Player Ratings: AC Milan 3-3 Salernitana – Giroud fairytale amid farewell galore

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan failed to give Stefano Pioli and co a win in their final game with the club as Salernitana held them to a draw at San Siro. Several players did well, though, and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out how we decide the player ratings. From the scale to what affects the rating, we have compiled everything there.

Starting XI

Mirante (6): He definitely could have done better on the first goal, seeing as Simy was so close to the goal, but he made a good stop shortly after. He couldn’t do much on the second and he wasn’t on the pitch for the third. While it wasn’t a great performance, he gets a pass here as it’s the last game of his career.

Calabria (6.5): The captain did okay defensively, most of the time anyway, and he always wanted to get involved when going forward. That ended up paying off as he scored with a nice header in the second half.

Gabbia (6): An average display from the academy product, defensively speaking anyway. He nearly got a great goal with a header but the goalkeeper somehow kept it out.

Tomori (6): Similarly to his colleague, we have certainly seen better but it was still a decent performance. The goals conceded were more so due to collective errors rather than individual ones.

Hernandez (6.5): We saw some very good trademark runs for the Frenchman and he was unlucky not to get a goal, disallowed for a very narrow offside after VAR check (Chukwueze-esque). In good form, he’s crucial for the Rossoneri.

Florenzi (6.5): A different role for him today which he handled very nicely, assisting Giroud for his goal with a great corner kick. The veteran continued to have great delivery on his set pieces and also tried to get on the ball as much as possible.

Reijnders (6): The Dutchman had a couple of nice runs in the attacking third and it could have paid off, but ultimately it was just a decent display from the midfielder.

Pulisic (7): He was really involved in a lot for Milan this evening and created several good chances. He eventually got an assist with a great cross for Calabria. A productive performance like this one is exactly what we like to see.

Bennacer (6): As always, he covered a lot of ground and was comfortable on the ball. He could have been a bit more polished in the final third, though, but it was a decent display overall by the Algerian.

Leao (7): Just like his opposite man, he was involved in almost everything and although his goal was lucky, he was unlucky not to get an assist. He will remain the star for next season and it will be very interesting to see him under a new manager.

Giroud (7.5 – MOTM): The perfect goodbye for the striker who broke the No.9 curse at Milan, finding the back of the net with a lovely finish. He continued to create problems for the Salernitana defence and he will certainly be missed, as well as hard to replace.

Substitutes

Adli (5.5): A bit too sloppy on the ball, really from his first involvement, and it was a sub that didn’t exactly help defensively.

Caldara (5.5): He didn’t look convincing at all, which certainly isn’t surprising given that he hasn’t played at all this season. He could have done a lot better on the second goal at least.

Kjaer (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating. Thank you for everything, Simon!

Jovic (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

Nava (N/A): We didn’t see enough to give him a rating.

The manager

Pioli (6): A strange final game and result for the manager, even if it was perhaps fitting given how the season has played out. The subs were pretty much decided beforehand and Milan dominated up until that point, while tactics clearly take second place on a night like this.

  1. Went out in Pioli style, overly focused on attacking football, ignoring the defense, and playing players out of position. Will miss this manager, Good Luck to you Mr. Pioli on your next adventure. Pioli’s on fire!

    1. Such a stupid comment. It wouldn’t have mattered if the team was down by 4 goals, the subs were already pre-determined. The game was done until he brought in players for their final game and at that point who cares what the score was? Today was a borderline friendly game.

      1. Great insight! Mr Unimpressed is on fire! No duh it was a friendly and I don’t care that we drew but the match summed up our season, genius.

  2. I’m watching the send off. I don’t speak Italian but I am pretty sure the sendoff gets a 10/10.

Thank you Giroud and Kjaer. Thank you for a class act Mr. Pioli.

Thank you Milan for ensuring Pioli got such a send off before announcing his successor.

    Class Act.

  3. Emotional send off in a very Pioli like final game. On to bigger and bolder adventures. And a big thank you to Stefano for all he has done in his time here.

  4. Next time when somebody writes that pulisic can’t and doesn’t beat his man I’m referring them to watch this game

    1. He was playing against Salernitana, not a competitor to Milan. I am not saying he can’t win 1 vs 1, but you can’t jugde against the weakest opponent possible.

      1. Weakest a?. You people really are so clueless about football..

Mr unimpressed and you can go watch the diamond league together. Easier to understand

    2. Last few games I’ve noticed Pulisic trying a lot more 1 v 1’s and succeeding. I hope he keeps doing it. Well ofc season is over lol. I meant continue next season like this one with more dribbling though

    3. I’ll make sure to send them to watch Pulisic beat Serie B level players…. okay. Not the flex you think it is.

  5. Great send-off by the club for Giroud, Kjaer, Pioli, and even Mirante and Caldara, who in today’s game played more minutes than in their entire Milan career.
The game was exactly what we saw over the last 2 years. Mike Grella on the half time show was questioning why is Milan letting Pioli leave after they were up 2-0 at half time vs the worst team in the league. In the 2nd half we saw why is Milan letting Pioli go. Another goal given up from corner, a problem over the entire 5 years under Pioli. Salernitana had a total of 17 points this season, 2 were from the games vs. Milan. In 3 years, Milan played vs Salernitana 6 times and ended up with only 2 wins and 4 draws. They were in the relegation zone each year.
If Pioli left earlier I would have better memory of him but he is a perfect example of You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Good luck to Giroud. Awesome player, wished he would have scored another goal to finish with 50. I also wish he came to Milan few years earlier. He’d be missed the most.
Good luck to Simon Kjaer. Great start of his Milan career but after the injury in ’21 he wasn’t the same player anymore. Even today he got bullied on the 3rd goal.
Caldara was unfortunate to have back to back ACL and Achilles injuries. He and Andrea Conti were so unlucky in their Milan careers.
Let’s see what the summer brings for next season.

  6. That pretty much sums up our season. Unpredictable, disappointing when least expected, exciting at times…thanx Giroud, Kjaer, Mr P…thanx for scudetto 19. Now for the reset button…looking forward to next season

  7. The midfield disappearing defensively again is why I’m not shocked by result. Milan played all season with a 5-0-5 because all the midfielders want to score so bad, just give to the front and offer support, stop crowding the forwards, running into their space constantly. This is what happens when you have all attacking minded midfielders.

  8. The marks are very generous.
They did dominate much of the game.
But then gave up 3 soft goals.
And the goals felt inevitable in the last 10 mins.
Against a team that has has an awful season.

  9. I love Adli but he’s played a part in quite a few goals, against Milan. Today he was beat in the midfield buildup on 3rd goal. usually his mistakes are around the box.
    he’s still a project.

    1. he is a project? He is gone. Upon reviewing this season, there are far too many goals that came directly from his mistakes. I would be ok with that, but its his lack of effort that is so brutal…he can’t keep up with his man…so he just slowly fades as far as he can from the play instead of trying to fight for a foul, position, or anything…we all see you trying to hide…if its that obvious to everyone watching, the tape study will be brutal.

      1. Then you have been watching a different adli.
Because he has been TRYING. and he even speaks against himself when he does bad.

    1. for me he’s better than Thiaw & Kalulu, rating only mention how he conceded the goal, but not hih intercept, man marking, key pass & aerial.
an old-fashion Italian CB not so fast but strong & tall, same kind like Acerbi. the problem is he’s too injury prone & not young anymore.
for G & Kjaer, thanks & goodbye legend.
for Pioli, see u soon in january Mr. Fixer

  10. I knew we weren’t going to win this game against the worst team to ever compete in Serie A… Oh well – it was great to see Giroud kissing the badge when he scored and Kjaer for one last send off. These guys and Ibra all leaving the locker room over such a short space of time… We need people like Hummels to come in because one thing Leao ain’t is a leader.

  11. AC Milan should be fined for unsportsmanlike behavior in the last two matches of the season. F’ing disgraceful. Ceremonies are nice, and thanks for everyone who is leaving, but an official serie a match is an official seria a match. How much lower can we sink? And in san siro against the worst team in the league.

Giroud, Pioli, and everyone on the field who was celebrating- You have no respect for your profession, and you have no respect for AC Milan. A big FU to all of you, disgusting disgraceful lot.
