GdS: ‘Ready for the islands’ – Rangnick tempted by Milan despite Austria fan pressure

Ralf Rangnick continues to hold talks with AC Milan, but in the meantime Austria fans want him to remain at the helm.

La Gazzetta dello Sport recall how Rangnick responded to reporters after the national team’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Tunisia, which they won 1-0 despite a first-half red card: “It’s no secret that I’m very happy with Austria.”

A decision to make

Austria leave for the United States on Thursday, and Rangnick continues his usual approach, the same as in recent days: he doesn’t want to talk about Milan and refers only to his relationship with the Austrian Football Association.

The situation, however, is a bit more complex than that. If he were 100% convinced of continuing as Austria coach, he would have already signed the contract extension with double his salary. That proposal has been on the table for months, remaining without any ink on it.

Rangnick met with Milan last week and could soon speak again with Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. RedBird’s idea – giving him the keys to the sporting side – certainly intrigues him.

It would be another major challenge in a long career spent entirely between Germany and Austria, with the exception of his time at Manchester United. We’ll find out a lot in the next few days and over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the fans in Vienna have spoken out. Under the stands at the Ernst Happel Stadion during Austria-Tunisia, a red and white banner was clearly visible: “Ralf, with you ready for the islands #Euro2028.”

The islands are the British Isles, Great Britain and Ireland, which will host the European Championship finals in two years. It’s an invitation to stay for another two years. Rangnick will think it over for a while and will give a response to the Austrian federation by the end of the week.
