Player Ratings: AC Milan 2-0 Juventus – Several players shine; one flop

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan got the confidence boost they were after as they managed to beat Juventus by two goals to nil this evening. Several players did really well and down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Starting XI

Tatarusanu (6): He only had to make one or two proper saves and they weren’t hard ones either. He sometimes takes a little bit too much time on the ball and prefers to send them long, but obviously he’s not as good as Maignan on that.

Kalulu (7): Such an improvement compared to the right-back Milan had against Chelsea. He won the ball high up many times and did really well to balance Theo’s role, with the Rossoneri almost playing with a back three at times.

Gabbia (6.5): He didn’t make any mistakes against what was a rather poor Juve attack and he won quite a lot of duels. A positive display indeed ahead of what could be a start against Chelsea.

Tomori (7): Again, the Juve attackers weren’t in the best of forms but he stayed close to his man all the time and made several interceptions. The goal was the icing on the cake for him today.

Hernandez (7): Milan are a completely different side with him on the pitch and not just because he’s a great left-back, but also because he offers tactical solutions. Today, for example, he had a very central role at the start which also suited his qualities.

Bennacer (7): If the display against Chelsea was somewhat poor for his standards, this was certainly a very good one. Calm on the ball and always composed even in tight situations, which was great for Milan.

Tonali (6.5): Passion and hard work from the midfielder today who didn’t always shine technically, but was an important presence nevertheless. It was one of those games in which he could get stuck in and make the most of his physical strength.

Diaz (7): He started the game very well and had a few nice turns to upset the Juventus defenders. The goal was just fantastic stuff from the Spaniard who really did well in that right-wing role.

Pobega (6): A solid display from the midfielder who won quite a lot of balls and used his strength to hold off the opponents. Nothing more, but he deserves praise for doing the basics so well.

Leao (7): Another very good day for the Portugueses winger who, towards the end, toyed with the Juventus defenders (almost too much). No goal or assist, but he hit the post twice and was important as always.

Giroud (5.5): He got the assist for Tomori’s goal (but it was a bit lucky) but he failed to impose himself as a focal point of the attack. When he did win duels, he often misplaced the following pass and we all know he can do better.

Substitutes

Krunic (6): Just what we needed from him at that point of the game. Strength and presence to upset Juve’s attempts (albeit weak ones) to get back into the game.

Rebic (6): He pressed hard and made life difficult for the opponents.

De Ketelaere (6): He had a bright start with a few very nice actions but faded a little (due to the progress of the game, rather than his abilities). An encouraging display on the right, though.

Vranckx (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

Origi (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. If origi and theo passed it to rebic instead of poorly shooting it we coudlve got 2 more goals
Ofc their runs were fabulous but our players are often acting selfish in the box

Besides that pobega had a solid display specially in pressing and diaz looks promising in rw

Not to forget our defensive lineup looked very solid with gabbia clearly improving

So much anticipation to getting a revenge on chelsea

    1. Maybe after that wonderful solo effort by Diaz, the other players were triggered to ‘show-off’ lol. Chelsea def have a higher kind of intensity than what Juve did. Hopefully we’ll play with our usual self.

    2. I’m ok with Origi being selfish, we need him playing with confidence. The final chance was a good opportunity to open his account.

      1. Nonsense, this is the shit he’s been doing not the first time, is not only about you scoring the goal, but team work, if it’s rebic that is hold the ball he will pass it to him at that position. Honestly origi should be sold in transfer window I beg.

  2. So happy for this win. But let’s point a few things out. Although Pobega does not impress me, he helps out the team.in ways CDk doesn’t. Which helps our midfield and ultimately our defence

But each time he is on the ball I am worried. Kudos to Pioli for trying something different tonight. I mean damn. Theo was really needed. I love Diaz. I don’t think he is better than CDK nor adli but he brings a different energy. He defends, he drops down to get the ball to make things happen, although the execution is lacking. Anyway I love this team. Forza Milan .

  3. Good win albeit against a poor Juventus. For those who have been calling for the 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-1-2, it’s obvious these formations don’t work for us. We started the game with the former, and it caused Leao to go missing for chunks of the first half. Leao needs space to run into. If Pioli wants to play with three CM, it’s got to be 4-3-3, and it seems like that what they were doing more of in the second half before the subs. The other thing we confirmed is Theo/Tomori/Gabbia/Kalulu > Theo/Tomori/Kalulu/Dest. Kalulu needs to be RB until Calabria comes back, with Kjaer or Gabbia next to Tomori in the middle. Dest should only be used in emergencies or with a big lead to give someone else some rest.

    1. Leao needs space to run to, sure. On paper the formation is the formation but on application the coach can alter the setup to accommodate our weapon, that’s where coaching dynamic comes in. I hope he finds a solution to utilize the players available to him.

    2. 👌🎉. #vero, Good point, so many criticise Calabria for no reason, I hope you can see that Calabria is underrated, is seriously missing in the lineup. In serial a today only two I can call in place of Calabria, mind you they are not better than him but only physically stronger than him. DiLorenzo and dumfriz. So please my captain deserves much respect pls. Origi is to selfish not Milan type, I hope you all noticed that Diaz is not playing team, only when in a tight corner, which is bad for him, also apart from the goal, he always wants to show himself as if he is the same level with Messi, this can get better on the right flank, if you all don’t understand why it look as if he had a good game put Dest in RB and pogbega in RM you will understand, kalulu n bennacer that covered his mess.

1. best comment!! 2 post, 2 penalties, 2 selfish attempts from origi and theo.. could be 5-0 or 6-0 easily

      juve were lucky

      1. 2 selfish attempt does not mean 2 goals if passed to teammate. Look at how C. Ronaldo squandered 2 chance vs Omonia after 2 passes by non-selfish teammates.

There were 2 juve defender between Origi and Rebic. Rebic didn’t put himself at the best position to receive a pass.

    1. They’re hiding in their cave, waiting for Milan to slip up again so they can post their genius observation as if they won Scudetto and Champions League multiple times lol.

    2. We are here, we won, it was a good showing, kudos to the team as it’s the fighting spirit we want to see. Lossing isn’t a big deal but the manner of the loss is.

  5. Chelsea’s gonna have a mich higher intensity and better players but it was good to see theo and Kalulu in the fullback roles. What a difference from ballo and dest. Gambia did well today but a little bit nervous still with him. Hope he does well if he starts Tuesday

  6. Big 3 points.
Liked Pioli inserting Pobega to beef up the midfield. Defensively he had a good game.
Happy for Brahim, that was a nice goal, especially because of the criticism he gets from all of us.
Defense looked solid with Gabbia at CB and Kalulu back at RB.
Offensively our passing are so frustrating. Giroud once again got zero service. Also some players were very selfish and could have scored more goals.
Officiating was horrendous. 2 clear penalties for Milan and an obvious foul prior to Milans 1st goal.
After Chelsea Millans schedule gets easier so we gotta use this win to go on a run before the world cup break.
Now let’s get a win vs Chelsea

  7. Happy for Diaz. Everyone played pretty well, but I have to say pobega is just too slow to play on the midfield. ALways having to dive and lunge to get to the ball, I can see that leading to a bunch of yellow cards. CDK’s body language is not good. When he turns the ball over he hangs his head and walks instaed of trying to get it back. He looks defeated. Not good.

  8. Hopefully juve will get financial problems after this bad season so we can buy chiesa for the right wing for a good price🙏🏼

I know i am just dreaming but imagine leao on the left chiesa on the right

    1. Agreed milanfan. Chiesa is Italian and a natural for our weak point at RW

Given they sold Kulusevski it’s possible Juve would let Chiesa go next summer if they don’t finish top 4. However the downside is even if we muster a €40-50mn bid, its very likely a PL side will come in with €60mn or more, plus offer waaaaay higher wages.. so then it will come down to the will of the player to stay in Serie A.

Not impossible but unlikely. He’d be the perfect addition imho

On topic… we were solid, Juve were poor. Hoping we can raise our game for next week’s clash against Chelsea, even a draw would be OK just can’t afford to lose.

  9. As I said before our best lineup is with Kalulu at RB and Tomori and Kajer (when healthy) in middle. Kudos to Gabbia who did a splendid job today. Excellent to build on. Pls keep Diaz at RW from now on and no more Sales unless we are defending a lead with 20min to go. Still like to see Adli get some minutes and more from Aster. Poegba did great today. Solid display. Origi needs a few starts to get his legs under him. Leao again so deadly. We better resign him. Hope we can keep this momentum for Tuesdays game.

  10. It was the bloody hell time for Pioli to put Diaz on the RW position! We’ve been asking for it for over a year now and FINALLY he did that. And – surprise, surprise – Diaz played his best match in over a year. Who would have guessed? Oh right, some people here.

    1. By that same token why not try CDK as RW and Adli as CAM? Brahim did well, but it was by no means some kind of breakout performance. I still saw instances of him getting muscled off the ball and a couple of dumb misplaced passes. His goal was a bit lucky as he shot it right at the GK and just managed to get it by, instead of shooting across goal or chipping it. But I’m nitpicking a bit on the goal. Plus, I think that for Brahim to be most effective at RW, we need to play 4-3-3, as it alleviates the wingers of their defensive duties. So no CDK from the start. Not shutting Diaz at RW down, but it presents new quandaries for Pioli to solve.

    2. Did you watch the game?? he cant played as RW… look at the first half, milan depends on left side… nothing contribution from right side… he has no speed, he cant dribbling…

his goal from juve mistakes… i think he more comfortable for tonnali or bennacer position…

  11. I’m very happy for Fik. I think we all saw the seriousness in his reaction, that boy knows his levels slightly dropped and he responded. I’m chuffed for him honestly.
Gabbia I’m not sure about against Chelsea I won’t lie, but I’ll let him speak for himself.
Giroud, has a very special role for us, yes he won’t always get service and won’t always shine but I’ll tell you what, I’ve got 150% trust in that guy to make it matter when it does matter.
I’ve got a friend that supports Juve and usually on our WhatsApp group we would talk big and do a whole pre game promo weeks I’m advance if this clash, but honestly this time I had 0 worries considering how poor this Juve is, I didn’t even wast my breath and the boys made it a simple win… exactly what we needed. No fuss, just a win and move on.
They can carry in and cry about Allegri in mid table while we focus on our season.
Great victory to take to Chelsea.
    Forza Milan❤️

  12. Happy for the 3 points and the win.
That was not a very entertaining match to watch for most of the game, mostly because of Juventus awful style of football. They are just dreadful. Also the officiating , i don’t know what is the point of VAR if can’t see a clear handball
Milan was the better team but there were also a lot of mistakes especially in the passing game.
Defense looked good when called upon. Happy with Gabbia’s performance.
Our midfield runs a lot but their passing is just amateur level. So many times they had a teammate open but Bennacer, Tonali just can’t make the pass. The next time Bennacer makes a forward pass or a thru ball that will get to a teammate will be the first time. Miss me with the Bennacer best midfielder in Serie A.
Pobega did good in the defensive phase but just like 4 and 8 not much in the build up
Leao had a good game . Giroud once again got no service. Players need to stop being so selfish, (Theo-Origi). Rebic should have had 2 easy tap ins if not for their selfisness
Brahim scored a great goal but i think most here are overreacting thinking that he is the solution for the RW. Besides the goal he scored that came from a counter after a bad Vlahovic pass and Brahim picking up the ball in the middle of the center circle, he was very ineffective on the right. Was he a threat on the right, did he create anything on the right? No
Glad we won but it has to be a lot better Tuesday if Milan wants to get a good result vs Chelsea
    Forza Milan

  13. Milan have already played Napoli, Udinese, Atalanta ,the other 3 teams in the top 4, plus both Inter and Juventus and is on level points at the top of the table( with extra game played of course).
They need to go on a run now and finish off this favorable schedule before the start of the world cup, collect maximum points and separate from the rest of the pack, especially from inter. Because comes January it will be like a new season is starting and teams like Juventus, inter will get some of their better players back from injuries plus they might even bring reimbursements.
Hopefully management will provide some money for a decent RW in January, we have waited and suffered long enough

    1. Nah… forget about about the Merdi and la Vecchia Putana, they won’t win anything this season. Nowadays our great rival is called Napoli.

      1. Napoli has shown year after year that they will start hot but they will always fizzle out as season progresses and adversity hits them, so I’m not so concerned with them for now.
Juventus looks a mess right now but Chiesa’s speed, Di Maria skill and Pogba physicality can make their team look way better than they do at this moment.
Inter is still the team that I look the most where they are at on the standings in comparison with us. Top to bottom they have the players to make them the biggest threat to Milan. Can they put it together? I don’t think so with Limone Inzaghi . They are a mentally weak team, something that they get from their coach.
But either way Milan needs to use these several weeks to put some distance from them on the standings

  14. We played a good game. Not an outstanding display, but a good one. I guess we have to improve in order to beat Chelsea, but it was a good game and certainly a huge boost in confidence. Theo is veritable game changer, alongside Leão our most important and gifted player individually speaking. Diaz played very well and I’m glad for the guy. CDK has loads of room to improvement and I’m convinced that he’ll be one of our key players, perhaps not already in this season, but certainly in the future.

    FORZA MILAN.

  15. I want everyone to consider that we field the player with a new formation, so it is normal to lost the passing fluidity. We played a great game, and could’ve score 3 or 4 more goals if we ever lucky with officiating these days.
If we keep winning every season, and represent Italy in Europe, i think the officiating favour would switch to us

  16. OOOOH WHAT A SWEET GAME RESULT!

I GRADUATED WITH BACHELORS OF LAW ON 6TH OCTOBER 2022 BUT SADLY WE LOST THAT DAY TO CHELSEA….

BUT THIS WIN AGAINST JUVENTUS IS A HAPPY RESULT TO SEE!

    FORZA MILAN!

  17. Great game! Pioli is on fire, after a dreadful performance vs. Chelsea. Changes were needed and they came.
    1. CDK — out. Bad against blues, bad tonight he need a LOT to work on. Slow, not intense pressing, not present. Good pass and some control on the clear ball is not enough. This is not Belgium!
    2. Dest — out. I dont even want to comment…
    3. Pobega — in. The only strong substitute for Kessie. Very good and covering, very intense. Good at build up, not good as Kessie in attack but well he is not Kessie. Still we need that energy in the field to help Bennaser.
    4. Bennaser was fantastic, but very poor against Chalsea.
    5. Thanks God of Football and Madonna of physiotherapy Hernandes is back! Since we dont have right wing without we dont have neither. Beings depth and movement, make space for Leao.
    6. DIAZ! Amazing performance. High intensity, covered the lack of right wing at lease defensively helping Kalulu.

On a bad side. We miss Salad.

  18. “Terrible tactics from Pioli. Pioli is not a good tactician. I can’t believe he played that formation when this other formation would clearly be better. Why isn’t “insert name here” playing? I’m sure he would be much better than that other player I don’t like but when he performs well I don’t say anything.

Oh my bad, I’m already gearing up for the comments section for the midweek game 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Anyways 3 points from Juve is welcomed anyday. Don’t matter how we played 😁

  19. Sorry to say this, but judging here about earned “points”has not much to do with real state on the field.5,5 for Giroud???The guy has won almost all high battles during whole match, have played tacticaly perfect match, with bite and huge Km covering.Maybe one of his best games for AC so far

  20. Finally… finally… finally…. we play a 3 man midfield!! We bossed the midfield today, Pobega ran and pressed and allowed space for Tonali and Bennacer to work and move the ball.

And Kalulu basically played 3rd CB having him, Gabbia, and Tomori stay back while Theo pressed. Because we had effectively 3 CBs anytime one would be super aggressive and press hard it was ok because we still had 2 more CBs behind to clean up. Perfect. Gabbia and Tomori kept Vlahovic perfectly silent.

I have to say I’ve been asking for it for a long time but Pioli showed he has some tactician in him. He didn’t just run the same 4231 regardless of the players at his disposal and regardless of the opponents, he finally adapted and set up the team perfectly.

Well done Pioli, he gets MOTM. He 100% lost us the game v Chelsea but full redemption today.

  21. Gabbia looks confident in a big game now, he deserves to play againts Chelsea. With more aggressive tackles, he could be our new Kjaer. Calm & aggressive tackles.

And the goal from Brahim, thats what he must do often. Play faster. In that goal, we can see that he has the speed if he want it. I wonder he can do that often if go to RW.

  22. Milan played badly, fortunately Juve played even worse… that’s why the results were different from Chelsea and Napoli who were able to beat Milan.
diaz is not suitable as an AM and right wing… Throughout the game it was seen how Milan rely on the left side… The goal was that the Juve players made a mistake.
And what’s terrible is Pioli’s bad rotation system…you’ll see, Bennacer injured his hand and was only withdrawn in the last minute.

The dependence of Tonnali, Bennacer, Leao and Theo must begin to be reduced, Pioli must begin to trust other players. Buy a lot of players but not optimized for what.
