad move.
Pobega is bigger, stronger and scores goals. If he is not a back up for Bennacer in this system then what is he?

  12. Pioli is disaster not players.

You can’t expect our young squad in beginning to play like Barcelona in Ronaldinho days.

Pioli use same tactics even he knows he don’t have quality squad. He needs to learn to adjust by opponents… and by player selections.

This can’t be fixed. Some players must get rest but many of them must play every single game to reach forth position until end.

  13. Let me start by saying the ref was awful today, I can’t believe the officiating i was seeing, with that being said the team today was a disaster, like how is it we play inter scared? Like we literally look scared constantly playing inter, I honestly don’t get it and it irritates, and finally we need some quality players injected in this team like yesterday, it was embarrassing watching inter bring subs and seeing what we have.

    1. True. The ref was worse than Milan’s performance. I would have expected a penalty for Milan in the first half on the corner where both Giroud and especially Saelemakers are pushed to the ground. Besides that the ref let a lot of foul’s by Inter pass. They started the match fierce and it payed off, but it’s not as if they can shut it down at the back. Even with limited creativity Milan could have easily scored twice (Tonali & Messias) so 2-2 was a much a possibility as 4-0. All is not lost because with the right approach we can definitely score against Inter in the return leg and then Inter will be in a very difficult position between defending the 1 goal break and attacking. That’s not what their tactics are build on so if we manage to make it 1-2 I think anything can happen.

  14. Well midfield again in the spotlight, also dumb mistakes. 2nd smallest guy covering the big guy dzeko= stupid. Midfield getting outmuscled, outran by opposition. Tonali sucks at tracking back. He fought a lot( don’t get me wrong) tried to create something. Maybe, big maybe pioli couldnt have done something about shinters aggressive midfield. No real am thats another weakness that we have and have been having. Thats why we struggle against defending teams. Most of our midfielders are good at some aspect but very bad at some others. We need to either fix those issues or aim for well rounded midfielders. Young cf also needed. At least this season, we won a great player for the future, thiaw. He will get better. This team surprised us in the past. Maybe it will again by overturning this 0-2 loss. Forzza milan.

  15. Maignan, Theo, Tonali, Leao are the only players that should be starters. The rest of the players should either be backups or be on another club.
To the people that wanna blame Pioli.
CDK a bust, Origi useless, Dest hasn’t even traveled with the squad since late January, Messias ass, Florenzi trash, Adli useless. Those are the players Maldini gave Pioli last summer and those are the players he spend the most money on and paid the highest salaries. You can also add Bakayoko and Ballo Toure from the previous summer and having grandpa Zlatan as the 3rd choice striker.
That’s the work of your beloved Sporting Director over the last 2 windows.
Few of us have said that, that man solely destroyed the quality of our squad over the last 2 years but we were attacked by his fanboys. Now you get the results of his work.
If Milan misses on top 4 Maldini needs to be fired the moment the final whistle blows of the final game of the season.
If Pioliis getting fired and he will be fired because of this season, Maldini also should be fired because he set his coach and the squad for failure with his work

    1. Pioli is the least of our problems. He has made us punch way above our weight already for two seasons. Some of our players have no business playing at this level.

Also, I would add that ours is such a young team. They need to gain experience at this level and will get better and better. Inter is the oldest team in Serie A. They have ready-made players who can hold their nerves at this level.

Let’s give Pioli a really good right-winger, attacking midfielder and striker and then see what he does. Then we can really judge him.

      1. I agree but as you see, most people blame Pioli and refuse to look at the quality of our squad and the man who constructed this squad.
Inter doesn’t only have the oldest squad in serie A but they have the best squad. As they did last year. They lost the scudetto and are bad this season because their coach actually sucks.
Pioli is not be the man to bring Milan back to the glory but what he has done with the lack of quality players at his disposal these last few years it’s only to be praised. Every new season he started with a weaker squad than the previous and was forced to start players that were back ups the previous season.
Pioli doesn’t deal with contacts, doesn’t sign, sell or let’s players leave for free.
That would be the sporting director

        1. It’s the sporting director that is given orders by the people above him . Maldini isn’t dumb enough to let players with unique combinations or irreplaceable skillsets, chemistry in the squad built over 5 seasons leave over a 1 to 2 millon euros. He knows how important for a team it is to stay together when they build a team that works well together, especially when you don’t have money to replace them with someone remotely close in talent and attributes. That is Gazikis written all over it. The minute he got to Arsenal they downspiraled and only improved slowly after he left. He let Van Persie go for nothing and they never replaced him. He is admired by cheapshit owners and Americans that are venture capitalists, not team owners set on achieving success. They play moneyball. Elliott could have sold to more ambitious owners and stalled effectively costing us the spot in CL, letting Botman and Sanches walk, bring CDK in too late. All Elliott’s fault and Cardinale who also refused to listen to Maldinis urgency when begging for funds to reinforce the team.

The owners refused to give him money to make obvious decisions and limit what he is allowed to offer players in salaries. He would never let Hakan leave for 500k or Kessie over 2 million, then drag on negotiations to potentially lose both for nothing. He played on great teams that were built by keeping a consistent core over a decade, he knows football better than the idiots giving him orders that go against his advice.

Maldini clearly said last season he was excited to add at least 2 great players to the team with the extra money we got by winning the league and keep the team together. Owners refused. Elliot could have insisted to force the new owners to let him secure the players he wanted or they would keep the club for another year to garantee our sporting success, let us make the right decisions short term to promise we stayed competitive long term, at a crucial point in our team’s roster building, they didnt.

    2. Of course you forget who identified and signed those players and you forget money was limited. You also seem to think Maldini is the only sporting director who has made bad signings, which shows you absolutely nothing about football. The ONLY other club in Europe that have signed players for low fees and saw their values increase to such a dramatic degree are Brighton. That’s how good Maldini is at his job. Mike, Kalulu, Bennacer, Tonali and Thiaw’s values have skyrocketed. And big clubs lose players for free all the time.

      1. Yes Maldini isn’t the only sporting director that makes bad signings but he is the only director that lost 4 high value starters for free in 12 months span, which is the reason why the money for transfers was limited. 100-125 mil lost because Maldini.
And all the directors that make bad signings and lose players for free pay for their bad work by losing their jobs.
Making 1 good signing for every 3 bad signings is somehow acceptable for the low standards of today’s Milan fans.
Check Napoli signings btw and how much they cost, before you say Brighton is the only 1.
Also, check the work of the great Manuel RUI Costa in Benfica before you talk that someone else no nothing about football. There are plenty other examples.
Keep making excuses for Maldini, keep watching our squad getting weaker.

        1. ” he is the only director that lost 4 high value starters for free in 12 months span, which is the reason why the money for transfers was limited. 100-125 mil lost because Maldini.”

Oh yeah… Why didn’t Maldini pay those salaries out of his own pockets? Because clearly Milan has unlimited transfer funds and it’s all on Maldini because he wanted to haggle over a dime? Sure, sure… If you say so. Sounds reeeeaally plausible. 100% on Maldini for sure. Glad you know how it went.

        2. Chelsea lost Rudiger, Christensen and Alonso for nothing. They also let the contracts of Drinkwater and Barkley run out so your claim that Maldini is the only sporting director to miss out on huge transfer fees is false and shows you don’t understand the realities of football. Lewandowski forced Bayern’s hand and where are they now? Eliminated early in the UCL. The same goes for Liverpool, Mane forced a move away and they have struggled all season. We are not close to being the wealthiest club in the world anymore, if players go elsewhere because we won’t match salaries, there’s nothing Maldini or anyone else can do about it.

As for Napoli, what a pathetic argument! They have won their first league title in 30 years and you think they’re the example to follow?!?!? They signed Osimhen for over €75 million, unlike us, they weren’t hampered by debts, they’ve been run well, had years and years of UCL money and cashed in on players e.g. Allan, Jorginho, Higuain etc. The reality is we have a limited number of saleable assets and you’re exactly the type of fan who would cry if management sold an important player, so it doesn’t really matter what you think. Your personal vendetta against Maldini and lack of gratitude for the stellar job he’s done exposes you.

As for Benfica, they’re always in the UCL so your argument is invalid. They are much better at player development than any Italian club. That allows them to get big fees and continually reinvest.

    3. Sure Maldini gave some bad signings this season but where’s the love for all the good signings over the last few years. The whole back line and double pivots are his touch: Maignan, Theo, Tomori, Kjaer, Thiaw, Kalulu, , Tonali, Benny. And all renewed their contracts. So if your going to look at his “bad” signings, at least be complete and state his good signings.

Also the loss of those players is resultant of them growing at Milan and is unable to afford them because of their growth. We’re no longer funded by a sugar daddy like Berlusconi. We have to watch our budget and because of that we will lose players. There’s only so much a director can do. Players these days run down their contracts to get higher money elsewhere.

      1. I love how people wanna continue saying “players these days run their contracts down to get more money elsewhere”.
Give examples. How many of them are in their primes and how many of them happened to the same director in 12 months.
Also if we are going to use lack of money to excuse Maldini poor work, why can’t that same excuse be used for Pioli. The squad Pioli has , which was provided by Maldini , is below Napoli’s , Inters and Juventus in talent, and on the same level with Roma, Lazio, Atalanta and maybe even Fiorentina.
So if we keeping Maldini because of excuses , we should also keep Pioli because of the same excuses.
Pioli just makes lemonade with the lemons Maldini gave him. And he has squeezed every ounce of them, even winning a scudetto with inferior squad to inters.

    4. I am glad the true fans are finally seeing through the utter bull$hit hatred of this Poli dude. lol Was about damn time. lmfao

  16. Calabria is so dump to understand dzeko tactically position himself to him due to his size,as a captain u can call upon ur team mates who matches his size

    1. I must have watched about 10 times on the replay that corner. The player who marks Djeko is initially Tomori and due to some players movements suddenly Djeko is left isolated with Calabria…. Not by chance, well played Inter.
This is dreadful defending -I still don’t get it how we keep failing to adequately address set pieces- and obviously at this stage/ level can be quite costly.

  17. Outplayed by the better team, no shame in that.

Squad needs to be better, players need to play better at this level.

  18. We all can see and focus on each team bench !

As much as i Hate inter merda …… their bench is HOT and Loaded with good players, as they say .Do you wanna see a TEAM , start from the Bench ( substitute)

I KNow and feel that we will give them HEELL nex week

    FORAZAAA MILAN

    1. True. Most Milan starters would be on the bench in Inter and ironically many Inter subs would/should be starters in Milan. That’s the honest truth.

  19. I wanted napoli in the semi finals not inter. Well am just having faith sha, hopefully smtin good will come an also pray Leao return b4 den. Cos am sure if Leao was in this match smtin good would hv happen cos I saw many spaces inter left at that wing. Forzamilan

  20. Score inter twice in the second leg it’s not easy but not impossible we need to rise our head and have a bounce back I believe we still can do it we are Milan.
    Forza Milan

      1. Are you implying that CDK is the difference between Milan wining or losing vs Inter.
If you re watch the 1st derby of the season, when Milan won 3-2 CDK was at fault for inter’s 1st goal because he totally lost Brozovic and CDK had no role in Milan scoring any of the Milan goals.
There is a reason he doesn’t play
        He is awful

        1. During that match Milan often lost the ball after CDK was subtituted. That goal wasn’t CDK fault, AM should have not been asked to track back into his own penalty area, the DMs and CBs should have covered the space.

          1. The regista Brozovic, who is the midfielder that usually plays deep in between their CBs when they are in possession, and the player for whom CDK is responsible in covering, was 1 on 1 with Maignan and CDK was running and eating grass and dust behind him watching him score, but it wasn’t his fault it was someone else’s fault. I got it.
We are defending busts even in obvious situations when they make mistakes

          2. How could the DMs and CBs let Brozovic run unopposed from his own midfield area to our penalty area? It’s like our middle area is empty. Defending is team play, not one man play. They should have seen Brozovic running ahead of CdK and provide cover.

          3. The second goal of this match is similar to that. Tonali was trailing behind Mikhtaryan and instead of providing cover, our CBs run away opening clear path for him to be 1 vs 1 with Maignan.

  21. Mixed feeling, second leg simone inzaghi will play defensive . They are already one step closer to final . AC Milan already lost 3 time to them this season : in supercoppa 1 times, in serie A 1 times and now in CL first leg. It is like pioli not learn from this 3 defeat. Next match spezia , pioli better focus to winning that since our chance to final now slim . This match are disaster for all player except tonali & maignan . I hope they improved second leg

  22. The lack of club spending on established players was evident today. Inter boast a bench of Lukaku Correa and Brozovic to name a few and we are left with Messias (who disgustingly couldn’t even hit the net on a crucial break away that could have made the return leg more feasible) and Poegba. When you have a youth (cheap) policy this is not unexpected. We have no depth and it shows. Without Leao we have basically no attack whatsoever. Then to lose Benny was the mail in the coffin. The poor lackadaisical start didn’t help. Calabria and Kajer were woeful in defending. Hope next week we can get an early goal then who knows not over yet but it’s a huge uphill battle that we have to win 3-0….The only good thing about today was Leao’s renewal. So those dip$hit Leao haters (you know the ones who said he’s shit and that he wouldn’t sign he was just playing us and that we should sell for 40M lol) can now STFU and enjoy that we have him and that we will get a huge transfer fee when we sell him in a few years. Hope we can win something again by then – but that will depend on ownership actually spending $$ on a few (RW, CAM, DM, back up LB and finally a in his prime striker) established players and not just buy cheap youth and pray they develop – which unfortunately looks more and more unlikely esp if we miss CL. It backfired this season. Can’t afford another one like that. We will see what Redbird is all about very soon

  23. This team simply isn’t good enough, and that starts from the top. The simple question of the summer needs to be: what kind of football will Milan play? The answer then needs to cascade throughout the club.

Pioli runs the same tactics despite player absences — both temporary and permanent. That’s a coaching failure, and it’s why the team is completely predictable. It’s also why the team cannot break down a park the bus defense unless there’s individual brilliance.

I’m genuinely grateful to Pioli. He got the team further than they should have. However, he’s also showing that he’s plateaud.

Our front office has shown consistent failures. I won’t harp on the free transfers, but to lose 200M in value for free is a near deathblow to almost every club. Purchases have seemed random and misaligned, and that showed today.

I won’t say that it’s over because anything can happen, but I am pessimistic about the final few weeks of this campaign.

  24. We just don’t have a quality team and depth, it’s super obvious but sad as well, especially since we were the defending champions of Italy and yet instead of strengthening we got weaker as a team and lost Kessie and worse still the management did not bother to finance any players in January window. Piolo is not to blame but he did get his tactics wrong on this day but he.has at least helped Milan get this far in spite of the poor squad at his disposal which is very commendable. Forza Milan for second leg but we need a shift in mindset of management to get seriously competitive with other big clubs….

  25. It was a tough match as expected. A huge issue was the poor positioning in defending by Milan. Inter took advantage of the loose defending from our midfield. They outnumbered our defense and had a few of their players unmarked on several of their attacking runs. Losing Bennacer so early in the game was an influence too.

  26. Guys I believe that we can come back I really do.
Hopefully Lèao & Bennacer can comeback and completely change the way of the game

  27. Tonali and Diaz were the worst players tonight. Milan need to work on the passes of their squad and improve their passing skills. Their passes are very horrible. Pirlo, Seedorf and Gattuso always delivered accurate passes.

    1. What game did you watch? – Toanli was far and away our best player and they ony one that appeared to want to win – Unfortunately a lot of his productivity was wasted trying to cover Krunic who looked like a little boy lost!

  28. ucl semis are far better than what was expected for this team and I will take it,but hurts to lose to inter 3 times in a row, and be completely outclassed in all 3

    1. Agreed, and for this reason the stupid dropping of points to small teams is even more relevant. The team got carried away by the CL and we’re just not ready to go so deep in such a competition while solidifying being a consistent top 4 side. Until we can do so then primacy must be given to the league. That’s not to say that we ought to crash out of the CL in the groups, but qualifying from the groups and a top 4 league finish in relatively comfortable fashion is the floor that needs to be established before these players can think about playing finals against Madrid, City, Liverpool or whatever.

  29. The party’s almost over this month. Back to hard work making competitive main dan depth squad is a must to be in the ucl final guys.

  30. The MOTM was the one who caused the second goal to score. Yes Tonali did well afterwards but he costed us that goal. He got caught pushing up too much, which led to Krunic having to cover and as a result no double pivots in front of defence. It’s why you see this gap. No fault of the CBs or anything. This was a breakdown in positioning by the pivots. Bennacer was already up top, Tonali didn’t need to go for the ball. Smh
Salad should have been MOTM, not even sure why he went off when he was really the only spark.

Anyways thankfully it’s only 2 goals. I honestly think if Leao was playing the game would have went differently.

I don’t see how ppl look at a single game and spew all this hate about Pioli, Maldini, Massara and the club owners. A single game has nothing to do with them bar Pioli. We’re in the UCL semis just won a Scudetto and still ppl ain’t happy. Where were u the last 10 years?

Finally that ref was awful. Waay too many calls against our players but when similar fouls on us it wasn’t called.

    1. No fault from the cbs?? Wtf… Huuuuuge fault from the CBs! Tonali was partially to blame and Tomori was the other if not bigger half. He overmarked his man well beyond the field across and beyond kjaer… it’s ridiculous. That literally kids defending lessons.

      1. I’ll have to go check back Tomor’s positioning but the players who were supposed to be in front of the defence like they did for the rest of the game simply were not there. In the build up you could clearly see the massive gap ahead of the back 4 caused by Tonali and Krunic’s movements

  31. Losing to the same team 3x in the same season is not acceptable,

Losing to the same team 3x in the same season without scoring a single goal is comical and inexplicable!

Losing to the same team 3x in the same season without scoring a single goal, and that team is Inter.. is borderline blasphemy.

Blaming certain people would be easy, but now is not the time and fortunately, the situation could still be redeemed in less than a week time. I just hope that everyone involved has the answer by then and would rectify this.

    Forza Milan per sempre!

  32. We analyse each player’s moves but do not look at the whole picture. When we have the ball, instead of all players moving forward, we see them all staying in their place, nobody moving.

    1. Yeah we’re sometimes confused and have little tikitaka flow of the ball. Something to resolved b4 2nd leg

    2. Also… Each pass is so slow that the target player has to stop and wait for the ball. That gives the opponent time to reorganize and get closer to the player receiving the ball.

The same issue has bothered us for years now. Speed up the passes and time the passes better to running players.

  33. Well I think we can do it in the second leg
After all at the second half we played inter just that we do not have any player who can score, and even Giroud underperformed he can’t trap the ball, run with ball not he best passer in the team but at the end we still end up using him coz he is our best
Well with the arrival of leao i think we can do it.
That match ought to be a draw to me if not that our players can score

  34. Maldinis Heir. football now a days are based on results, gone are the days when a coach will get a year or so to gel his team, if Pioli were in England he will be looking for a club in the new season, rotating the team against lesser oppositions and cant win a game, that says a lot about his coaching skills, Milan needs to find a coach, and a good coach.

  35. Well we played out of sorts this was not usual milan it seems like without leao we go all over the place tactically we don’t have plan b….it literally hurts to loose with inter 3 times nows.just concentrate on league now. Our road to final is more or less gone….qualifying for champions league is more important than semi finals where tbh its done and dusted…..inter are capable of scoring their midfield is way better than us..their midfield executed it perfectly…these are facts which we can’t deny….so let’s concentrate on league….

  36. We tried. No blames. No hatred. We are in the UCL semifinal. Leao’s injury was a massive blow, both in quality and psychologically. It would be a bit much to expect Leao on his own will turn the whole table on second leg.. Though I believe he has the qualities.

Pioli tried his best. Thanks to this man we have a clear philosophy on how we play. Yes our attack needs work.. But a good team needs qualities to play which we don’t have yet.

I do have a few question marks on Pioli’s subs… Like Saele sub this match. Why? Just Why? He was the only good thing besides Tonali in the game.

On the bright side, at least we won’t have to be humiliated by Mancity/Real in the final with a 7up or something. This team already punched above their weight. Thanks to the boys, coach and every one involved aka management, club staff, coaching staff, trainers and everyone.

Looking forward.. I think these are the things we must do next season.

    1. Add coaching staff who are good in technical aspects and can improve our players technically to upgrade their skills as basic as passing, long passing, crosses, 1-2-1s etc. This is a very young team and can be built into superstars, the qualities are there. Saele is a hidden gem BTW.

    2. A RW and a ST. We have 3 beasts in the midfield and we can add more. We just need a ST and RW up front with Leao and give him freedom to play his own game.

    3. Plug defensive holes. Whatever is the problem in defense, it needs to be shut. I don’t know what happened to Tomori but I think he needs to be sold if a right offer comes along. He is very error prone.

    4. Pioli needs help in the attacking phase. We need a few new assistant coaches who knows their craft and Pioli needs to let them do their work to train this team on HOW to build an attack. Clearly we have no idea what we are doing in attack and it costed us 21 points this season. We don’t know how to unlock defense and Luck is not permanent.

    5. This team, needs a leader. Maignan is on the way to become a one. I love how commanding he is. Kjaer is one, but his form is in decline which comes with low confidence that is very bad for a leader.

    6. Kalulu needs to tried as a RW. He is not good defensively, but his attacks are DAMN GOOD. I still remember Kalulu’s crosses to Leao and Zlatan. Don’t know why Pioli can’t see the obvious. We have a good player with all the best RW qualities in the team but we are playing him in the defense lol

    7. Pobega.. needs to play A LOT More. He has played well in last 3 games he was on the field, but we don’t seem to value him enough.

And Finally.. FCUK this moneyball crap. I am tired of pennypincher owners.

    Forza Milian.

    1. Did you miss the last decade? Spending 💰 on mediocre players is what got us into debt. Milan aren’t in the market for the best players in the world, they’re in the second tier market.

      1. If you consider his skills.. he checks ALL The boxes needed as a RW. Passing.. fantastic, Crossing.. great.. Pace.. incredible.. easily gets away from his mark, good defensive workrate. NONE of our current RWs has ANY of Kalulu’s qualities. What’s wrong with using him as a RW exactly? Just wanting to know your opinion is all.

  37. All I can say is without Leao this team is very weak no matter how lazy many of you thinks he is, we need 3 of such lazy player like you call him that can run, score, create or assist.

No one, absolutely no one was disturbing Inter’s defense, no one was able to take on a defender, no one was able to create.

Milan doesn’t have the quality inter has that’s the truth but it was so obvious without Leao, I just hope some of you that drag him here will realise his importance though.

  38. Yes without leao the team is weak ,and has been said no one can can take on players like him to deliver decent balls into Olivier Giroud…now about Olivier Giroud he worked his socks off last night ,and had no service at all ..so in fact despite not having any service I thought him and yes believe it or not DIVOCK ORIGI were the best two players for AC Milan ..yes the team was that poor ..Salamakers was awful and did not put in one decent cross ,and very unusual to see Thea hernadaz not attacking at all ..the defense was disorganised and all over the place …getting in each others way …yes slight improvement in the second half …Did we miss rafeol leao you bet we did …
I think it will be very hard to overcome the two goal deficit but with rafeol leao back ..I believe we can win the match …We cannot play worse than we did last night .
