AC Milan are thinking about making Massimiliano Allegri their next head coach, but a report has questioned how much he can actually build around.
As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) reports this morning, the Milan leadership – while waiting for the addition of a new sporting director – are thinking about bringing Allegri back to the club 12 years after he departed. He is even the ‘number one candidate’.
While the team currently might not be a perfect fit for Allegri, with a limited number of changes to the squad it can be. After all, the big transfer campaigns that took place in the Gerry Cardinale era brought players he would happily use.
Some examples? Christian Pulisic has shown himself to be a complete player, who in the 4-2-3-1 can occupy all three roles behind the centre forward, and who is capable of scoring and providing assists.
It’s easy to imagine that he would remain a fixed point for Milan just like Tijjani Reijnders, a midfielder with good feet like Miralem Pjanic who Allegri had with the Old Lady. Youssouf Fofana’s work rate and physicality would also be of use.
In defence, Kyle Walker would become irreplaceable, a winner and a leader of those he loves (his permanent signing from Manchester City is a given), and Strahinja Pavlovic could be very useful as well with his aggressiveness.
For the centre-forward role, trust in Santiago Gimenez would remain as he has the characteristics of a penalty area striker, which Max wants. Granted, the Mexican must demonstrate that he is ready for Serie A after his excellent numbers in Holland his positive start.
Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Warren Bondo and Malick Thiaw could easily be part of Allegri’s new Milan, even if the feeling is that a new central defender would arrive. Alex Jimenez and Francesco Camarda could get more playing time too.
Two of the main issues to be resolved are related to Theo Hernandez and Rafael Leao. Theo’s exit, without a renewal, is a given regardless of Allegri’s opinion. After a season like the current one, it is difficult to imagine the Frenchman staying.

The situation is more fluid for Leao, who could be very appealing to Max due to his athleticism, acceleration and dribbling. He too would have to live with the Portuguese’s questionable defensive work rate, but he has coached players like Cristiano Ronaldo so would take on the challenge.
Mike Maignan is also in doubt, having made many mistakes so far this season, but he has the kind of character and personality that Allegri might like. The final question: will an agreement be found with Roma to make the exchange with Alexis Saelemaekers permanent? He would appeal to the Italian.
What might the transfer window look like? Allegri is likely to want a new starting left-back if Theo leaves, another central midfielder with more physicality and also another striker to rotate with Gimenez.
We have to style, no clear philosophy.
Let’s hire Allegri 🤦♂️
Coach isn’t the problem… management is…
we tried with 4 coaches, blamed 3 but both the futuro and the main squad is still under performing (9th place in Serie A and getting relegated in Serie C is a disaster).
Hire Maldini, listen to what he has to say, bring in 2 more of his choosing so he can have a team he can work with… that was the Scudetto scenario, now we are going back to banter era…
Abate, Pioli (I would agree was about time, but still), and Fonseca
Tonali seems to be forcing his way back to Milan and I have a strange feeling that if Allegri arrives so will Tonali.
The players likely to leave a Maignan, Theo, Chukwueze, Okafor, RLC , Salaemakers, Florenzi, Pobega, and Tomori.
Players like to come in are Tonali, Fabbian, Milinkovic-Savic, Calafiori – yes Arsenal is looking to move him out, Zeghrova to replace Chukwueze and Leece or Udinese striker.
I haven’t read anything about Arsenal getting rid of Calafiori. Tonali is enjoying his time in Newcastle, and yeah he said in a interview he would probably coming back to Italy. Most probably after his contract runs out
Is this goofball really Milan’s #1 choice or are the papers making up sh*t again?
You know
I’m at a loss honestly…. Can’t believe we’re doing a full circle back to Max…
We’ve reached the point in this hell that I’m actually starting to be fine with Allegri. I hate the guy and REALLY wanted him gone before he was fired but the absolutely ridiculous sh1tstorm we’re in means I’m desperate for a change.
Not that any coach in the world could be enough to save the club from the mess it’s in but still… Better than Giampaolo 2.0
Milan’s decline began with this guy, which was stopped after a full 7 years. The man who chased away Pirlo. The man who Berlusconi said he doesn’t understand anything. The man who worked at Juventus for 7 million. Well done 🥂
Exactly! Everyone forgets he said Pirlo was washed when his contract expired.
Spot on – not to mention left Inzaghi out the CL squad and treated all the senators like cr@p. I thought good riddance then and I still think good riddance now..
There’s a reason why no one else hires Allegri except Juve in error. Before everyone says he won league 5 times with Juve, they won off the back of Conte’s work just like Inter ate now with Inzaghi. Allegri’s teams play slow, boring and defeatist mentality football. Dod no one watch his Juve teams play. There’s more chance of hell freezing over than him giving youth a chance. He’ll keep on playing the older slower players whilst the game is getting faster.
Allegri is one of the most overrated coaches in Italian football. The only reason he had success with juve was because there was zero competition in serie a at the time.
Nesta himself said that when we won the scudetto under Allegri we played with no tactics whatsoever. So now these clowns want to bring him back. No wonder we are where we are
There is nothing wrong with no tactics. It’s about the mindset. Allegri brings a winning mindset. Players play confidently under him.
The ex-Juve manager you need is Conte. Allegri only works when you have a group of good senior players in their prime (or close to the end of it) who have won significant trophies.
If you need to begin a cycle of winning, Conte is who you bring in
Allegri LOL….we are truly LOST
Truth is doesn’t matter who coaches – same trash will happen. NOTHING changes unless Ownership and
Management are changed
This is SYSTEMIC and it starts from the TOP and rolls downhill
100%
Coaching Ronaldo and coaching Leao is a very bad comparison. Ronaldo has an EXTREME work rate where he is not afraid to take risks and eat dirt now and then. Ronaldo needs no coaching which is why coaches end up relying on him wherever he plays. On the other hand, Leao has a finicky primadonna work rate where he gets upset and pouts instead of keeps running. He is afraid to take risks and possibly fail in front of a crowd.
They are completely different players for a coach to work with.
I was just going to say that! Comparing Ronaldo who is a winner and very hard worker to Leao who is lazy and doesn’t really care much about Milan. Leao will never be great if he doesn’t change his ways.
Milan should have hired Conte and we would be sitting top of the table – instead they went with a cheap option which failed, then replaced Fonseca with another Portuguese coach and now are thinking to replace him too. They will keep doing it until someone realizes that the coach is not the problem, it’s the management.
Moncada is in love with French players, Furlani is useless, Scaroni I don’t even know what he does and of course Ibra, who talks big game but has zero clue what he is doing. Ultimately the fault falls on Cardinale as he is the only who hires then all.
People may not understand how bad this would be. I know things are bad right now but we’d see things like Musah playing behind 2 strikers and Pobega returning as a starter if Allegri came back. Awful, awful coach
bring Gasp + his SD + his scouting staff,
we’ll have young, attacking w/ lot Italian squad
Please for the love of god no
If there is a revolution it should be done with de zerb if allegri is coming i would rather have pioli back than allegri. Allegri style of play is boring and i think he would just make things worse he has nothing new to add in football as we have seen in juventus he does not change same thing all the time.
Hell NO to Massimilliano Allergy. Give Conceicao time to build his team against next season.
Build around Italian please. Coach isn’t the problem. The management is the main problem. They used moneyball to buy player only to suck money when sell it
