Adrien Rabiot’s willingness to sign for AC Milan was proved yesterday, with him taking a financial hit to join the Rossoneri.
There have been discussions all summer about Rabiot and the potential of him joining Milan. However, things only began to look possible in the final week of the mercato, and a deal was agreed on deadline day.

Rabiot’s hit
There were two issues with a potential move. Firstly, Marseille did not really want to part with the midfielder. Then, arguably more importantly, some financial hurdles needed to be overcome. Though, they were.
As Gazzetta dello Sport writes, the Frenchman was due a 30% fee, which would have been split with his mother and agent Veronique. However, the duo opted to waive half of this payment, instead only receiving 15% between them, as MilanNews relays.
This action in itself secured the move to Italy and confirmed very heavily that his desire was the Rossoneri and to work with Massimiliano Allegri once again. Something which will only impress the fanbase.
Though it will also be a massive tick for the management, given they have seen that the player’s desire is for the club, working the best situation for all parties, rather than just himself and his agent.
Agent shouldn’t receive any of such fees from the club. A player should be paying for their services from his own pocket.
Yes. This needs to happen. It would solve many problems.
There was talk about UEFA implementing a 10% max agent fees of deals but not sure if that is still in the plans or if it has been put to a hault or if it has ended up in the courts of EU.
Anyways I fully agree it shouldn’t be the clubs jobs to pay for agent commissions but in the end it would probably just mean that the players would demand more. I would even go as far as there should be rules for max transfer fees and max salaries as the clubs is milked by players. Those rules should be universal and not region restricted.
What bothers me is that whereas agent fees percentages are principally, reprehensible.
Modern football demands for agent fees percentages to be unlimited as this creates disloyalty and with out disloyalty and the yearning for financial gain, the projects of ManC and PSG would not have been able accelerate their ambitions and grab the players they needed.
The Premier League would not be in their high status if it was not agents who took all the best players there.
We have in occasion benefited from it but it is football reality and can’t be stopped it but in the context of this article it was a big sacrifice by Adrian and Mama Rabiot (although they only agreed when Napoli said they were not interested any longer), but to put anything ahead of money for footballers these days is extremely rare
I agree its definitely used as a tool to expedite moves.
That and FFP. I’m sure if leagues had equal advertisement deals and means a lot of players would not choose to play in England. One + England has is the universal language as its one of those languages that a majority of people understands so it can make the move more simple.
I don’t complain about Adrien or Veronique here as they should be commended for that choice. Overall though I find all these commissions deplorable and should be fought one way or the other.
Further proof that Rabiot will be a guaranteed starter. Modric will be as well. So RLC, Fofana, Italian talent Ricci and 35M two month saga man Jashari, will fight for the last spot in central midfield.
Well let’s be real here outside of Ricci, Rabiot is better than all of them by FAR so let them fight. By the end of the season it will either be Ricci playing as the Mezzala or Regista depending on if Modric signs for another year.
Maybe, but I’m nervous given our history of mismanaging talent, and Allegri’s history of preferring grandpas. Ricci is 24 and needs to play. Jashari is 23, Belgian league MVP, “best player Brugge has ever had”, 35M spent and two months of drama, and needs to play (when healthy). These players could be just as good as Rabiot, but they will languish if they spend time on the bench because Allegri prefers to play grandpas and RLC. I hope everything works out well, but I’ve grown extremely pessimistic over the last three seasons.
If players dealt with this fee, they would just demand more from clubs. At least this way it’s not affecting the wage bill (I don’t think).
Agree that there needs to be limits in place but they should be on clubs earning potential, not wages etc. Given clubs’ revenues, players wages are actually fair, given they are the reason clubs generate such huge turnover in the first place. If you cap ticket/shirt/tv package prices, everything else would have to come down in line with the reduced revenue. Would never happen, but that’s the solution.
All football players are being trained and pampered by clubs which means huge investments on the clubs behalfs. The great majority of players are expendables and someone else could have taken their place in that process. Clubs has completely different expenditures than players will have so I disagree here. Basically players wages and sign on demands are contributing to normal working people to have to pay more and more each year. Football is the peoples sport and that is slowly but steady changing via exorbitant ticket prices, shirts, tv subscriptions etc.
Then there are the very few players that can demand exorbitant wages as they represent a special brand but quite frankly it should only be a minority in my view.

Pretty sure he would have renewed at Marseille had that fight not happened. And the reports indicate his mother shopped him around EVERYWHERE before realizing that Milan was the only option. So Rabiot only came here because he literally had no other options closer to the salary he wanted.
Not exactly comforting. But hey, if he plays all the same it won’t matter.
