Porto president reveals Milan only made ‘ridiculous offers’ for Taremi

By Isak Möller -

Mehdi Taremi to AC Milan was the never-ending mercato saga in the summer. Despite the lengthy negotiations, however, the Iranian international ended up staying at Porto and their president has now revealed some background.

One of the priorities for Milan was to sign a striker to offload some responsibility from Olivier Giroud, who turned 37 in October. As the negotiations with Taremi failed, they ended up with Luka Jovic and the result hasn’t exactly been positive.

Speaking to SIC, as cited by SportMediaset, Porto president Pinto da Costa shared his thoughts on Milan’s interest and what happened in the summer. According to him, the Rossoneri never came close to the valuation of the release clause.

“For Taremi, Milan only made ridiculous offers and there wasn’t even a discussion. None of their offers came close to the value of the clause,” he stated.

The Rossoneri have certainly paid for the lack of a proper backup striker this season and it remains to be seen if Jovic can find his first goal. The Serbian is expected to start against Fiorentina on Saturday, and it could be one of his last chances to convince the Milan management.

  1. honestly there is no lack of striker. Thats is not the problem Milan has. When you lead 2-0 and then it ends up 2-2 that is not a problem of the attacking department. If you look at all Milan matches so far they only failed to score in 2 games in serie a. Udine and Juve. udine was a pioli blunder and juve was a thiaw blunder.

    1. We have no lack of striker???????

Sorry but not sure which games you are watching. You can cherry pick one or two games here and there but it’s about the overall season. We fail to consistently score goals. Yes our D is also an issue – BOTH are. So YES we do have a striker problem. We are relying on a 37yr old to play every 3 days. That is a huge problem and one that should have been addressed last summer.

Re: Taremi no matter what his value is/was – the fact we low-balled when we were in desperate need of a striker because we waited till the last min to secure on when many other targets were available – is telling of either how incompetent management was OR inexperienced management was in securing a deal and understanding the importance of the position. So instead we panicked last second and took the only player available that nobody wanted – Jovic. Not good

    1. You folks don’t understand Porto’s situation. Taremi is their top striker. They are in the champions league. They are going to battle for the portuguese championship, which leads to next year’s champions league. They will make more than 10 million dollars just by qualifying for the champions league next year. They will make more than 10 million dollars by advancing from group stage this year. Keeping Taremi for this season makes a lot of sense, even if he leaves Porto for free.
