Player Ratings: Cremonese 0-0 AC Milan – attackers with a no-show

By Isak Möller -

It was a disappointing evening for AC Milan as they failed to break down a resilient Cremonese. The game ended 0-0 and there were several poor performances within the team, with the player ratings below.

Starting XI

Tatarusanu (6): He did his job, even though he wasn’t forced into action that many times in terms of saving. His distribution was good though overall.

Thiaw (6): Promising first start for the German with many duels won and also some pace shown off this evening. He had a good header on a corner which forced the goalkeeper to a save as well.

Kjaer (5.5): He sometimes lacked a bit of pace in the duels (and got lucky with the players slipping) and he never even once sent the ball long (it seemed), even though he’s quite good at that and Milan could have used it.

Tomori (6.5): Milan’s best player on the pitch along with Bennacer, winning back the ball many times and pushing forward when no one else was.

Ballo-Toure (5): Non-existent in attack and when he did get on the ball, he simply was a threat at all to the Cremonese defence. Okay in defence, but Milan need more from their left-back in attack (especially since he was a wing-back tonight).

Bennacer (6.5): He was one of the few that actually created space for Milan and kept the tempo up, when no one else did it. He was behind almost everything and it was a shame his teammates didn’t do more.

Tonali (6): Hard-fought performance in the midfield with some good passing in tight situations. Also some good deliveries on the corners, but ultimately it was just a pass for him.

Messias (6): He also tried to create chances and managed to beat his man several times. Had a good cross for Diaz in the first half and also fired away a strong shot himself. Too lonely out there, though, most of the time.

Diaz (5): He’s so frustrating to watch because he’s able to get past two or sometimes even three defenders with ease but then just fails with a simple pass or shot. So while he helped create chances, he was partly responsible for Milan not putting any of them away.

Rebic (5.5): Improved in the second half with a nice touch and go here and there but the first half was really poor.

Origi (5): Dropped down a few times but just couldn’t create anything once he got close to goal. His strike was ruled out for a clear offside by VAR and his impact wasn’t enough, clearly.

Substitutes

Leao (5.5): It probably wasn’t the best of times for him to enter the field as Cremonese just sat back and his Milan teammates were frustrated/lacking energy. So there was no space really for him to work with.

Kalulu (6): Added another dimension, replacing Thiaw, as he was able to drive forward and give Milan a better chance of sending in crosses (which ended up being the case).

De Ketelaere (5): Another tough evening exemplified by his slip when he, for once, did well to get into a good position.

Krunic (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Lazetic (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating, but looked promising the little we saw.

  1. Rebic…. Dude wanted to just pass through people I was literally shouting for him to come off.. the substitution except for the introduction of in kalulu was a joke. Messias and Rebic should have been subbed off at 60mins but what do I know? It was a poor showing

    1. Rebic did provide a perfect through-pass to Origi and gave a couple of other splendid defense-breaking passes too. He did more than the others combined – and yes, even including Leao.

      1. Rebic was garbage. Stop defending him because it’s just lies at this point. Go watch his second-half performance and then tell me he did anything good other than that one pass for Origi.

    2. Messias should have been subbed off? And brought in who? Saelemaekers who is injured? Rebic who was already on this pitch? Florenzi who is injured? There’s no RWs available.

  2. Oh boy here comes the Pioli is a terrible tactician crew, followed by the why did we play X and not Y crew, followed by the Tonali is overrated/this site only rates Tonali high crew, followed by the Bennacer is not that good crew, followed by the formation crew, followed by the problems in attack crew, followed by I told u wlx wasn’t good this proves it, then round it up with the management didn’t spend properly or need to spend more crew 🙂

It’s football, it’s sport. It happens.

    1. Literally, most of those things are true, so I don’t know what the point of this comment is. He is a poor tactician, Tonali is overrated, the formation was bad, we didn’t spend properly and we are mediocre in attack. These things are all basically facts.

      1. Yea that’s precisely what I was getting at. Much of what you said aren’t facts. Pioli, a poor tactician won the scudetto last year and we’re second in the table this year. How does that make sense? How is Tonali overrated? Maybe this site rates him high at times when he shouldn’t but he’s quality. The formation for this game I can agree that it wasn’t the best, nor is it good at all of we didn’t use it in pre-season. In a serie a game, that’s just disrespectful. With spending you can never tell how it goes. And we’re mediocre in attack yet the second best attack/goals in Serie A, one of the best xG and in open play, tell me how does that make sense?

        1. @ IKWYDLS You answered your own question: “How is Tonali overrated? Maybe this site rates him high at times when he shouldn’t “. That is the definition of overrated.

        2. @ IKWYDLS You answered your own question: “How is Tonali overrated? Maybe this site rates him high at times when he shouldn’t “. That is the definition of overrated.

          1. I’ll give him that and I did say “maybe”. But much of the rest you can test with actual data. There’s no denying were the second best attack in the league,.that’s pure facts 🤷‍♂️
Even spending, we talk about spending on CDK but quickly forgot we also got Giroud, Theo, Maignan, Leao. We can’t win them all

        3. Read your own comment again, pal.

You’re delusional, my friend. I hope fans like you are happy because we are where we are because of people like you.

  3. Embarrassing.
This is not a good team and it’s not based just off of this game but this entire season up to this point.
Milan actually has more points than they deserve based on the performances.
Most people won’t like this but I put all this on Paolo Maldini.
He has absolutely decimated the quality and depth of this team over the last 15 months.
Lost 4 starters on free and only replaced one of them with Maignan. Maldini not getting any transfer money for those players have hampered the club in their ability to replace those starters.
Plus If you remember, Elliott allowed Maldini contract to expire and it took a whole month for RedBird to give him a new contract. I believe that Milan winning the title saved Maldini’s job. RedBird was afraid of backlash from fans if they replaced him with capable sporting director. If Milan even finished 2nd last year IMO Maldini would have been replaced.
The core of this team is based on the time while Boban was still with Maldini and since Boba left Maldini hasn’t been able to sell any player nor has he had many hits in the transfer market.
Not to mention that he spent 35 mil and whole summer on CdK who might be alot of things but he isn’t a n10. Your team desperately needs a goal and you can’t even get on the ball in 40 minutes .
All hope is not lost, but Milan needs major reinforcements in January. There are Napoli bench players that can easily be our starters .
Ante rebic should be sold , for today’s performance he deserves negative 5 rating
And Lazetic in 8 minutes did more than Leao and CDK in 40

    1. Truth. But hey, don’t you know that Kessie sucks, and Calhanoglu sucks? Don’t forget Bakayoko who is one of the highest paid players on the team , can’t get on the pitch and for some reason is still on the team. Add that to the list. Milan undeniably has a worse squad this season than last season, and the previous season, which is unacceptable. I was saying this before the season, but all of the cheerleaders on here just want to live in fantasy land and believe all the Milan players are great! Ok.

      1. @K you are absolutely right. Milan, quality wise, has been gradually getting worse over the last 2 seasons. It was more of the competition in serie A getting much worse than Milan getting better from the previous season.
We all have issues with Hakan’s behavior since he left Milan, but a fact is that Milan still hasn’t replaced him. In his last year as a Milan player in serie A, he had 4 goals and 10 assists. In comparison, his “replacement ” Brahim, in 2.5 years in serie A, has a total of 11 goals & 8 assists.
Last year, as an inter player, Hakan, as a box to box midfielder, had 7 goals and 13 assists.
Kessie hasn’t been replaced with an equal or better quality player.
Romagnoli hasn’t been replaced with an equal or better quality player.
And I would even throw Donnarumma- Maignan into question. Yes, Maignan is overall a better GK than Giggio, but he isn’t as available as Giggio was. Maignan missed 2 months last season, and he has already missed 2+ months this season. Giggio was always playing .
Those are all starting positions where Milan has been gradually getting worse over the last 2 seasons

    2. Also, after Boban was fired, Milan went hard after Lazio sporting director Igli Tare to be Milan’s SD, but he turned them down

    3. Such a Maldini hater there…

“The core of this team is based on the time while Boban was still with Maldini and since Boba left Maldini hasn’t been able to sell any player nor has he had many hits in the transfer market.”
      – Tell us a director who has sold anyone from Milan since Kaká left. Oh wait, it’s Maldini who sold Cutrone and that’s about it. Look at the transfer fees Milan has gotten during the last 10 years. And you trash-talk Maldini who has been selected “Director of the year” by two different parties already.

      1. Patrick Cutrone was sold in 2019, while Boban was still there.
You could have maybe used Suso as an example. Maldini sold Piatek and Paqueta for a loss of money.
Ibra , Thiago Silva and Balotelli were sold for profit after Kaka left.
Just because Maldini won popularity award doesn’t mean he is good.
I can use the same argument against you when you “hate” on Leao even though he was selected as MVP of the league .
With Juventus in a cycle change and Inter in financial mess, Milan had the opportunity to go and win 3,4,5 scudetti In a row if Maldini was able to sell players, instead of letting walk for free, & use the money to replace them with at least same quality players. Instead of that Milan got overtaken by Napoli.
Same Napoli who sold Koulibaly & Fabian with 1 year left on their contract & reinvested that money in better starters & even better bench.
FYI. Maldini became part of Milan management in 2018, first as Leonardo right hand man then as a SD.
In 2018, Gigio & Hakan had 3 years left on their contracts, Kessie and Romagnoli had 4 years left on theirs. All that time and he was incapable of either renewing their contracts or selling those players before contracts expired.
But hey at least he got his awards.
He has decimated the depth and quality of this team

  4. Season is still far from over so its not like ive lost faith in that we can still win the league as 8 points can fairly easy be caught up on in a 3 points league system but when that is said and pardon my french what a shit show we winessed tonight.

    1. Regardless of tonight performance, 8 points is a lot. We need Napoli to nearly collapse to have a chance. It can happen but it is unlikely. It will be a big surprise if we manage to win the title this year.

      1. I have to disagree even though i agree that napoli currently looks unbeatable it can quickly change as ive followed football for so long that ive seen it happen many times over the years, 2 draws for napoli and a loss while we win then its down to 2 points so no i dont see it as we need them to collapse. maybe a bit of fortune and that they run into a few bumps on the road but not really too far fetched to believe that we can catch up with them again as we have only played 14 of 38 maches so mathematically it can easily change.
When that is said napoli should be considered as favourites at this point and we certainly hasnt made it easier for ourselves and will have to play far more consistently in the spring than we have done recently.

        1. You are probably right, it might be too pessimistic to rule the title out already. But 8 points are a lot, it’s basically 3 extra games (1 loss and 2 draws) for Napoli. We will drop points as well.
In any case we will need a nearly perfect second half (similar to Napoli’s – ie 10 consecutive wins) to have a real chance. It’s far from easy.

          1. Well i agree that we would clearly have to up the anttics in second half of the season no question there but as there already is an article up here on sempre milan that says we are only 2 points behind were we was last year point wise i see no reason why why shouldnt be able to do so again.
Napoli will also have to keep playing at the high levels they have done and i do have my doubts if they can manage that.

  5. We are nothing without giroud and Theo. Especially Theo like the left side is nothing without him. Origi bro why can’t try this guy again. We need a good striker really bad bro. Defence is solid and if we played Theo and Kalulu we could have done lot better. We underestimated Cremonese first of all btw. We should do good with small teams this is not how our spirit was when we battled for Scudetto. We wanted every single point now we are just throwing

  6. When you keep on using the same players all the time, they become stale, Pioli needs to involve the other players, and he sometimes makes very puzzling substitutions…

    1. Exactly. Rebic should get a 0.5. He is trash. I want him gone from this club. I’m shocked he’s even a professional footballer with his lack of ability. Worst touch of any player I’ve seen. Even worse than Lukaku.

  7. Yes, I know that it was a poor collective performance, and we should not be pointing fingers toward individual players, but I am really worried about how bad Leao’s performances have been lately. I am not sure whether the contract extension saga is taking a toll on his youthful mind, but he is barely even a shadow of his former self.

    1. He was literally brought on because the others couldn’t do the job against a weak team. He had 20 mins to turn a game around which the others couldn’t do. The whole idea was that he could have been rested for this game since it’s technically easier on paper. You could see it in his warm up wondering if he’d have to come in once more to rescue the team. He’s the highest scorer and assist player for our team (5/4)..what more does he need to do?

      1. I’m the last one to knock Leao, I know how crucial he is to this team, but he played like a clown tonight and maybe the last couple games as well. He tries to dribble two and 3 guys every time he gets the ball instead of making the correct pass. He is best when he beats his man and then looks for the open player for the assist. He is trying to do too much now.

        1. “I’m the last one to knock Leao, I know how crucial he is to this team, but he played like a clown tonight and maybe the last couple games as well.”

Impossible to disagree. He’s already thinking about his next club. Perhaps he wants to leave in January already.

      2. “what more does he need to do?”

Give his best when on the pitch – just like anyone else. Have you seen him in the last 5-7 matches? Do you think he’s playing on his level ATM? Is he the same guy from last spring? Hardly.

” He’s the highest scorer and assist player for our team (5/4)..”
Yes from the last 17 goals Milan have scored he has made only 2 of them and given 1 assists. Giroud did better in just one match.

    2. Glad someone mentioned this. Since the fruitless discussions they had last on his renewal, Milan have changed in their game play.
Pioli has been trying to play without his importance and it’s been costly. Same way we played when Kessie’s renewal talks failed.
Pioli is currently trying to play without Leao, took the team off his shoulder, seemingly playing Theo up front. He seem to be ready to play a 3-5-2 and dispose Leao. Watch out!
This whole experiment and decline is to make Leao irrelevant. We bounced back last season, we will again this season. Pioli is working for and with MALDINI more.

      1. LOL. Leao has lost his interest in playing and you blame Pioli for his decline. Wow.

“This whole experiment and decline is to make Leao irrelevant”
Yes. Absolutely. Of course. ‘Cos why not? And the Earth is flat too. And it’s not Putin and Russia that invaded Ukraine, right.

Please take your meds. You need them.

        1. Hey @bb,
My comment is quite explicit because I didn’t try to put balme on anyone but rather stating the obvious.
Maldini will probably prefer to Cash out than lose him on a free. Pioli is trying to make the team independent of him – which is actually right to do.

You should learn to read through the lines and open mind. I am not one of the kids picking sides and trading blames. And you should note that it is rude to use that line: “take your meds”.

  8. This guy has it in for Kjaer. What more do you want him to do? Milan get a clean sheet almost every time he starts. And if you watched the game he did send several long balls, but nobody up front could win a battle. Milan are incapable of breaking down teams that sit back and play a deep line because their passing is the worst. They can’t create anything against these types of teams, going on 3 seasons now. We need Ibra back soon.

    1. Yea I was also thinking we need Ibra atleast he scored bro at 40 even our attack is flop he played less matches but scored 8 goals last season. And it really annoying to see Kjær get 5.5 bro atleast guy kept a clean sheet bro give him a 6 that’s rude ppl are considering him old and are not giving him the rating fairly I don’t know if any player is old he doesn’t get rating how it works

      1. Bro, Cremonese was in their own half defending for 90 of the 95 minutes played.
What did Kjaer do in the defensive phase for people to praise him on here? He played vs a team that barely passed the half line

          1. Milan was awful today and lost 2 points to a team that will play in serie b next season
No player, apart from maybe Messias, deserves anything over a 4, the least of all Kjaer who had no work defensively and was awful in his ball distribution from the back, as was his partner Tomori

  9. Pioli’s got to teach these forwards to stay onside. Rebic should be used in a more poacher type role rather than the wing. Pioli made his changes why too late.

    1. “Rebic should be used in a more poacher type role rather than the wing.”

This. He can score when he gets the ball in the box. Actually he can score from a distance too but his abilities go to waste in other positions.

  10. In 83 Minutes, Ante Rebic’s performed as below;

    Shot On goal; 1
    ” On Target; 0
    ” Off Target; 1
    Key passes; 1
    Lost Balls; 21
    Big Chances; 1

He ended 21 separate attacks losing the ball, misplacing a pass and overall putting us on the back foot. Inexcusable at this level esp for a team challenging for the scudetto.
It also made Origi’s work impossible. Also made Leao’s efforts frantic on account of the little time he had to try and salvage the W. Thus the dissent yellow.

Ante Rebic has unfortunately not been the same post injury recovery. Either he picks it up or he shouldn’t be a Milan player in Feb 2023. We’re better off promoting Chaka Traore at this point as Rafa’s cover. Also, we have to move on from Fode. The drop in quality is extreme when Theo’s out/rested and esp in a game Where Thiaw is the RB. Brahim had to shift wide to support Messias coz Thiaw was basically a CB.
It left the CAM position empty and Ante was not interested in covering it. Messias and Brahim played well though
Origi wasn’t being fed, mostly due to the lack of a No. 8/10. Fik and Kjaer solid and Malik was ok defensively although there was no RB attack today.

Finally, Today’s dropped points was 70% on Rebic IMO. Unfortunate but true.

    1. “It also made Origi’s work impossible. ”
Yet it was Rebic who did all the work in Origi’s disallowed goal and it was Rebic who handed a 10 000 € scoring chance for Origi on a silverplate in the 1st half. Funny, eh?

“Also made Leao’s efforts frantic on account of the little time he had to try and salvage the W.”
Yes. Blame Rebic for Leao’s exceptionally poor performance. LOL. That’s a new one!

          1. Says the person defending Rebic everywhere like his life depended on it. Rebic!! Of all the players to defend, you pick him. Hilarious.

  11. Bro why don’t we play vrankx guy seemed even if he flops just try him if he works we might get rotation instead of trying pobega and krunic and also we just didn’t talk about Brahim what shi he did

  12. @ IKWYDLS You answered your own question: “How is Tonali overrated? Maybe this site rates him high at times when he shouldn’t “. That is the definition of overrated.

  13. The only thing I don’t like about how Pioli rotates players is the fact that his main starters do not start the game. I don’t understand the reason why Leao starts on the bench, or Kalulu, and then bring them on in the second half when chasing the game. I would have them start instead, hopefully score early, and then sub them off in the second half to get them some rest. I don’t see how having them come on in the second half gives them any rest…

  14. I agree with trading Leao and get as much money as we can, even in January. All I’m saying is he is the best we have right now and starting him on the bench makes no sense to me. What are we saving him for?

  15. These are the types of games Ibra would win for us (Giroud probably could too). Teams that sit deep, physical but not much else. He’d hold up the ball, make a turn, and smash it into the corner of the net. No one out there tonight was capable of that type of hold up play. He’d know that he’s better than the other team and he would make sure he proves it. No one showed that type of confidence out there. The fact that Brahim consistently put 2-3 players behind him and STILL couldn’t find a finish or a killer pass says the teams movement and his ability to think ahead are both severely lacking.

  16. The Monza win was a false dawn. Pioli mistakenly believed that he could rotate after that win, he got excited by Diaz and Origi, but since then, both players have shown why they’re bench material. The title is gone, because I expect Leao will be sold in January. We need a replacement for Leao, a striker and a back-up goalkeeper. I don’t think RW is an issue. Between Messias and Saelemaekers, the right wing is okay, and Pioli should try CDK there. Mazzochi would be a good option for RB, Beto (Udinese) for center forward. Leao is going to be difficult to replace.

  17. 2020/21, we were 8 points ahead of Inter sometime like this, but Inter still won the League.
Napoli’s 8 point lead seem huge but can still be lost. We just need to find our rhythm and get consistent. We played almost similarly last season. It was Milan, Napoli at the top of the table with Inter behind, but it all turned on the head between December and January before we eventually had to struggle to close up with Inter. We needed to beat Inter in the 2nd leg to reduce the led.
Simply put Napoli’s 8-point lead is breakable and things can still turn on its head.
However, for now, I think Pioli/Milan is currently trying to deal with Leao’s departure to find a new solution (making him of less importance as he did for Kessie’s last term), even though it’s costing us. I wish Leao can decide early enough (less probable), but either ways Milan is trying to move on without him.
I think he will be traded on or before next summer window.

  19. You guys are talking plenty but the main issue is the coach. Just two games to world cup and about 2months break, and you are doing rotations with the squad as if Milan will be participating in the world cup. I just don’t understand

  20. Poor starting you know two of your best player was suspended both giroud and theo still yet bench another good player leao for the first 45min,too bad

  21. Called the draw. Tough to win without starting three best attacking players, Giroud, Leao and Theo, and then also having an ineffective RW and AMC. Top 4 finish is the the goal this season. Sell Leao in January and use the money plus the “normal” transfer budget to finally fix all the holes in the summer.

    1. This is true. You cannot be without both Leao and Theo on the left side. Especially when your right side is weak and you don’t have your main striker. Doesn’t matter who they are playing, Milan do not have the depth to be resting players against any team. Pioli should have started Leao, hopefully Milan get a lead before half, and then you can rest some players.

  22. Never watched such a load of crap they were disgraceful not fit to wear the milan jersey.the last pass was shocking .how can pioli and maldini watch it. Cash in on leao and buy players with a better work rate .

  23. All these Maldini haters just crawled out of their Sh*t holes because Milan lost one match?

Did these “FANS” forgot that Milan won Scudetto last year?

Did these blind Fvcks forgot That Milan, the worst team in Serie A with the worst SD in history of the club, somehow managed to reach UCL knockout stages after what.. 10 years?

Somehow these dumba$ses began to suck Hakan’s as$hole too now that Milan had a bad night? Hakan is the best player in the world according to you, sure bruh. But disrespectful bit*hes need to be rooted out of the team. End of story.

Did your sorry As$ forgot Maldini Had NO Budget from Owner this Summer and only had to do with what the club earned and that earning was All because of Maldini? Name ONE other player that fits the profile we needed in CAM except CDK. And for CDK.. all skills are there.. just needs confidence. He is playing in a league that has been HISTORICALLY difficult for playmakers due to tougher defenses.

I understand a lot of you are mad because we had a bad day. But ungratefulness.. is a bitchy attitude. Get OVER IT. Or go back to lick Shinter’s A$$.

Maldini singlehandedly made Milan competitive again. and some of these delusional fVcks thinks Maldini downgraded the team? From WHAT exactly? Gattuso era when we consistently finished 6th? GET OUTTA HERE.

Go back to supporting and kissing Hakan’s a$s. Just because your shinter doesn’t have enough fans to run an active blog, you don’t have to come here and stink ours.

    Silence is better than ignorance.

BTW, 5 of ours starters are Missing. Calabria, Saele, Mike, Theo and Giroud.

What really happened is UCL victory got into the brains of the players. Pioli failed get the players back from Uphoria + fatigue of UCL. This is what UCL pression does to a team. Same reason why Shinter lost focus midseasaon last year and lost the Scudetto. Stop blaming players and Coach. No one has ANY experience on UCL. It’s gonna take time to get used to it.

    Forza Milan.

    1. B.S. Love Maldini all you want but the fact is the signings he’s made and the players he let leave for FREE has made this team worse. And don’t cry about payroll. That’s why you don’t let players leave for free. They saved money by not signing Donnarumma, saved money by not signing Calghanoglu, saved money by not signing Kessie. Where did they reinvest that money? What about the money they get for making Champions League? They were going to sign Sanchez and Botman, what happened to that money? They sign a few cheap kids that may or may not be good in a few years but don’t make the team any stronger now. Let’s go through the bad signings: Bakayoko 4 mil salary doesn’t play at all in 2 seasons now, Ballo-Touré, Adli, Origi, Tata, Dest, Vrancx, Thiaw, Pobega, CDK. None of these players have made the team stronger, most can’t even get on the pitch. This is unacceptable.

      1. @K Dude… Barca lost FVCKIN’ MESSI For free. Manu Lost EFFING POGBA. STOP BItchin. Every team was affected by Covid regression. We are no exception. A LOT Of players took the chance to change club for free to get more money.

Of course Maldini has his weaknesses, and I do agree, we shouldn’t have let either of them for free. But that is the reason for all our “DOWNFALLS”? What downfalls exactly? We missed out on some money. But that makes Maldini the worst thing in Milan? F off.

Where did they reinvest money ? It went to balance out the loss we have been making. we had 198Mil loss and now.. it’s down to 28mil. How the F do you think it’s happened?

They were going to sign Botman and Sanchez.. so what do you think Vranckxx, Thiaw, CDK dropped out of a tree on San Siro?
Why do you think we are trying to offload Bakeyoko?

How do you know all the new players didn’t make the team stronger?

  25. Interesting fact : Milan have 2 points less than last season at this point.

Another interesting fact : Milan have won against all the top team bar Napoli (Milan were the better team though) and Atalanta (draw).

Historically Milan have always struggled against the minnows who defend with numbers. That’s why we only have one Scudetto from the times on Ancelotti. Even last season, we dropped so many points against the smaller sides.

Napoli have been playing fantastic football, but also we’re really lucky in some matches. They did better in the transfer market than us, and that’s why they’re 8 points clear.
