Athletic: Pulisic sustains ‘bone bruise and microfracture’ – his estimated recovery time

After he limped off during the USA’s World Cup exit to Belgium, the nature of Christian Pulisic’s issue has now become clear.

According to The Athletic, Pulisic ‘suffered a bone bruise and microfracture in his leg’ during Monday’s loss. Despite the serious-sounding nature of the injury, it is claimed that he ‘will be sidelined for several weeks but not months’.

The issue came in the 52nd minute of the USA’s eventual 4-1 defeat to the Red Devils, and occurred when Pulisic pulled back to take a shot but only connected with opposing midfielder Youri Tielemans’ calf.

He tried to play on but was unable to do so. “I just totally twisted my ankle and my knee in one play,” he said after the match. It was immediately a cause for concern, especially with the knee and ankle involved, however it seems worst-case scenario has been fully avoided.

The report from The Athletic adds: “The estimated timeframe for Pulisic’s recovery puts him on track to return sometime in August, meaning he could be back in training ahead of the new Serie A season – AC Milan get their campaign underway away at Torino on August 23.”

Ruben Amorim will hope to be able to work with the former Chelsea and Dortmund man as soon as possible, given he has already reportedly declared him to be a big part of his plans for the future.

  1. At the start of the WC I predicted that Puli would struggle in the WC. It seemed he started off well but his injury significantly diminished his performance and his confidence never came back. I see a lot of pundits in the US being critical of his overall performance.
    A couple of things:
    1. Milan can see that potentially his performance did not raise his stock significantly for other teams to come rushing to buy him
    2. This injury is another physical setback that will take time and set him back again to return to the leves we say in Fall 2025.
    3. Fall 2026 will ultimately be telling if Pulisic can bounce back. I worry that this WC performance, the injury, and his low confidence has hindered him significantly and we may see his best days behind him.

I hope he turns a page to a disappointing past 7 months and he can restart in September

    1. Basically, I don’t see anyone coming after Pulisic this
Mercato, so in a way we are lucky that no one is trying to come take him from us regardless of Cardinale already has said he is untouchable. If he had a crazy WC run and was among MVPs of this tournament you
Know teams would be proposing high $$$ that eventually this management would take for profit. But that’s not the case so we can expect him for one more season. If that’s ultimately good vs bad. We will see

      1. He couldn’t have an extraordinary WC because it’s a team sport and I believe the US team already exceeded the expectations.

He will be the last man sold from the current team also because of politics. He is still regarded as the best US player and guess what that means to Gerry and his desire to extend the market share of Milan. Even if he single-handedly won the World cup, it would mean a huge boost of the Milan brand by association.

  2. Why wouldn’t you kick Pulisic all game long until the cards come out? He has not proven he can sustain the punishment without getting injured, and he tends to perform MUCH worse when he is carrying a knock.

    1. We need him but he is becoming a liability….don’t get me wrong, he is getting injured more often. If there is an option to cash out, we should take it. Just my opinion…

      1. I think he’s playing too often. Under Pioli he hardly got injured and that was because Pioli load-managed him. At the 70 min mark he was always taken off. I believe this helped him alot with inquiries. Otherwise he become quite susceptible. He’s splendid when fit though
