Portuguese paper Record on €16.5m compensation scandal: “The truth about Leao”

Portuguese newspaper Record have shed some light on the situation which has seen Rafael Leao ordered to pay Sporting CP over €16m in compensation.

The newspaper recalls how Leao was one of a number of players who departed the Lisbon club in the summer of 2018, joining Lille having ripped up his contract after players and staff were assaulted by fans at the club’s training ground.

A year later he made a big-money move to AC Milan and it was then revealed that Sporting – where he came through the academy – were not happy about the situation as they feel they were robbed of a transfer fee.

They took the matter to FIFA and asked for damages equal to €45million, a request which was rejected by the governing body, but it was then confirmed that Leao has been ordered to pay €16.5m in compensation to his old club.

The report reveals how the twist came from the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland which overturned everything about two weeks ago. “Rafael Leao, the whole truth” is the title of the newspaper, for which the scan of the front page comes from MilanNews.
