Pochettino expresses satisfaction with Musah after first USA game: “Try to help him”

After his first game in charge of the United States National Team, Mauricio Pochettino has commented on Yunus Musah’s performance, and his belief that he can change the attitude of the AC Milan midfielder.

When Musah arrived last summer, many expected the American midfielder to be a rotation option, and for the most part he has played that role. However, this season, his minutes have been much more infrequent.

The American is certainly a ‘unicorn player’ in the sense that he can fill in several roles, and in his career so far, he has done exactly that. In Spain, his minutes were largely as a winger, but he has been more centrally-focused in the more recent parts of his career.

With a lack of minutes in Italy this season, seeing Pochettino select him was welcomed, and for his faith to be repaid early on was fantastic. When speaking to ESPN, the Argentine offered some words on the midfielder, and his words have been relayed by Milan News.

“[It is] Fantastic for him, fantastic for the team, and now maybe he will start to behave in a different way, where he can be full of confidence. That’s the important thing in our decision, to try to help him.”

  1. Pochettino used Musah as a RWB in a 3421 formation with Pulisic playing in the front 2 behind the striker.

In my humble opinion this formation would also work including a 343 at Milan. Theo is not a good defender. He’s more of a wingback.

With Pavlovic, Gabbia and Tomori in defense we would have more balance because Pavlovic and Tomori are very fast and they are good at pressing.

This formation would certainly free Theo and give him more space to attack.

      1. I’ve been calling for this for a 3-4-3 for weeks, I agree that it would be best for our squad (and offer some defensive solidity).

I disagree that we have no depth – Emerson can play RCB, Theo can fill in at RCB (after he played CB last season), and we still have Thiaw and the Futuro lads for depth (which may well be a good way to bed them in anyway since they would have more cover)
