AC Milan clinched all three points in a dominant display against Bologna on Tuesday evening. Several players impressed a lot and below are the ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI
Maignan (6): Bologna had a mere two shots on target, so the No.16 wasn’t exactly called into action that often. When he was, however, he did well and also had decent passing throughout the game. A good win to celebrate the renewal.
De Winter (6.5): He has really grown a lot in the last few weeks, going from uncertain to commanding at the back. Tonight, he won a lot of duels and showcased great positioning, both in terms of blocking crosses and winning the ball back by stepping up.
Gabbia (6.5): I thought he used some smart tricks to throw Castro off his game, which really helped Milan take control of the play. On top of that, he remained calm even in difficult build-up situations, which is so important in his position.
Pavlovic (6): Solid defending as always, though Bologna did get through a couple of times on his side. Nevertheless, he sacrificed himself a lot with runs forward, even if that is something we have become used to from him.
Athekame (6.5): It was a big chance for him and you have to say that he took it. He was always on the move, more or less, and the cross for Nkunku on the first goal was proof of what he can do in the final third. It was actually a really nice cross with his weaker foot.
Fofana (6): The Frenchman was involved in the first goal, winning the ball back nicely, and he also had some nice passes right around the same time. That said, he definitely faded quite a bit as the game went on, hence the rating.
Modric (7): Milan put themselves in some tricky situations in the build-up at times, but the Croatian was always there to rescue them with his movement. This was absolutely crucial to frustrate Bologna, who pressed and pressed. Not to mention that the veteran’s passing was really good too.
Rabiot (8 – MOTM): I have said it many times before, but his importance cannot be overstated. He was calm and collected on the first goal, finding RLC in the box, and he showcased great awareness on his own goal. Both to get to the ball first and to use his head to bring it into his stride. Furthermore, he was great aside from these moments.
Bartesaghi (6): With it being a relatively quiet night defensively, and the fact that Milan attacked more on their right, he wasn’t always the most involved player. Having said that, he was incredibly solid and did well when called upon. The only negative, like Pavlovic, would be the couple of times Bologna actually got through on that flank.
Loftus-Cheek (7): He had a huge miss early in the game, attempting to round the keeper, but he made up for it with a nice finish on the first goal. Then, he played a perfectly-weighted pass for Nkunku just before the second. I gave him a lot of criticism in the live blog for the first miss, but credit where credit is due.
Nkunku (7): It was a pretty poor header just before RLC’s goal, but there’s no denying that the movement was perfect. The same can be said about the penalty he won and calmly converted, picking the right run and rounding the keeper well. He did have another good 1v1 that he could have done more with, but overall it was very positive.
Substitutes
Tomori (6): Since he played in the right wing-back role, he had coverage behind him and thus had a relatively calm appearance off the bench. It just seemed like he enjoyed playing and that was reflected in his actions.
Ricci (N/A): He came on at the same time as Tomori, but aside from a few passes here and there, I didn’t see enough to give him a rating here.
Jashari (6): We saw some good defending from the Swissman, who really has a knack for using his low centre of gravity well. He also had a nice pass for Füllkrug, putting him through on goal.
Füllkrug (5.5): Although he was involved in a lot, he needed to do a lot better with the 1v1. With that much time and space, it needs to be a goal.
The manager
Allegri (7): Questions were asked about the starting eleven but in hindsight, he got everything right tonight. Not just the player selection either, but also the overall game plan and tactics. He should be really pleased with this one.

No Füllkrug did more than RLC in 10 minutes. When fully fit, Füllkrug will always start. He´s doing very well, especially given his injury. Hr´s the prerfect striker for this team. If he keeps this up, we need to keep him and forget about Vlahovic.

Sure, RLC scored a goal but let’s not forget the miss before that. Unbelievably poor effort and I bet even all our CBs would have made a better attempt on goal.
Besides the goal, what did he really offer? Nothing. I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again: RLC continues to do nothing a primavera player couldn’t do. He’s absolutely the most overrated player in our squad. Period.
Well he also set up the the second goal with a nice pass in to Nkunku. Overall he played well and gave Bologna problems. This is not the game to criticize him.
The fact that he scored and played well is bothersome to many. Makes you wonder what game they were watching…Go figure!
While I agree that RLC is highly irregular and more often than not he has bad games, yesterday wasn’t one of those. He was involved in two of our 3 goals (scoring one and setting up the play that ultimately resulted in the second one), which is not negligible. In addition to this (which was already quite significant), he had other good moments (except for the big miss, for which he later redeemed himself). He should be criticized when he does poorly but to be fair, also praised when he does well (which, yes, is rarer, but it happens). We were not rating his season. We were rating THIS game.
Allegri doesn’t agree with you and neither does the England manger. I suppose they don’t know anything right? But of course you are entitled to your opinion.
Fofana has had some stinkers this season but today he was very important in winning his duels and recovering so many balls

I agree with you, he also escaped his man in a tight spot a few times and earned at least one, maybe two, yellow cards for Bologna players.

Agree. I thought he was good. Did note a couple of bad pass give aways near the end but the game was won.
Nice win and good game, thought Bolongna would cause a whole lot of problems for us, but we just cruised through.
Loved the urgency from midfield and good to see Dewinter in form, also Anthekame is not bad, like I say those who ain’t given time cannot be expected to perform magic at a get go. Alegri should learn to rotate or at best make substitutions, we have the required quality on the bench.

Yes we do, and a quite good one. SOmetimes it takes an injury to force an old bird like Allegri to give the young guys a chance. Athekame looked great. Deadly crosses and a brilliant ball over the top that put Nkunku in on goal in the second half. No rush Saleamakers.
And all the people screaming that we need another CB… that wanted to get rid of DeWinter after a poor performance… He’s been our best CB the last 4 matches.

The squad is good enough to get top 4 and they will. There was no signing that was going to put us ahead of Inter anyways.

The issue is that we still have no Modric sub. Casado/Perrone/Altimira/Bernabe/Vermeeren would have all been great additions
and I can’t agree on CB either… no one was saying deWinter was a bad buy…
we are playing back 3 with 4 defensive options. we are one injury away from having sub issues there. that’s a depth not quality issue. Gila/Lucumi are a must in the summer
RLC is still extra, at least with the wages he gets. he’s not worth 4M
Jashari is literally Modric’ deputy. Plays exactly as calm and composed and has brilliant vision.
he was 8 at the Brugge (with horse-load of stamina) and he’s a versatile player but he is still conservative with his playmaking… registas are a different breed.
he’s more Rabiot-esque player than Modric… also with his injury he can’t suddenly play like that. he needs more time to regain his form and stamina… it’s been like 2 months since he has been back.
any of those players will bring more upside than downside… we also have Bondo coming back for box-to-box style player.
Jashari is his replacement. It is already clear. Ease off the excessive analytics. Gosh!

Jashari is no 6. Even Ricci played as no 6 at Torino. We’re well covered on that area.
Reasonable analysis but Bartesaghi can play as LCB. So not quite as dire.as you suggest with only a game a week
I do agree we need a 5th for UCL next season. So add a quality CB to push Tomori in the summer.
Both Ricci and Jashari can cover the deep lying role. Not as well but well enough. Jashari looks like he could get there. Ricci seems damned my his own versatility.
RLC is a back up 9 or 9.5 at this point. Dude should take a wage cut and skill up on hold up.
I was bummed Odogu didn’t get 20 minutes tonight (or that there were no Futuro kids on the overly short bench).
Great to see that someone is also using his brain a little. Agree with you. We will need some signings in the summer, because the squad is thin for champions league, but we definitely dont need them now. Moreover some expensive gambles. The squad is going forward on great tactics and teamplay.
I said as soon De Winther and Athekame as both were signed that they needed to be given a chance. This idea that they could be replaced with more randos is ridiculous. Players need time to adapt.
I don’t think anyone saw that coming – Nkunku, RLC strike force sounded like the worst idea in Milan’s history but somehow delivered… Fofana, Athekame didn’t have me hiding behind the couch… DeWinter continued his good form, Rabiot/Modric outstanding as usual… But man of the match has to be the ref. I honestly think that’s the first game all season it didn’t feel like the ref was a closet inter fan. Who’s up next?

Definite growth from Nkunku. Guess all you have to do is threaten him with another striker and the guy lights up on the pitch.
Athekame looked pretty good. KDW growth apparent again. Granted it’s against a Bologna that are in poor form if we’re talking about NKunku for example, but I’d say this was Nkunku’s best game in Milan colors so far.

In total control from starr to finish. Outplayed, outsmarted Bologna and game them nothing. At no point I was concerned that Bologna could score.
Great game by Rabiot. He was everywhere.
Best games of the season for Nkunku and Athekame. Nkunku looked so much better dropping deeper in his natural role.
De Winter continues to look better and better.

The rest were very good.

Honestly this is as close as we can get to a perfect game and/or the worst Bologna I remember seeing.
We dominated pretty much the entire game, created big chances from start to finish, scored in bunches and didn’t concede anything resembling a big chance, let alone a goal.
Maignan: just give him a N/A, wasn’t really tested tonight.
Pavlović, Gabbia & De Winter: what should they do to have more than a 7 or 8 ? Yes you can always nitpick an error or 2, but this is a great game from the defense.
Bartesaghi: Not a lot going forward, but solid game defensively.
Athekame: Solid game from him. Many attacks, a cross which resulted in a goal. Perhaps he can really be a good RWB with more minutes.
Modrić & Rabiot: You can never praise them enough. They really elevated the midfield to another level. And tonight, especially Rabiot.
Fofana: I’m not his biggest fan, or his fan at all, but let’s be honest, Modrić and Rabiot aside, he is the only midfield that can make something happen forward. Yes, he is very inacurate, but he has some of the best off-ball movement in the team and always plays forward rather than sideways or backwards.
Jashari: nice entrance from the kid. Almost got an assist and was quite active.
Ricci: N/A
Loftus-Cheek: not always good, but his 2 good moments resulted in a goal and a penalty, so good job.
Nkunku: looked more active and more poisonous for the defenders tonight.
Füllkrug: Not a good performance as he missed many sitters.
Good game by Allegri but I want to ask: was having Bartesaghi, Tomori, De Winter, Gabbia & Pavlović all at once and also Ricci for Loftus-Cheek really necessary ?
There were simply no more attacking subs. Tomori might have come looking like bringing another cb, but he was playing classic wing back.
Ricci for loftus was also not really a defensive change, there just wasnt another option. With that we played 5-2cdm-2cam-1 formation.
From the first ten minutes, one can tell that this would be a good game for the team.
After scoring, they didn’t sat back as they usually do.
I think this is the best first half from Milan that I hace seen in a long while.
I hope they keep this kind of performance rather than sitting deep and inviting pressure.

Arguably Milan’s best game of the season; in complete control from the first to the last minute, with virtually all players doing well, including the subs. The only negative part is that Davide seems to have collected a muscle injury. This is the Milan we all want to see: dominant, organized, and clinical.
I calciatori
Maignan – A privileged spectator who didn’t have to do much because this time, his defenders completely annuled Bologna’s offense. Mike had just one mildly difficult stop which he handled easily so he didn’t have the opportunity to increase his score by a lot. Otherwise he played well in terms of organizing the defense around him and got a clean sheet. 6.5
Gabbia – Solid game, winning almost all duels and well-positioned. 7.
Pavlovic – Welcome back! He had his usual solid game and was able to even help the offense a little bit. 7.
De Winter – This is his fifth solid game in a row. He looked composed and mature, and mistake-free. 7.
Athekame – The biggest surprise; had his best game with Milan’s jersey, and showed that indeed he can be a good deputy to relieve Alexis. One laments that Allegri didn’t trust him sooner; maybe if Alexis hadn’t played against Roma, he wouldn’t have aggravated his injury (will have to miss at least the Pisa game as well). Athekame did it all – good defensive work and very good support for the offense with good crosses. 7.5
Bartesaghi – Solid, error-free game. Attentive defensively; not as daring in terms of supporting the offense (which is why I rated him slightly lower than his companions), but excellent effort (was the player who covered the most kilometers). Unfortunately, collected a muscle injury which is a pity because he’s been an important piece of this defense. 6.5
Rabiot – MOTM with no doubt. Great assist, great goal scored, and he was everywhere, helping the team in multiple ways (second biggest distance covered in kilometers). A bit of fatigue at the very end had him a bit less precise, missing an opportunity for a fourth goal. Still, spectacular display by Adrien. 8.5
Modric – Very solid defensive work; played really like a defensive midfielder tonight, and did it very efficiently, which is one of the reasons why the defense did so well. 7.
Fofana – Had his best game of the season. Was dangerous, attempting on target twice and only missing another attempt by a little; recovering balls, making good passes. 7.5
RLC – Missed spectacularly what should have been Milan’s first goal but redeemed himself with good passes and a score. Had a positive influence throughout his time on the pitch. 7.5.
Nkunku – Also with his best game of the season. Finally, very dangerous with good passes and good infiltration into Bologna’s defense, and he was very attive throughout the game, miles ahead of his usual discreet participations; was instrumental in the build-up for the first goal as the keeper had to bounce his header back to our offense, then Nkunku earned a PK, and took it very well, scoring a goal. 8.

Estupiñan – Played only a few minutes but everything he did was well done, including being dangerous in offense with flicks and crosses, and winning all duels in defense. This is good because we’ll need him in Bartesaghi’s absence. 7.
Jashari – Entered the game very well, made a spectacular pass to set up Füllkrug for the fourth goal, which the German unfortunately missed. Jashari also played well defensively. 7.
Ricci – Attive and dynamic, very correct, error-free; a bit less brilliant than other companions. 6.5
Tomori – Didn’t have much to do, so he didn’t have opportunities to build up his score, but didn’t do anything wrong either. 6.
Füllkrug – Really should have scored in that great long pass he got from Jashari, which lowers his score. Had another opportunity in which he headed the ball well but the keeper was able to save. Had a couple of good defensive actions. Despite the big miss, was still more helpful than not and could have earned a bit more than a pass like a 6.5, but like I said, his miss encourages me to drop his score by half a point, so, 6.

Mister Allegri obviously prepared this game very well, and outcoached Italiano which hasn’t been the case in recent games against Bologna. Not only Allegri’s team was defensively solid and organized, but also, the offense was efficient; and this time, Allegri didn’t make the mistake of encouraging the players to defend too much after jumping ahead on the scoreboard. The line-up was good in terms of resting essential players like Puli and Rafa, and the subs happened in good moments, and with good impact. 8.
Oh good. Allegri said that Bartesaghi did not have a muscle injury, only cramps! What a relief!

He was a 6 , nothing more. Barely noticed him this match except for the couple times he was beat on defense.
I did rate him lower than his defensive companions. I do think that he was mostly very solid defensively. Yes, he didn’t do much offensively which is precisely why I lowered his score, like I said.
Why do you hate Davide so much? That’s pretty much your “contribution” to these rating threads; you come here to bash Bartesaghi.
No hate at all. I just think you should not show favoritism towards him in the ratings which you always do. Even by your own standards, it should be a 6. No big mistakes but nothing really positive either. I would argue he was our least effective player today. Anyone else would have gotten a pass, a 6 from you.

I think Luigi rated De Winter slightly too low for the same reason. That guy owned the entire box today. 7.5 he as noticably better than two other excellent performances.
Indeed on reflection I do think Bartesaghi was less adventurous going forward but this was because he had the sense to stay home as Pavlovic and De Winter got forward frequently. That reinforces the 6.5.
Oh and also this: of the 16 players for Milan tonight, I gave to Bartesaghi the third lowest score, so what’s your problem???

Feels good to see you were so wrong and impatient with DeWinter, Athekame, and Nkunku from the beginning. I just hope Fans like you have learned your lessons to give players time to grow into a new team.

Yes, I did make the mistake of being very impatient with these players. I actually have already acknowledged this mistake in other threads.
I always say that players need time to adapt to a new team and new league. It seems like regarding these three, I didn’t follow my own advice.

Also to all the experts on mercato. You all hate estupinan, and say we need another deputy in left (also right) wing back. Estupinan was kinda expensive signing and he is more than decent sub, a lot of teams dont have such lucurious experienced sub. If you wanna better, you want to spend 20 or 30 mil on new wing back to sit on the bench? Where is the logic?
The same on the right. Despite this game, athekame is still not ready, thats true. But sealamakers is one of the most reliable player and you want to spend another 20 mil, to have another substitute to salad and athekame. All in winter mercato, with another striker, cb and midfielder.
There will be time for it in the summer, we will need them for next season, but not now, any of that signing wont make a difference. So guys, please start to think a little before criticising any step of anybody in this great club
the left back should be more play at 60′ and start games that are improtant for rotation . sicne we will be inc hampions league next season we will need one definteitly
I dont know, for me estupinan is more than capable of doing that. He is not coming in 60 min because of the great stamina bartesaghi has, allegri is not forced to change him at 60.
But for me, estupinan is still decent starter many games, i dont think we need to change him right away.
The problem with Estupiñan is that he is irregular. He tends to have good games like tonight, but also some disastrous games. He often does poorly against speedy right wingers.
But yes, he is a decent deputy for Bartesaghi.

Bologna is not a very limited team. They have a very good coach (Italiano), a very dangerous player (Orsolini) and they always created trouble for us when they play at home. Why did they look so flat? Because we played so well!!! When a team is very dominant like we were tonight with basically ALL our players doing well, even good teams like Bologna can’t do much.
Sure, they are not Inter, Juve, Napoli or even Roma and Como… but they are not a very limited team.
They has 2 shots on target, both of which were comfortable saves, so they offered little threat.
They have lost their last 3 Serie A games, including against Genoa (14th) and Fiorentina (18th).
They are in 10th place in the league.
They are the very definition of a limited team.
Yes we played well and of course that has a huge impact on the opponent. It was nice to see us play a good game after a series of very mediocre performances
Look, we lost to Cremonese, drew with Parma and Pisa, and had games with no shots on target. Does that mean that we are a very limited team? Bologna has had a bad stretch; it happens, including to us. It doesn’t mean that they are inherently a very limited team.

I feel that Isak was too harsh in most of his grades for the players. This was simply Milan’s best performance of the season, so several players deserved higher scores, which is what I did in my post.

Kudos to the ref. This was one of the best refereeing jobs of the season, and it is so rare to see this in Italy! Finally a ref who is competent and not biased against Milan.
Agree on ref. It was refreshing to see someone run the game with no bias against Milan. Can we have him for the rest of the season too?
Good to get a comfortable win. I would have subbed earlier but other than that Mister set us up correctly. The opposition have been on a poor run of form and tonight was no different but we did capitalize when the opportunities presented. Good to rest Leão and a nice break before the next match, hopefully we can recover more players during this reprieve.

I would just like to say that our most important player this season has been Jonathan Rowe. If he hasn’t picked a fight with Rabiot at Marseilles at the start of the season, who knows where we’d be. But as it is we’ve been blessed with peak Rabiot is Rabiot is Rabiot and long may it continue.
Aside from being calm, technically superb and a leader we’ve been struggling for, he seems to have a genuinely good time playing football for us, in the same way an on-form Leao does. A pleasure to watch.

You failed to mention and rate the late sub Estupinan. Good effort rate players on a solid performance and team win. Acknowledged the RLC improvement after a bad miss.
Gave the coach a rating which is always big plus in my eyes.

You are right Hulk, These guys would’ve gotten rid of De Winter after a couple poor games. Would have gotten rid of Nkunku after a slow start. Would’ve spent 30 plus million on a striker who needs knee surgery, brought in a couple more players who they then would want to get rid of if they have one bad performance.

This management is poor at planning for sporting success UNLESS it comes as an unintended side effect of their financial planning/success. Instantly a key player for us. We had a bad habit of falling a sleep during games but in those moments Rabiot recognizes it and tries to wake the team up by pressing high. Its such a nice thing to have a player who leads by example

I never understood why most didn’t want him at Milan, he has always been a fantastic player. He is always consistent for France and is keeping some really strong players on the France bench.
I thought he was past his best, and thought he’d be more a utility player at this point… but he took over that starting spot and ran with it. I knew he was fantastic… just thought his best years were behind him. I was clearly wrong.
It not always easy to tell which players will be a hit or miss, but thankfully Rabiot is playing really well. De Winter is showing up as well. Nkunku is scoring, finally. Ricci and Jashari could be key players down the stretch too if they both kick it up a notch.

If injuries can be avoided, Milan can push Inter to the end.
Paradoxically we have to hope for Inter to continue to advance in the Champions League and Coppa Italia. They are already 5 points ahead and our best bet is for them to continue to be involved in 3 competitions so that they face some wear and tear and drop points in Serie A; because after a shaky start, they’ve been very consistent and they’ve been repeatedly earning all 3 points in their matches.
It’s hard to root for Inter to win but for us, it is advantageous if they keep advancing in their other competitions and even reach the finals (provided that they, then, lose those finals)
I’m sure Inter will drop points along the way. They looked vulnerable in recent matches, but they have a good squad and it will be tough to chase them down. At this point, I’m hoping Milan can lock down a CL spot, then chase Inter to the finish line. Btw, I watched Juve this weekend and they looked good. Another threat, I think.

Thiaw was an elite passer of the ball out of the back. KDW is not as good there. But he’s growing a lot.
De Winter makes considerably less mistakes than Thiaw. He’s a solid defender.

Bologna is not doing too hot this season and expectedly were poor here tonight. Having said that, some players have shown progress.
Nkunku had a great game, probably his best at Milan. Athekame looks reasonably well, more importantly comfortable. KDW continues to grow into his role. But RLC is still a mystery, goal notwithstanding.
I have to reiterate that Rabiot should be the best signing of the season. What a season he’s having… All his goals have come away and continues to be clutch in midfield for us. So much so, that he mitigates other players’ shortcomings…

Rafa has been playing with chronic pain and lingering injuries, as confirmed by Allegri multiple times, including in interviews yesterday. When Rafa is healthy, he can be very decisive, as seen multiple times.
The weirdness of people on here to forget that Leao has had 8 goals this season in fewer minutes. His goal to minute ratio is actually pretty impressive.
Without him and his goals Milan would not be where they are in the table. He got a much-needed rest.
