Massimiliano Allegri and his men headed into the game with one clear target: to win the game. That became obvious early on as the performance was far from great, but at least they got the job done in the end. Now, top four feels a whole lot closer.

Short version
🥇 Nkunku (6.5 – MOTM): He wasn’t always super vigilant, but he sniffed out the danger and made the most of a poor Genoa backpass. Great penalty too, it has to be said, calmly sending the keeper the wrong way. That said, he did scuff a pretty good chance that Athekame set up, otherwise it would have been a 7.
👎 Gimenez (5): Sadly, far from good enough from him. The movement wasn’t necessarily poor, but he was way too timid on the ball (especially when he got it in the box) and also squandered a good opportunity by not being quick enough. Back passes when it didn’t make sense, etc., etc.
👔 Allegri (4.5): I agree with the starting eleven, but once again, the opponents managed to absolutely pick us apart at the back. It doesn’t matter that we created a little more in attack when the defence is so leaky. It’s been a problem for weeks now and the gaffer hasn’t found a solution.
Starting XI
Maignan (6): The goalkeeper wasn’t tested that many times, truth be told, but he did make a very good save on Ekhator right after Milan’s second goal. He couldn’t do much about the goal conceded either, with it being from such close range.
Tomori (5.5): I’m not sure what has happened to him in the last few months, but there seems to be no balance in his plays and decision-making. Some rash challenges today, poor passing and general uncertainty. Of course, there were some good moments too but not enough for a passing grade.
Gabbia (5.5): Handled the duels with the Genoa forwards pretty well in general, but he probably could have done better on the goal conceded. Yes, the touch is hard to avoid, but he could have stayed closer to Vasquez to begin with.
Pavlovic (6): Solid defending for the most part and some good runs up the pitch, as well as calm and effective decisions in the build-up. Definitely enough for him to earn a passing grade here.
Athekame (6.5): The goal ended up being super important, hence the 6.5 here, and it was a really nice strike. That said, he got lucky that Vitinha missed his big chance a little earlier as that was very poor defending. You can possibly also ask questions on the goal conceded, as his man headed it into the box.
Fofana (5.5): Very much a ‘meh’ display with not much to show for in terms of interceptions and driving forward with the ball, which is usually his strengths. He also held back with some tougher passes which is never nice to see.
Jashari (5.5): Overall I actually think he was decent, and he definitely fought hard which was needed in such a physical battle. However, that backpass which Ekhator got a hold off could have been very costly for Milan, warranting a below-par rating.
Rabiot (6): He could have been more effective with his passing in the final third, with a few ones that frankly didn’t make any sense, but he got stuck in a lot in midfield. That was important already in the first half, when his teammates seemed to be a little bit sleepy.
Bartesaghi (6): Similarly to Rabiot, it wasn’t exactly a standout performance in terms of passing and many end products, but he wasn’t afraid to take on the fight. Committed some fouls to stop Genoa’s momentum and wasn’t booked for it. Smart defending.

Substitutes
Fullkrug (6): The first part of his substitution wasn’t what mattered, but at the end when Milan defended their lead, he was instrumental in keeping the ball by the corner flag. Also combined well with Pulisic for a chance right at the death.
Ricci (5.5): Committed the foul that eventually lead to Genoa’s goal, even if it was probably right to stop the counter like that. Still, more so than that, his entrance didn’t feel like an injection of energy.
Pulisic (6): Just about got to the ball and set up Athekame’s goal with a toepoke, getting his first assist since March. Had a pretty good chance to score at the end but was denied by the keeper after a nice give and go with Fullkrug. Just shy of a 6.5 perhaps.
De Winter (5): It was too poor from him on the goal, even if you could argue that it’s scrappy at the end of the day, but I also think he was a little rash in the usual challenges. Maybe should have had a free-kick more against him in the end.
Loftus-Cheek (6): Pretty much what you would expect, providing a passing lane down the right-hand side and also some physicality in those corner flag battles. Decent indeed.
The manager
Allegri (5.5): I don’t know about this one. Yes, we got the win (and what an important win!), but the performance was pretty terrible once again. If it hadn’t been for Nkunku’s awereneess, god knows how this would have ended.
Jashari is such a bum. Hope to never see this butthead along with his dim-witted fans ever again.

We all said the same thing about CdK (me included), but we know it’s not fair for him to be judged too early. I’m excited to see him next season.
Maybe not, but the management should stop with these record braking Belgian/Dutch deals. If ~35 millions is spent, you would expect a player to perform from the get go, not a season or two later.
Then again, some players are just not suitable for Milan. I’m convinced that should De Ketelaere be brought back, he will struggle just the same.

De zerbi was literally waiting on us before his Marseille move, we need someone outside Italy, who is young and has an exciting play, anything short of this we are getting dumped out of Europe, even if it’s Conference league.

At first I was on the team “keep Allegri” if he secures the UCL spot since he was brought for this exact reason, plus the team being so bad isn’t his fault.
However, after few monthes not only we are not progressing, but actually regressing, and thus despite having a full squad and playing once a week.

Neither Allegri nor any of the coaches that came before him were properly reinforced with the players they needed. Every single mercato was a disjointed knee-jerk operation.
The difference is Allegri is actually making a soup out of sh*t ingredients. it’s an awful soup so far but a soup nonetheless. Whereas before him there was a sh*t porridge on the table. Allegri isn’t the answer moving forward, but he is what was needed this season.
He will not be coach next season. He will be blamed for not getting more out of some of these players and for the brand of football.

In a game of football where you need your opponent to slip up so you can capitalize on the mistake, Milan setup for Alegri makes sure the opponent are never under any pressure, even when they make mistakes, there’s no one to take advantage of it. The opponents can comfortably make mistakes at the back cus our pressing is trash, all thanks to Alegri ball.
If Nkunkun had not taken the initiative to press, we’d maybe not scored a single goal and inversely the opponent tries to make sure we don’t get any rhythm at all, this thing Alegri is doing isn’t football of a big club like Milan.
Regardless of position, Alegri should be gone come seasons end, we cannot compete in Europe with this football, we are even barely surviving in Seria A.

Ratings are almost irrelevant at this point. We got the 3 points, which is great, but what a horrific game. Genoa had us pinned in the first half and thank God their attack is as bad as ours. That one lucky goal ( kudos to nkuku who poached it right) kind of demoralized Genoa. Anyways, CL or not allegri gotta go. Hopefully the rumors that came out this week, furlani, moncada, tare and ibra all leave with him.

Given the recent form, it was a good result. Everyone’s darlings, Como, had their second single goal victory and Spaletti, who some want or wanted as coach, has his Juve team in 6th. Serie A is a competative league and we don’t have a great squad. The main thing is to get a UCL place then a new coach and better players.

Luka Jovic still outscores all these clowns we have in attack, and he left last summer. He would fit just right in this system, but he had to leave because of that snake Zlatan. Abate also left because of Zlatan, and he would be a good coach for Futuro, and maybe a couple of years later for first team. And Zlatan was the one that leaked Allegri’s undesired player list to the players. He has to go together with that other snake Furlani. Then we can maybe start a serious project.

I don’t think you’re remembering how useless Jovic was in a 2 man attack last season… Most of his goals came on when Fonseca and Conceicao threw the kitchen sink on up front. Hell, even Okafor scored then.
I remember, he was not useless. And to add something else, before cup semi finals with Inter, Ibrahimovic came in the locker room and insisted that Gimenez must play instead of Jovic, Conceicao insisted that Jovic plays because he was a better fit to his strategy, and Gimenez was in poor form. Ibrahimovic replied ‘if Jovic plays tonight, you are both out of the club at the end of the season’. Conceicao ignored him, played Jovic, who scored 2 goals and we won. Both Sergio and Jovic were out when season ended. I can only imagine what he did to poor Fonseca, and they were both young and solid coaches. I know this because a friend of mine works as a physio in Conceicao’s team.

The one who shouldn’t go for me is Tammy. Aside of the penalty fiasco, he seems to always have the right spirit. He knows the league well. He can also be useful in the front 2 formation. He closes in scoring 20 goals this season. But I guess his valuation along with his wage was just not feasible. So that’s that.

What’s wrong with Italian football: a player like Jashari who obviously has great drive and potential doesn’t get the chances because he makes 1 stupid mistake per game that is costly. I agree that shouldn’t happen, but that’s just football. You can’t just bench him for making mistakes with the alternative being Ricci who doesn’t make those big mistakes but offers absolutely nothing. Give the young players trust and time. But no, in Italy 1-0 is enough. I actually prefer the Netherlands mentality (where I’m from). It’s a bad competition sure, but at least young players don’t get benched for making a mistake, because they play on the offense and there’s always 4 or 5 more chances to redeem your mistakes. I feel very sorry for Jashari for having to play under such a dinosaur that rather has his team making no mistakes and having one shot on goal.
He’s playing for Milan, one of the greatest teams in history. Mistakes aren’t accepted. Poor performances aren’t expected. If you settle for mediocrity then that is what you will get!

Not sure that Gabbia couldn’t handle Colombo. Actually he won some duels against Colombo.
Jashari committed one big blunder but otherwise his accuracy passing rate was 100% (if you don’t count that blunder). Yes, I gave him less of a pass because of the blunder, but I wouldn’t say he was poor. ONE mistake. Big mistake, but the opponents didn’t score from the mistake, so ultimately the mistake was of no consequence.
Puli’s assist is not to be discounted. It’s a goal participation and it contributed to the victory, which, had we tied this game, we’d have been in a much worse position for UCL qualification. That counts.
In my post I got most players a 5.5 but forgot that Fofana indeed likely deserved even less; good point.
I don’t understand why you rated Pavlovic the same as Tomori. Pavlovic did much better and actually deserved a pass (6) in my opinion while Tomori performed poorly the whole game and got a yellow card.
Rabiot wasn’t brilliant but 5 is too low. I think ultimately, he earned a pass. Almost scored, too, late in the game.
Mike had nothing to do with their goal, and had a HUGE save in a 1 v 1 situation that preserved the win. That’s worth more than just a pass.
You are such a Pulisic hater. He got an assist, nearly had another, and just missed a goal due to the Genoa GK’s toe poke save. I guess you weren’t around when Inzaghi was playing. He made his living scoring goals by popping up, toe poking, butt goals, etc. One of the best strikers we’ve had. No Leao, no problem. You’ll follow him out of the club this summer, no doubt.

No, he shot the ball and the keeper saved it. From that angle, unless the keeper made a mistake he was never going to score. Anyone who has played would know that. A miss is not putting the ball on target. Hopefully Pulisic puts in his transfer request after the WC.

ACM1899 the point is he 100% isn’t a 40M player. He also did make mistakes twice in a row so that is worrying. He doesn’t have the technique and calmness to hold the ball in pressing situations. For the position he plays that is key. So I have to say 15M would be a good fee for him, but when he cost 40M I expect him to be ready to play 1st day.

CDK was a lemon during his (early) time with Milan. If they had given him 2-3 years, as is being recommended for Fofana, we’d now have a worthy winger in CDK. Likewise, give Fofana another couple of years and he’ll be excellent.
The question becomes, do we have patience, or will Fofana bloom under different colors?
Even if the team has no attacking plan, the last I checked he is a midfielder, how many visionary passs comes from him to any attacker, even the so call defensive play he keeps making fatal error. He is just not Milan worthy

Criticism has become the norm and an awful lot of it is fair (because whatever anyone tries to tell you, it’s ok to criticise the team you love), but today we were the better side in a poor game. Tough place to go (lucky enough to have been although it was Samp – absolutely incredible atmosphere), we needed the win, and that’s what we got.
Jashari was very good in my opinion until that absolutely criminal pass. His mistakes tend to be costly and it’s affecting the perception of him. He was very lively in the first half especially.
Pulisic looked like the player we signed. Here’s hoping he stays.
Rabiot was phenomenal again.
We conceded another shaky goal and De Winter was at the heart of it again. Have to be honest I’m not sure about him. In any case this bit of defensive frailty has come at the right time – rather now than start the season that way and have to fix it.

And somehow Milan does not commit players forward into the attack…and is leaky in defense. How is this possible? In both cases not a good endorsement for Allegri returning….which sucks because the one thing Milan could use is stability. Coaches and players primarily staying and getting better. Instead I fear a fourth coach in two years, and another major overhaul to the roster.

Simple. It’s because De Winter’s mistake did result in a goal for the opponents while Jashari’s mistake didn’t. In my longer post that disappeared, I did explain that, and said that Jashari had a rather good game with 100% accurate passing rate until that blunder; I said Jashari would have earned a pass or even a bit more, except for the blunder which put him under, but less bad than De Winter because at least from Jashari’s blunder there wasn’t a score for the opponent.
I’m fine with rating him with the same score of De Winter if you insist, but it’s not a question of favoritism; just a personal criterion I have, that mistakes that result in goals for the opponents are worse than the ones that doesn’t, even if its someone else that rescues that play and not the player who committed it. Ultimately goals matter and if there is no score for the opponent, then the mistake was of no consequence.
Where is the logic in that? So you don’t rate players based on their actions but what others did? So if someone makes a mistake and the goalkeeper saves it it is a higher rating for the keeper and same for the one making the mistake. Or nobody because it cancels itself out? Your logic is not really logical at all. If you make 5 mistakes in a game and get lucky that the opposing team didn’t capitalize on them, you still did bad and made the mistakes.
Simply, there is a difference between a mistake that costs us 3 points – such as scoring an own goal, getting a red card and tanking the team, conceding a PK, os serving the ball to an attacker that then scores, resulting in lost points, lost trophies or lost qualifications, and a mistake that bad as it could be, is of no consequence whatsoever because the opponents don’t capitalize. I can partially forgive a player for ONE mistake like the one Jashari did today but didn’t make us drop points. Otherwise he had a good game with 100% passing accuracy rate. Still I didn’t forgive him entirely. Was ready to give him a 6.5; gave him a 5.5 instead.

Sure, if someone has 5 bad mistakes, that’s a pretty bad game. Jashari however had just one.
The issue here is comparing Jashari and De Winter. Both had ONE mistake each. One player’s mistake was of no consequence whatsoever. The other one resulted in a score for the opponents so I rated the latter half a point lower.

Yes indeed you’re making a logical fallacy. It’s INDIVIDUAL ratings and what another player did with presented opportunity lay’s outside of the given INDIVIDUAL control. Jashari mistake was more glaring and avoidable and should warrant more on his rating. Even though on the otherside he should be given one more year at least to assert himself. It was obvious that he favors more instinctive and open play. Not the Alegrisourus corto muso overly cautious approach.
It’s a team sport. Teammates such as a goalkeeper can rescue a player’s mistake making it LESS COSTLY. Even though it’s individual rating, consequences matter.

When you judge a player, you should judge what HE did, not how someone else took advantage of that or not.
The fact that Jashari’s pass didn’t result in a goal against us is entierly thanks to Maignan and Genoa’s striker being bad. Therefore Jashari should get no extra point because his mistake didn’t result in a goal.
If he did catch the striker and somehow blocked the shot or distracted him, yes you can make a case for him, but that’s not what happened today.
The extra point or half point you gave to Jashari, you should give it to Maignan instead.
Hard to explain when you actually think that makes sense.
But here is a sub question for you Luigi. Do you care how Milan plays? Why? In 20 years nobody will remember anything but the results and titles. If you play amazing football but end up 5th will you remember this? It is the same “logic” you are trying to apply here. So if you wont’ remember something in the future it is irrelevant at the moment it’s happening as well? Right? So winning 1-0 every game and not trying to score more is perfectly fine, since you won’t remember it anyway in 20 years.
Unfortunately I have to disagree with you. The individual capacity to make mistakes needs to be calculated into a rating regardless of the outcome of that mistake. If someone constantly makes mistakes but is bailed out often by his teammates can’t have a higher rating than others. See Estupinan, Emerson Royal.

I am tired of an offense that is predicated on the other team making a mistake. So, late in the game Genoa opens up, but if that mistake didn’t happen it would be a different game. You can’t have an effective offense that consistently scores if the strategy is waiting for a mistake.
Good time for Nkunku to be raising his hand. Would not mind if they keep him as an impact player off the bench…provided we get decent strikers up front…Jash needs time, every player in this team has been guilty of a mistake or two, amd sometimes game defining mistakes. My patience is wearing thin with Tomori, by now should be the Kjaer type player but he is just regressing with everybody else. Literally astounds me how many people can’t reason past “Allegri this…” and “Allegri that…” completely ignoring what he is having to work with.
Allegri is not faultless in all of this. He hasn’t shown attacking patterns of play nor any progress in developing players. But who brought him here without reinforcing? Where did the decision come from to entrust this disjointed team full of holes to a man that isn’t known to build? It’s a miracle that this defense has come together not to allow more goals in than it has. And I maintain he has far over-performed this season despite Tare’s and Furlani’s idiocy.
Barring a complete and next-level meltdown next game, he will have brought us back to CL. I’d say the man deserves our gratitude given the circumstances. Having said that, Milan should absolutely NOT continue with him next season unless they properly reinforce him. Allegri will not build anything – he will only manage.

Indeed, they didn’t give Allegri a squad suitable for his playing style. They spent 40+ mln on Nkunku, a player with high potential but who is not suitable for Allegri’s tactics. Leao is not a second striker. Instead of spending 30 mln on a bench option, Jashari, they could have spent it on a good CB. In the end the cycle will repeat itself and the management will find scapegoats to redirect blame from themselves.

I honestly have no problem with any particular formation. My problem is with a coach who says “I am playing x formation because that’s what I do”. I said a few times earlier in the season that Milan needed Allegri for one season so he could rebulid an actual team. I was wrong. I fully believe that he almost intentionally threw away 3 points vs Udinese by putting a poor lineup on the field just so he could say that he tried to change and it failed so he was right all along. The team has completely fallen apart since that game.
You can make excuses that it’s management’s fault (and they definitely deserve a huge share of the blame) but any coach who plays one style, regardless of who is available is stubborn and incompetent.
You could have every single player you want, hand-picked top to bottom. Unless you are the luckiest manager in the world, the team you start the season with is almost never the team you have throughout the season. You will have injuries, players who can’t keep it in their pants and tank their best season (I’m done defending Puli), and you will have players that just have bad luck or a run of bad form. You have to be willing and able to modify your approach to fit the personnel available or you will fail.

But I DID penalize Jashari for his blunder. I lowered his score by one full point. I was about to give him a 6.5, as up to that point of his ONE blunder, he had posted 100% of passing accuracy.
I simply penalized De Winter even more because HIS blunder resulted in a goal for the opponents. It happened right inside the small box with no chance of recovery. Jashari’s instead was farther away, and it was then possible for Maignan to rescue him. Thus, it was a less damaging mistake.

When Musah gets a silly red card, tanks the team, and the team is then eliminated from the Champions League, that is PRETTY BAD and both fans and professional journalists penalized him with a very low score. Like 2 or 3. He almost single-handedly took the team out of the competition.
When someone loses the ball, but nothing happens and there is no opponent score and NO CONSEQUENCCES, evidently, it’s a less damaging mistake, thus the lighter penalty in ratings for that player, although a penalty was STILL applied. Again, many professional journalists take the consequences into account.
This is not rocket science. It’s actually pretty simple.
If you guys have a different criterion, fine. Use your own criterion at will, and post your own ratings. I’ll disagree but I will respect the way you do it.
