Player Ratings: Inter 1-0 AC Milan – Messias experiment fails; Giroud poor

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan failed to break their negative trend after a disastrous first half in the Derby della Madonnina against Inter, resulting in the game-winning goal. Down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI

Tatarusanu (6): It should have been 1-0 Inter after just six minutes but the goalkeeper made a brilliant save on Lautaro Martinez. He also had a few other decent stops, thus getting a pass ratings-wise.

Kalulu (5.5): He had a rocky start, just like the rest of his defensive teammates, as they struggled to keep hold of the Inter players. He improved as the game went on and it wasn’t a complete disaster from him.

Kjaer (4.5): From an experienced player like him, Milan really need more. He made the fatal mistake on the corner that resulted in Inter’s goal and that was a shame, because otherwise he did okay.

Gabbia (5.5): Just like Kalulu, a troublesome start amid Inter’s dominance but he grew in the second half and ended up winning many duels.

Calabria (4): The captain needs to do a lot better. Even when he looked to be in the right position, he failed to cut out passes and his attacking contribution was zero.

Messias (3.5): If he was Pioli’s big tactical solution, then I don’t know what to say. He barely touched the ball and when he did, he didn’t do anything with it.

Tonali (4.5): It was a tough evening for the midfielder and he didn’t look himself at all. It improved a little in the second half, with a few good balls won, hence the rating.

Krunic (4.5): Just like Tonali, the start to the game was quite rough and the midfield presence was lacking. He improved with his passing in the second half, taking on a better position but still not good enough.

Hernandez (5.5): It was tough for him to do anything with Inter bursting down the flanks every single attack. However, he was one of the positive notes when Milan did manage to go forward, we just didn’t see enough of it.

Origi (4): A rough night for the Belgian, whose impact was more or less non-existent. He tried to involve himself, though, but Inter just dominated the game too well.

Giroud (4): From derby hero to zero. He lost most of his duels with the defenders and also had Milan’s best chance of the game, but a wicked first touch let him down.

Substitutes

Diaz (5.5): His entrance at least allowed Milan to play in between the lines and that helped create some initial momentum.

Leao (6): He definitely should have started this game, anyone claiming otherwise is lying. He created Milan’s best chance of the game and also helped us get some momentum.

Saelemaekers (5): A few good actions mixed with some less fortunate ones. Not terrible though.

Thiaw (5.5): He did well off the bench and could probably get a start soon.

Rebic (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

    1. I really do think pioli has lost the dressing room I think it’s time for change. But still these players are not good enough to play for ac milan. God no’s what crap we here from pioli now.

  1. Pioli keeps playing the wrong players in the so-called system and the chance’s of failure is always higher than that of success.
I don’t know what he is thinking but this would have been a good time to play Adli and Pobega, I don’t know if Adli is handicapped that he isn’t ready with a season almost going by. Pioli must leave his bias behind if this team must succeed.

    Forza Milan

    1. Pioli fails again !
Pioli has no idea just like when he was at Inter and they sacked him

He is at Milan and last season was a surprise maybe a little lucky
It’s time for him to go, honestly leaving Leao on the bench waiting for Inter to dominate the game, well done
      Time is over Pioli

  2. What the hell is going on with the summer transfer players? Does Pioli trust anyone that those who started coaching Milan with? It takes a special genius to start Leao on the bench and hope messias to do a better job. Someone needs to knock some sense into him and stops the craziness

  3. I don’t know what Messias does in training, but the way Pioli keeps playing him, even on the position where we still have other natural choices, is just a mystery.

    1. It’s funny because when messias plays I say wow he’s bad, saelemaekers can do better and vice versa. Truth is they’re both so bad and we missed out so badly on zaniolo, ziyech, whoever to replace them. It makes me sick seeing saelemaekers play. At least messias knows he screws up and tries, whereas saelemaekers is screaming and talking back to his teammates knowing full well he screwed up. He also has this face and walk to him that he’s too cool or something when he’s probably the worst on the team

  4. “He definitely should have started this game, anyone claiming otherwise is lying.” Agree to disagree. Aside from the nice run and pass to Giroud who should have scored, he didn’t really add anything to the match. Your ratings seem all over the place. Tatarasanu made a few nice saves but at least twice his defence yelled at him asking him why he didn’t come out and claim the ball. Yet you gave him the highest rating alongside Leao. I actually thought Krunic was one of the better players for Milan. Tactically, Giroud and Origi were far too isolated and can hardly be blamed for that. The effort was there and they did as much as they could do always outnumbered by Inter defenders. I guess all I am saying is that context is important when coming out with ratings and one play does not justify a high or low score if it was the outlier of their general play. Tactics is what let the team down this game and I cannot really blame Pioli for that either as it takes a while to get acclimated to a new formation and new roles. It didn’t work well this time but I don’t think they should completely abandon the 3-5-2 at this point. I will wrap up this lengthy post by saying I was incredibly impressed with Thiaw today and feel he should get more opportunities with his combination of speed and strength.

    1. “Aside from the nice run and pass to Giroud who should have scored, he didn’t really add anything to the match.”

You mean aside from the only move in 90 minutes where we had a clear-cut chance to score, he didn’t do anything and he should be benched.

Yeah makes sense. Let’s keep playing others who can’t do that. Are you people listening to yourselves?

I don’t care if he strolls around. Fact is he played 35 minutes, in that time, he made our only chance of the game. He almost always is the one to score or assist for us. He has his flaws, but you people are out of your minds if you want him out of the pitch in this Milan team.

      1. I wasn’t criticising him, merely the rating. One play and nothing else hardly warrants a rating of 6. Regardless of one’s opinion of him, surely we should all agree on that?

      2. I mean, sure, but that’s not what you said initially.

“He definitely should have started this game, anyone claiming otherwise is lying.” Agree to disagree.

This means you disagree with the sentence, which is stating he should’ve started the match.

        1. Ah yes. There is definitely room to debate whether he should have started or not. Like I said, aside from one run, he added little more to the game (as did many of his teammates in all fairness) so you can hardly claim he must have started. In fact, I find Leao far more effective off the bench when the opposition tires. This gives him a further advantage given his speed and dribbling ability. I may question Pioli’s other decisions but have no problems with Pioli using Leao this way.

    2. I think Tata was our best player unfortunately. His first save against Lautaro is reeeally good. Without that save we would get another 5-0 in thae benifdd I agree he sucks in almost every other aspect of being a goalkeeper. And usually he sucks at keeping balls out of the net too. Worst today was ansolutely Giroud

      1. I could think of a few others who deserve nomination as well. I just think the unfamiliarity with the formation was the issue. No pressing at all in the first half let ibter do whatever they wanted.

    3. You comment is well thought out, but I disagree with the continuance of the 3-5-2. It was a disaster. We played better after Diaz came on at the half and played in the hole as is more normal for us, and then much better after Leao came on and we basically reverted back to the 4-2-3-1. I agree that Leao didn’t “crush” it, but he also didn’t see much of the ball, and as you pointed out, one of the few times he did he created a chance that Giroud should have finished and we might have been talking about a draw. Instead of the 3-5-2, which is a radical departure from our prior tactics and benches our best player, I think he should try a classic 4-3-3 or a 4-1-2-3 with a deep lying mid, which will provide cover to the defense, still unlock Theo, and not block Leao.

      1. I should clarify that I don’t necessarily advocate for a 3-5-2 but rather am suggesting that whatever formation and tactical change Pioli makes should be adopted for a few matches before being properly assessed. The change between 3-5-2 and 4-2-3-1 in the 2nd half was night and day, no doubt about that. I would imagine that would be the case given the player’s comfort with that system. Unfamiliarity with a new system takes a while to overcome is the main point I was trying to make.

        1. I agree with this. And I was surprised that he chose the derby to try out a completely new tactical system. So if he wants to change then he can go ahead and do so, and do so over the course of a few games so the changes can be properly evaluated as you said, but not to the 3-5-2. We have a multi-headed problem in Leao and benching him is going to make things worse, never mind that we don’t have the right group of CBs to play with three at the back.

  5. No back up plan. This team was built on
4 2 3 1, and when the team lost its depth, everything falls apart.

Pioli did good change. It is still mentally better to lose 1 0, against 4 0, 3 0 and 5 2.
    Giroud, missed equaliser… big unluck.

But it is obvious that players does not fight as before.

Still there is time. Statistical Milan needs around 70 points to reach fourth position.

But either way, after this season, many players should leave. Pioli should leave also if he drop Champions League. And
investments from new owner are MUST.

  6. Good bye champion league. Giroud is old but have young fighting spirit to fight and get the ball. Younger player should more spirit to get the ball. Why every game is like “the wrong player at the wrong position and at the wrong time”. Always waste each set piece, why we not training set piece.

  7. Pioli’s approach was the right one this time. He planned to not concede in the first half and hit them in the second when they became tired, which almost worked. They only scored on a set-piece, which is our undoing for three years now. But his mistakes were changing the formation (confused the players) and benching our best player (Leao).

He should’ve took this approach a few matches ago as to not concede so many goals and build some confidence before this match, but he made mistakes and Milan conceded so many goals trying to attack and leaving huge gaps at the back. What he didn’t understand is when nothing seems to work you need to get back to basics. It was already too late for this match and the confidence was at rock bottom.

Anyways, this was a step in the right direction, a baby step though. We had a chance to come out with something on Leao’s assist, but Giroud… I don’t what he did there.

For the next matches, we need to play with our usual line-up (4-2-3-1), with our best players on the pitch (Leao), but taking a defensive approach and trying to hit teams on the counter until we get our confidence back.

    1. Excellent written, like from mine head. Finally someone who understand.

Unfortunately Giroud missed sitter, and still we have some players who don’t give more power.

I agree with next match, Pioli should counter attack with 4 2 3 1, each point is valuable.

And when Maignan returns, we hope no other injuries, and than he can rotate players regularly and plays freely.

    2. Great post.

      Agree with all that.

We really need to get out of this downturn or else I fear we’ll back where we were when Pioli took over.

Also at both Lazio and Inter Pioli had strong starts (not as strong or as long as his start at Milan) but eventually lost it and was sacked. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same happens now.

Another few defeats and we could well be looking at a new manager which would undo so much of this project. I really hope we can turn it around and soon.

    3. Thank you, some welcome sanity among the angry mob’s yelling. We’re in a bad spot for objective reasons, primarily squad-related. We have weaknesses that are being exploited. There is no silver bullet. We need to pick ourselves up, start earning some points, hope to squeeze into the top four, and figure things out in the summer.

    4. Pioli’s approach was right ??? So you enjoyed the humiliation we suffered, not even going near Inter’s net in the first period.

  8. Tonali was the worst player on the pitch with the possible exception of Calabria. Hard to tell which team he was even playing for. Every time he got the ball he kicked straight to Inter. Until Pioli gets the nerve to bench the Italian players nothing is going to change. As long as Milan think Tonali is the answer in midfield they are going to bad for a long time.

    1. Thank God finally somebody noticed this fake Pirlo (Tonali) . Kessie was covering him up in the last 2 seasons. Now his true potential just got exposed. He has the lowest football IQ in whole serie A. If you watch him carefully, whenever he gets the ball. He just doesn’t want to work, simply kicks the ball away (like a lottery) to master Hoogway (Giroud). Literally stupid. Have you ever seen Barella kicking the ball away randomly. Never! He does all the hard work and never loses a ball. Calabria and Tonali should actually play for Cromonese or Spezia. Look at the signings we made. Instead of finding a replacement to Kessie, we signed 21 years old rookie. Instead of getting proven talent Dybala for free and giving him that 4-4.5 mil € salary. We got a striker who spent his whole career on bench and in injury prone Liverpool guy. In the last 2 seasons, our right side is dead and Dybala could well fit perfectly. He could actually become more useful than CDK, Origi Messias combined. Plus as a joke maldini seriously tried ‘buy’ another ambulance employee from Roma for almost 30 mil € !!! Jesus Christ. Why they bought Serbian teenager and never played him? Lord Pioli could have deployed new comers when he had time. Also he lost dressing room as well. Roma players were doing the same attitude towards Mourinho and he shut all players up and saved dressing room. Pioli keeps defending the guys who doesn’t have dignity or balls. During Berlisconi period, Milan used to bring unknown kids from Brazil and give them playing time. Now Maldini is crawling towards either the most expensive teenagers who didn’t prove nothing and players who spent most of their career in hospital. What the hell is in brain. Club owners should ban signing ambulance employees.

    2. Please. Tonali has indeed been bad but so has the team. Were you saying that last season when tonali bossed barella around every game? When tonali was our best midfielder over Kessie and bennacer last season? Tonali even started this season well and has drifted off. He’s been absolutely bad but this isn’t his fault.

Why doesn’t anyone criticize theo? All of a sudden he forgot how to go on his menacing runs and create something? He can’t even dribble anymore! Unfortunately every single player has lost their mojo and they need a string of wins to get out of this. It’s actually crazy to thing how strong we were against roma for 87 minutes compared to now.

      1. To say that Tonali was their best midfielder last season is totally ridiculous. If this season has taught Milan fans anything it’s that Kessie was by far and away the most important player to this team and the way Milan played. Tonali is just not good enough. He never marks anyone on defense, and he offers nothing going forward. Not creative, not a good passer or dribbler. He is a mediocre player at best. You have to stop showing favoritism to the Italian players. Tonali and Calabria are what’s killing this team right now.

        1. Kessie didn’t play for large parts of the second part of the season after he went on international duty and when he did play it was often as a AM.

Tonali was one of the most critical players in the run in.

And most importantly of all – HE ACTUALLY STILL PLAYS FOR THE CLUB WHEREAS KESSIE DOES NOT SO WILL ALL YOU KESSIE SUPPORTERS EITHER SHUT UP OR GO FOLLOW HIM ON INSTAGRAM.

          1. Kessie didn’t play for large parts of the second part of the season after he went on international duty and when he did play it was often as a AM.

Facts, facts and facts. Case closed. 🙂

          2. Wow. You continue to show how little you actually follow the team. He didn’t miss large parts of the season you fool, he missed a few games. If you think continuing make excuses for the players that are dragging this team down or Maldini who depleted this squad, makes you a good fan, it doesn’t.

        2. I don’t know if you don’t like Italian players but tonali was always in the starting line up last year. It was either bennacer or Kessie that sat. Usually Kessie, or playing a different position. You seem to attack tonali’s bad performances while players like theo, leao, tomori have been a a lot worse. Tonali even started this season very strong but has suffered

          1. I want Milan to win. I don’t have any favoritism towards the Italian players like a lot of people here. Calabria is hurting the team . Period. Tonali is not good enough. Period. Someone please tell me what Tonali does well? He’s not strong defensively, he often loses his mark. And he doesn’t offer much going forward. He is not creative, not a good passer or dribbler. The only thing anyone can really say about him is that he runs hard. I’m sorry but that’s just not good enough. Not for Milan.

      2. Word. Those two last minute Roma goals have completely neutered us mentally. This moment is 80% mental. Leaders in the squad need to step up now and Pioli needs to relocate the determination found after the 5-0 v. Atalanta. The scudetto is long gone and it needs to be clear the objective is top 4 and that it’s well within our reach still. We still have second half games vs. all the other top 4 contenders save Inter, and it is doable. I’m honestly not worried about the CL. Getting to the knockouts in our second season back in with this shallow squad was always going to be the objective. We did it, so any further advancement is a bonus. I say do our best, but focus on the league and 4th place. Use these games against Tottenham to challenge the squad to play good games vs. feeling pressure to win and getting crushed. Even if we lose I want cracking games v. Tottenham. If I see this, I will have hope.

  9. Pioli is in over his head now. Team over performed last season and the stars aligned. Now he is faced with adversity and he can’t do anything to turn his team around. It’s time to start exploring alternatives.

  10. Why is Thiaw on the bench is mistery, Tonali disaster, Tata was good for his standard, Diaz only one with desire. Kalulu on the right, on this position is very bad. Kjaer on the bench when Tomori is back. (Thiaw as starting CB). Calabria and Gabbia should not be even close to the bench. All others very bad. No leader on the field.

  11. The worst thing is that when Milan doesn’t make the game, the derby often is an absolute shitshow. Inter in the back are just incredibly poor when they have to play football under pressure, but there’s one thing you don’t have to do: try to beat them with high balls. And that’s exactly what we tried to do in the first half. It’s not because we’re mentally hurt that you have to play into the opponents cards. This was an absolute blunder by Pioli. We have a lot of players that are not the absolute top, but it’s clear that there’re a few players that don’t have the energy to put up a fight. I can’t see any reason to start Messias over Saelemakers. Messias simply doesn’t have the will to win. He should never be a starter. This Inter team isn’t a great team. At the start of the season we gave them a football lesson and today was the ideal game to pick that back up. It didn’t even have to be perfect. They would have messed up when it comes down to football anyway. Just not the high balls and air duels. Then they’re hard to beat.

  12. I actually want to see Vasquez introduced into this team…..what the fuck is pioli thinking by playing the same set of people day in day out……….vrancks, thiaw, adli,Vasquez all this people are not mentally ready but when will they be……Mr pioli should kindly tell us wat is going on we r Milan and loosing a match we deserve to win is not in our blood

  13. Flat tire messias starting in a formation that is based on counters is a joke. Calabria needs to sit for a few matches, he has been a big reliability in the back for some time, even disaster dest MAY do better. Tonali has been good only for yelling at referee lately, besides that a disaster. I still think tonali and ben cannot play in the same starting 11, they are very alike in terms of style and position, with ben having the upper hand. However, everyone has been somewhat bad for some games now(before lossing streak) and thats on pioli. It’ll be tough to get to top 4, but who knows maybe they’ll regroup, but with the current form is impossible to do so. Hope to see a new and better coach next season with more quality players. Doubt it, but a fan can only wish.

  14. I don’t mind the formation, but the players chosen…. come on. Kjaer is done guys, he was great while it lasted but he’s done. Crazy enough gabbia has been our best defender this year

  15. I want to know where in the world is a 31 year Junior Messias a better choice than a 21 De Kaetelere. Everyone can see that Thiaw, Vranckx, De Kaetelere are talented but Pioli is to old and Italian where something that Worked once is gonna Work again with the same players it worked the first time.

It was on of the reasons for Galliani and Berlusconis downfall.

I think the best thing now is to contact De Zerbi and try to lock him down then fire Pioli.

De Zerbi would create his own team and everyone would get new non bias chance to be in the starting eleven.

  16. Tata/ Vasquez
    Kàlulu-Thiaw-tomori-Theo
    Adli-Tonali-Bennacer
    Diaz/sale-Giroud/Origi-Leao/Rebic
    Our starting 11pls. 4 nw.
Defence vs set pieces better pls

  17. should have been 4-1 or 5-1.Martinez could have had a hat trick and brace for lukaku. This Inter team has lost so many star players but still has gosens, brozovic and lukaku on the bench.

  18. Pioli chose a team to lose a game in a way that was most palatable to him. It is obvious, there was no real prospect of success.

Messias in the middle was just bizarre and deserved a loss in and of itself.

The mercato was bad but it is being made worse by a coach who will not play the players brought in.

Pioli is not assessing a situation objectively or rationally nor is he applying any useful logic when his conclusion is that a third/fourth rate right winger is a better option in the midfield than a kid who plays the position or a guy who did it every game for Torino last year. What is the problem with Aster? He doesn’t know the system, etc. How does Messias? How many games has he played in the middle of a 5 man midfield? Did he get the week to train? Why not give that to a midfielder?

Gambling on something that has not failed before is not the exercise of logic, it is the exercise of stubbornness. Aster gets punished for a mistake that cost a win. How is he going to learn? Is there any reasonable alternative? Messias does not appear to me to have been a reasonable alternative.

Gabbia and Kjear are no better than Thiaw (which is not to say much about any of them at this point in time). However, Thiaw can at least dominate the air and add an extremely physical presence.

Milan deserved to be wiped of the park. It is a bit of a shame that happened. Sometimes it is best to rip the band-aid off.

  19. Tactics wrong again.
I don’t undestand why Origi comes off for Leao – should have been Giroud – If he doesn’t score, he adds little to the team – he cant pass, he cant hold up play, nothing useful.. this is why he was a bench player at Arsenal & Chelsea. Origi should have stayed on – younger legs, can hit a ball cleanly and needa the confidence of his manager.
We don’t have a leader on the pitch so time to pass the armband over. probably MM when he is fit or Bennacer.
Calabria – Kjaer – Giroud – Messias – All need to be benched
Don’t bench Leao. Didnt work last week and didnt work tonight.
I agree with others here and think Pioli has lost the dressing room – his days are numbered..

    1. It will take 1 full season for the guy to be ready ooo ha u don’t know Pioli, Mr pioli will put him on the bench and says he’s not ready

  20. Sofyan Amrabat should be signed as defensive midfielder

Benjamin Pavard as right back for next season.
    Kalulu as backup.
Dest should be sent back to Barcelona.

Zaniolo should be signed for next season as AM or RW(he is trying to insert a release clause of 25-30m in his Galatasaray contract)
Evan Ndicka(free agent)should be signed as centreback from Frankfurt.
Maki thiaw should be signed permanently.
Randal kolo Muani and/or Marcus thuram should be signed as both RW and centrefoward.
    They play both positions.
I think kolo Muani is better at right wing than as CF.
Diaz price should be renegotiated for a lower fee,if not, Madrid can have him back.
    Ballo–Toure should be sold
Ramy Besbani or Josh doig should be signed as Theo Hernandez’s back up.
That’s how to fix the team.
Then Thomas tuchel can be contacted down, just in case Pioli “losses it.”

  21. Tata, calabria n tonali Continue to play dis 3 guys, three point will continue to be far away from us. The earlier Pioli realize dis the better for him and the Milan team.

  22. Tata, calabria n tonali, as long as pioli continue to play dis guys, bliv u me three point is very away from dis team as well as kissing the top 4 good bye.

  23. Pioli is clueless. He has no problem benching our best player, but no matter how bad Tonali and Calabria are they will start every week. Ridiculous. Lineup should be Kalulu at RB Tomori and Thiaw at CB, Theo. Bennacer and Vranckx in the midfield. Let’s hope Ibra can come back and save this offense.

  24. How to fix the team:
For the remainder of this season:
    Play
    Kalulu-Thiaw -Tomori/Kjaer-Theo
    Bennacer-Vrancix-Adli/De ketelare
    Sale/Rebic- Giroud-Leao
    For next season
    Sign:
Zaniolo as AM/RW.(he is trying to insert a release clause in his Galatasaray contract,)

Marcus thuram as RW/CF.Hes a free agent if we can’t get Kolo Muani.

    1. It’s an automatic system. How can you not understand that? You don’t need to write how to save Milan. Noone can save Milan right now besides Pioli. And I don’t think he reads Sempre Milans forums.

  28. …..
    ………. continued…..
    OR
Breel Embolo as RW/CF if we can’t get Kolo Muani.
Evan Ndicka ( free agent) for CB.
    Ramy Besebani(free agent) for LB
    OR
    Josh doig for LB.
All as backup for Theo Hernandez.
    Sell Ballo–Toure.
    Sign Malik thiaw CB permanently.
Renegotiate the price of brahim Diaz.If Madrid refuses, send him back.

Infact there are many good free agents in German football.
Forgot to add Daichi Manasa of Frankfurt

Contact Thomas tuchel on Standby in case Pioli finally losses the plot

  29. What Milan is going through is similar to Liverpool plight. Tonali & co are down but not out. They will eventually come back strongly. No blame on Pilot or others. We need to have patience. Leah is distracted at the moment with all that is going on.

  30. Why does leao get a 6? What was so good about him? Ya maybe he should have started but nobody is playing well. It’s like theo all of a sudden forgot how to run and dribble.

Pioli? Wtf was that? One week to prep and we choose to play 10 behind the ball? Even worse and more boring than Juventus. Then even more of a joke after a week of preparation it fails miserably and we revert back to a 4 2 3 1??

Well I’ll tell you one thing. We definitely have to play the 4 2 3 1 because we looked horrible with that makeshift midfield. There was actually 10 minutes in there were we looked like the winning milan. We pressed them high and forced them to make mistakes. Then we attacked a little more in the middle. After that we went back to playing the wide game and didn’t have nothing. If we would get back to pressing high when off the ball and attacking more in the middle than just going down the wings we’d get back to winning. Why can’t pioli implement that?

Sure it was better than losing 4-0 but a loss is a loss. Especially when you don’t have a shot on net and have 30% possession. Has pioli reached his max?

So many things going wrong. Honestly tata has more effect on the defence than people think. He doesn’t direct them and it’s no coincidence we’ve been totally lost at the back. It’s like Calabria has totally forgot how to defend. Theo no longer knows how to beat a man and run and dribble. Thiaw definitely needs more minutes.

That midfield is so bad I’d actually give bakayoko an opportunity. Messias was non existent and krunic is not a high level.

Forward, giroud needs to finish that. Plain and simple. It pains me to see saelemaekers on that field and for him to even go and have attitude towards his teammates when he screws up? That guy needs to go. Leao has been so poor prior to world cup. Funny how teams have lost ineterest in him so suddenly..

Maignan needs to come back asap. I don’t know how much more I can watch of this milan!!!

  31. Looks like the pressure has finally gotten to Pioli. He has reverted to his old mediocre self. After years building something different, modern and dynamic and going against the grain of Italian football and playing young kids – he has done a complete 360. Abandoned his signature press system; doesn’t have trust in the young players; puts Messias as a mid; Calabria as a wing back; benches Leao; and completely looses the ability to motivate his players. Looks/feels like the way we were playing before the Atalanta game w years ago where we lost 5-0. Completely diff team. Not just Pioli to blame of course. M&M deserve blame to for their failed transfer campaign. They gambled with all young unproven talent and lost. Didn’t have much choice given the paltry budget Ownership provided – hardly a budget worthy of a defending champion. And looks like not spending any $ in January will doom us. Miss out on CL and 50M and sets the club back another 2-3 years if not more when player’s decide to leave. TY Elliot.

  32. After all the criticism, Tata was still top form today. With the poor defensive play we’ve had these weeks, it seems that our goalkeeper needs to have a best day every game in order to get a “pass” around here. Ridiculous. His saves were not “decent” but essential – we could have had another 3+ goals humiliating defeat tonight if it wasn’t for him. He is not the best goalkeeper in the world but to ask more from a 36 year old second choice goalkeeper is simply not fair. Very curious to see how Maignan will do under the same circumstances. Defense must improve and transfers are needed!

    1. “He is not the best goalkeeper in the world but to ask more from a 36 year old second choice goalkeeper is simply not fair. ”

It’s fair to ask the GK who is playing to NOT CONCEED 3-5 goals every match. This was the first decent match from him since… I dunno… Last spring? Let’s not get carried away thinking that two decent saves makes him competent. He’s not. He also caused confusion and even anger in the defense yesterday with his poor decision making. He also dropped one easy cross to the ground but no Inter player was near-by (thank God). Also almost conceded two directly from corner kicks.

      1. Not when the defense continues to leave guys unmarked inside the box with free shots from 6 yards out. Blaming the keeper is letting everyone else off the hook. Tata catches enough grief on here, he kept the game close yesterday. could have been much worse. The real culprits of this collapse are Calabria who can’t defend anyone and Tonali who runs around like a lost 10 year old on the pitch , never marking anyone and then just kicking the ball away any time it comes to him. They both should be on the bench. Kalulu at RB. Let Thiaw play at CB. Give Vranckx a chance along side Bennacer. Give the kids a chance because they can’t be any worse.

  33. To be honest, Pioli’s tactics this match was fine. He played defensively in the first half and went into high press in the second half.

The problem was.. Calabria. He has been a total disaster in the team. What the hell has happened to him? Can’t pass. Cant run. Cant defend. Something went hugely wrong with the lad.

All of Inter’s attacks were from the left, they figured out Calabria is the weakest link. Hell even the goal was from the left of Inter.

Jr Messias and Saele.. My gods they are bad. These two shouldn’t set foot on the field for Milan ever again unless EVERYONE in the team is dead or something.

Also.. Pioli subs this match literally made no sense. Can’t find ANY rationale behind any of the subs. Even Leao’s one.. Leao should’ve subbed in for Giroud instead Origi came off who was actually playing well and was at least trying.

The lack of a captain in the team is becoming evident. We need Ibra back in the training with the team ASAP.

    Forza Milan.

    1. “Leao should’ve subbed in for Giroud instead Origi came off who was actually playing well and was at least trying. ”

If that was Origi trying I don’t ever want to see him not trying. He couldn’t do anything right. ANYTHING! I was going to trash Calabria and Tonali for being absolutely horrible yesterday but you reminded that there was one even worse. Origi. That ttrio gifted the ball to Inter every single time they got the ball. Well… Actually, Origi couldn’t really even get the ball as he was constantly running and jumping miles off the ball. Looked like he had never even played the game before.

  34. Classic Giroud, needs 6 chances to score 1 goal. We should have sold him to Everton and bought someone else. Anyone. I didn’t even see Origi, he should never start in front of Leao…

  35. i thought messias as cmf was a feint before the match to throw inter off guard. but they really pull it and he failed miserably.
they need to do something about set pieces. in defense set pieces milan got conceded. in attack set pieces milan never score. i don’t even remember the last time milan scored from set pieces.

    1. Against Roma….before it all went to pot!

Agreed about defensive set pieces and the worst thing is defensive set pieces is actually something you can prepare for in training. Things will happen but THIS number of goals conceded from set pieces is completely unacceptable.

  36. Well the coach had to try something and it didn’t work as well…the bottom line is we are in big trouble…the best what pioli would do is come back to 4-3-3….stamp up the middle of the park and play safe and hopefully qualifying for champions league in process….Messias was a total failure. Dips in form is common no big issues in that but we better change our transfer strategy loosing players and not covering positions is what took us here…..lot of ppl here will smack me but we are exactly back to zero before the pandemic started….the team is simply missing many pieces…..too much relying on leao is starting to have its effects….the team should be build all around not on one particular player…he is amazing no doubt but dip in form is common then we collapse….why we leaking goals its midfield issues we don’t have players to support defense…..to sum it up this team needs serious investment…..

  37. These ratings are getting worse every weekend. Thiaw was fantastic, Kjaer did not have a fatal mistake, he lost a duel that Martinez was better in. Tata did havr a number of good saves, but fails to organize the back.

    1. “Kjaer did not have a fatal mistake, he lost a duel that Martinez was better in”

An in Kjaer’s defense, he was already/also marking Dzeko. Someone else should have been next to Martinez but wasn’t. Who? At least Giroud was near-by but didn’t notice if he had a man too. Anyway, even if Kjaer is our best defender in corner-kicks it’s not fair to expect him to cover/mark TWO very good (set-piece) opponents simultaneously.
