CM: RedBird to strengthen squad in two areas – Vlahovic-style investments may be allowed

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan already have two positions in mind that they will be looking to strengthen in the upcoming transfer windows, according to a report.

Calciomercato.com report that owners Gerry Cardinale and his fund RedBird Capital will continue the good work done by Elliott Management by looking to keep the accounts under control.

However, they also know that they must also spend to invest properly in the squad, thinking about the present as well as the future. A strong Milan must have strong players who are immediate certainties and not just gambles or patient projects.

In order to improve the team that deservedly won the Scudetto, there are two priorities: to reinforce the right wing and to sign reliable goal scorer, given the age of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud plus the uncertainty linked around Divock Origi.

If RedBird were in charge last season then they may have chosen to invest in someone like Vlahovic because the investment would have paid off over time and each opportunity is evaluated on merit when it comes to breaking policy.

  1. bring one big starter player every season and retain the younger talents like Tonali Leao and Tomori etc. One big signing should be good enough per season.

  2. Darwin Nunez was THE missing signing for Milan last season. He is the type of attacker that fits perfectly into Pioli’s style of play. Not many of those number 9s exist in football, so I hope Milan paunches next time one of these talents are available. Julian Alvarez would’ve been a nice investment too btw.

Next season I hope to see a similar attacker join Milan, but I honestly have a hard time thinking of anybody available…

  3. We definently need a right wing as soon as possible Leao gets covered by 2 players while sale and messias can’t even cross or idk how they got into milan the rest can wait till the next season

  4. I dont think in the short term, we have enough revenue to be “sustainable” and also spend €80mn on a Vlahovic level player. So question is…. Who would be the starter RW that we could get next season around the €40mn mark? Let’s assume they would want to come (so no Salah suggestion) and fits in the project (so are under 27 yrs old)

Asensio has been linked but he would be free. Berardi is too old and Chiesa too expensive. Many linked players this summer really split opinions on forums. Any suggestions fellow Rossoneri tifosi?

      1. Just to follow up on that:

Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford, hard team worker in a drilled system.

Marcus Edwards of Sporting Lisbon, English will add resale value.

Amad Diallo – bit more of a flair player but unlikely to break into Man Utd’s team with Antony and Sancho. Is Italian, so qualifies as home grown for UEFA.

  5. For winger prefer Cody Gakpo from Ajax,he have excellent vision and great pass for winger, fits for Giroud and target man I choose Jonathan David from Lille

        1. Rebic is not an RW. Origi can play RW but is not natural RW. With your transfer formula, Milan will be severely undermanned at RW as Origi need to also play as CF. There will also be overabundance of LW. Very unbalanced team and lack of depth.

          1. Seeing how badly Junior and Saladmaker plays someone needs to play RW, Dest, Origin or CDk , since MIlan management did not address or fix the RW, its time to give someone a trial at RW

          2. There is always an option no to use winger since Milan is stockpiling DM, MC and AMC.. can go with 4-4-2 diamonds like Ancelotti’s era

      1. RW that is not doing the work of a RW, is that one RW?
They don’t have positions, they just run round the field and play anywhere, that’s why pioli would say they versatile players, the can play in multiple positions.

    1. If you get rid of O. Giroud that gives you guarantee on the goal scoring and you bring in someone you called a starter then I see you talking as a fan.

      1. Giroud, Ibrahmiovic, Dest, Vranckx and Diaz are out of contract anyway or end of their loans anyway, as are both backup goalkeepers, so they’ll all likely be on their way.

TBH, Milan’s end of season window is going to be about replacing rather than upgrading.

        1. What if Dest turns out to be another Theo? Similiar circumstance, skill level and price at the time of acquisition to make the move permanent. Dest, like Theo when he first arrived, needs to improve defensively, but it is Italy, so I expect this to happen. Could be a brilliant move for only 20m. Same price we paid for Theo who is now worth at least 80m (Hakimi as a comparable) and is one of the team’s stars.

  6. All we need it a top RW, a top young striker who already has a goalscoring record and finally, hate to say it, but after those two starting positions, RB is next up for an upgrade. I love Cala, but as the squad’s level has gone up, he’s beginning to be left behind. This is why the Dest loan is a great move. We get to take a look at a talented RWB and will “only” need 20m to make it permanent if he proves to be another Theo.

  7. I’m prefer not to go Vlahovic’s Style at mercato. Our current mercato is good enough.

This season, we hope the improvement of Saelemaekers’ performances because we give the team proper AMC (CDK) that should improve ball distribution to RW too, not only LW.
That’s why Maldini keep Alexis & Messias at RW this season. If this season Alexis still not improve his game, i think he will go elsewhere next season & we will see big transfer at RW.
