Pre-season and mercato key factors Pioli ponders formation change

Stefano Pioli has always relied on the 4-2-3-1 formation since he joined AC Milan but things could change for the upcoming season. In fact, looking at where the Rossoneri are headed, the manager could use the 4-3-3 instead.

Milan have signed Marco Sportiello, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Luka Romero and Christian Pulisic thus far. The Englishman thrives in a three-man midfield and the latter two are both wingers, which is a big hint.

Not to mention the fact that the Rossoneri still intend to sign another right-winger before the window closes, as well as two more midfielders. Therefore, the attacking midfield role – or the No.10 if you like – doesn’t appear to be that useful.

The pre-season will obviously be crucial as Pioli will get to see the new signings in action. For those games, he will be able to test different solutions and it remains to be seen which will come out on top.

Furthermore, the outcome of the mercato will also decide the approach, but now everything points towards the 4-3-3 formation.
