Player Ratings: AC Milan 4-1 Monza – Diaz show and Origi impresses

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan got the job done against Monza as they managed to find the back of the net four times. Several players did well, especially a couple, and down below are the player ratings for the Rossoneri.

Tatarusanu (6): Questions can be asked about the free-kick (which was very good), but he ended up making a couple of good stops. He also helped set up the first goal with a nice pass to Diaz, showing some passing ability.

Dest (6.5): He was subbed off at half-time as Pioli wanted to try a three-man backline, which was a bit of a shame seeing as he did very well. He beat his man several times and looked a lot more confident.

Kjaer (6): Solid defensive display from the Dane who recently recovered from a hamstring injury. He was eventually subbed off in favour of Gabbia.

Tomori (6.5): Strong and commanding in his defensive plays this evening, not giving the opponents much space with the ball.

Hernandez (7): He continues to be a key for Milan in both phases of the game (especially when Leao isn’t on the pitch) and he was rewarded for all of his runs in the dying minutes. It was unselfish of him to pass, but it was absolutely the right call.

Bennacer (7): He ran the show out there tonight despite having just managed to shake off a fever. He’s so comfortable on the ball and always gives Milan that extra second to set up the attacks.

Pobega (6): He added a physical presence to Milan’s game, no doubt, and it was a solid display even if it wasn’t always technically brilliant.

Messias (6): Some ups and downs from him in this game but he certainly did well in the build-up to Origi’s goal (even if the Belgian needed to do a lot).

Diaz (8 – MOTM): The undisputed man of the match this evening with two brilliant goals to unlock the game. Hopefully, his injury isn’t too serious as Milan could really need him in this form.

Rebic (6): He had a few one-twos with especially Hernandez and he ran a lot, as you would expect. Not much to show for it, though.

Origi (7.5): He was very lively up front and even when he lost a duel, he made up for it with his pace to win back the ball. It was a nice assist for Diaz and the goal was even nicer, certainly showing why Milan signed him this evening.

Substitutes

Kalulu (6): A good defensive display from the youngster but not much more than that.

De Ketelaere (6): He should have scored that last chance but it would be a bit harsh to not give him a pass, as he was forced to play as a striker more or less (and did that decently).

Leao (6): He was actually quite invisible for Milan up until his goal, which really just needed the finish after great work from Theo.

Gabbia (6): Just like Kalulu, a solid display at the back but not much more than that.

Vranckx (N/A): He didn’t play enough to get a rating.

  1. Finally a nice stress free win.
Brahim Diaz came in this game mad because Pioli undeservingly subbed him off at half time vs Verona and had a great game until the injury. Hopefully nothing serious.
Love Giroud, but what a difference a mobile, fast and skilled striker makes up front. Origi had a very good game. Hopefully he will be less selfish in some situations..
Tata made some good saves but that free kick was not good. That’s 2nd time this season he gets beat on free kick because he is so slow reacting..
CDK. His confidence is shut. He needs to score goal really bad and soon. That was awful at the end.
    The rest were good.
Didn’t like the Dest sub. Thought he played good 1st half
Flop of the game, whoever picked the jerseys for both teams. It was painful on the eyes
Let’s get a win vs Dinamo
    Forza Milan

    1. Agreed about Dest. His best game so far. Maybe something happened (fatigue, etc) so that he’s substituted. It’s just not like Pioli, suddenly changing someone who had a decent first half. Just like Calabria vs Napoli who turned out to be injured.

    2. If Origi wasn’t selfish he would be a good player, the issue is he was always like that. That kept him as a bench player his whole career.

  2. 6 for Tata after all those saves plus an assist? Not to mention his passes which started a lot of attacks for us. Clearly not his distribution was the problem, but instead Giroud losing all the physical duels.
I guess we have to take into account the bias against him in these articles.
On another hand, it was good to see Diaz performig, let’s hope he gains some confidence now.

    1. Agree with you. Tata has his limitations, that’s why he is the second GK, but today he had a good game and that free-kick was very good

  3. Diaz’s magic show. But my motm is Divock. 1 assist and 1 goal should show his complete role. How he opened up the space, his speed, strength, are just remarkable. Credit to Monza as well for not playing defensively boring kind of game.

  4. Why take off Dest? The guy was actually the second best player after Diaz. Give him more game time and build his confidence, we’ll need it for the next few months.

    1. He had a slight injury; that’s why Pioli took off Dest.

It was very nice to see him play with confidence; some good dribbling/passing and his defense was better today too. Hopefully we will see a lot more of that level from him that he has done when he played with Barca.

  5. I need to watch the game again because I found Dest wasnt all that. I get why he was subbed tbh. I just don’t trust him in the defence but as a RM or RW I think he’d do great. Tata again was disappointing on the free kick. At that distance you gotta save that. There’s enough time to scout where the ball is going from that distance but his fram is too small and he’s too weak and slow. Yea he got an assist but that’s a clean sheet missed.
I feel bad for CDK, you can tell he’s trying to hard to justify his price tag when he should just forget about it and play with personality and clarity. He has the tool, he just needs to relax.

I think we played a back 3 for like 10 mins and then Gabbia came on. We didn’t look comfortable and there was something missing in the midfield in front of the defence when we switched to the back 3. There was way too much space afforded

  6. Tata is what he is – great instinctual keeper – excellent reflexes. But when he has to use his feet or his head (judging a corner or free kick) that is when his limitations show. But will admit today we had a nice game. I just wouldn’t expect it all the time lol. Origi – finally showed why we signed him. Just needed to get healthy. Excellent speed and hold up play w anexcellent finish to go w his assist. He should be our starter once in full game shape w Giroud saved for CL and big matches. Diaz – what a game. Hope he’s not out long and hope he finally finds some consistency. CDK looks like he has lost all confidence. I’m not sure we should be running him out right now. Expectations too high for this kid and it’s showing. He needs to sit for a while and learn and let the pressure die down. We cannot afford to lose this kid and burn him out. Too much invested. Give him time. Would have like to see Aster a bit earlier and introduction of Thiaw – but the goal conceded seem to have spooked Pioli and he delayed the subs and didn’t use Thiaw at all. All in all a solid “professional” performance by the lads. Well done

  7. Where’s that guy who said Milan can’t build a single attack without Leao? 😂

I think every players played well in this match. Happy to see Origi got his first goal and assist. Sadly CDK didn’t follow with that easy chance from Messias.

Milan needs to play like this against Zagreb. Don’t waste any chance.

  8. Pobega rating too high. He, yet again, had 3 very clumsy/sloppy tackles. He is slow and can’t seem to control his body well. I hope that changes; but it’s been happening over and over with him.

Bennacer continues to be a stud. He consistently wins possession of balls in the air despite being shorter than almost everyone. He’s a beast; great dribbling and tackling. So important to have him boss the middle of the pitch.

  9. Nice, easy e points.
Brahim was awesome today but sadly he got injured. Let’s hope it’s nothing serious and he’ll be ready for Dinamo. He looks waaaay stronger this season, he can keep his balance and doesn’t get pushed around anymore. Let’s hope he continues like this.
Origi, if healthy, needs to be a starter from now on. It’s totally a different problem for defenses with him up front. We all love Giroud but he is 10 years older than Origi. It was refreshing to see Milan striker outrun a defender. And what a strike on the goal.
Messias also had a good game.
Rebic ran a lot but misplaced few passes and he should have scored on that nice Brahim pass.
    Bennacer was nice.
I want Pobega to succeed nut he is so clumsy. He is a walking yellow card .
Dest actually played very good. Beat his man few times.
Tomori and Theo were very good.
Kjaer got lost in the 1st half that led to Monza great chance that Tata saved. Slowly but surely Kjaer should be pushed to the bench and Gabbia, Thiaw should play more.
Tata saved some good shots but that set piece was awful GKeeping. He looked like he was moving in slow mo.
CDK have lost all confidence. Pioli and his teammates needs to be close to him or will have another Gourcuff case. The kid is a great talent, his problem is in his head, the easiest passes and shots are hard for him right now.
At the end I can’t wait for the return game in Monza , where Hopefully both team will play in their white jerseys so we won’t be able to differentiate who is who. That was awful. Milan green jersey vs Monza red kit on a green grass

  10. Diaz MOTM, without any doubts, and I hope his is not too serious, we cannot cope with such a bad luck, fvck…

Very happy with Origi’s display, I hope the man will make me eat my own words!

And about CDK, just one word: patience.

  11. Pobega is useful for rotation and because he’s Italian. If a better, Italian alternative emerges, he’ll be sold. Teams fighting for points need a player like that more than we do. FFS can we not keep a clean sheet? The defence gave up too many chances. Only 6 games left. We get through those and hopefully no injuries at the World clCup and we’ll be ready to push for the scudetto next year. I’d expect Napoli to choke at some stage.

  12. Cdk will be fine. And honestly the club has been very calm and supportive. It’s on him now. The club and coach and most fans are with him, now for the next year or so we’ll see if he can pull it together and have a winners mindset or if he’s a weak minded player who crumbles at the first sign of adversity. Time will tell.

Origi looked decent. Some good plays and now he got his goal I’m hoping he will be less selfish because you can see there’s talent there.

Good game but we can’t glean too much from it monza looked terrible.
