Refereeing inconsistency demonstrated in Beukema and Gimenez incidents – video

AC Milan lost 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma, and one of the sour notes was the red card given to Santiago Gimenez.

Admittedly, Gimenez was a bit naive to swing an elbow into the chest of Gianluca Mancini, with the ball far away and the defender being someone who was always going to go down and make the most of the contact.

The referee Piccinini was called to the VAR screen and took out the red card for the Mexican, in the 21st minute. However, what has angered Milan fans is that for the exact same foul on Matteo Gabbia in the Coppa Italia final, the Bologna defender Beukema was not sanctioned.

The referee Mariani was not even called to the VAR screen. It is clear that the error was committed on Wednesday and not this evening, but it was a bitter note on a bitter night.

  1. Gimenez elbow is much worse. clearly in back play with no reason for the contact except frustration.
The Bologna incident was two players jostling before the ball was delivered.
Level of contact is similar but only one player has an excuse for it happening.

    1. Why waste time with stuff that is now ‘bleak history’, since the cravna zvedza game we have been out of it and that is that.

Is cardinal going to swallow this and try and invest and try and build or is he going to cash in on stars (will not get half of what their worth at present) and take us back to the days of the Kevin Constant Era (such a clever naming by me…don’t you think)

    2. That is the opposite of the truth. The Bologna’s player definitely had more elbow swing and momentum. Meanwhile, Roma’s player clearly exaggerated the contact shown by his delayed reaction.

      1. And it’s clear youre a fake fan. Go cry in you moms basement and order mcdonalds because your nothing but a wannabe

    3. it’s not really a surprise though, what Giminez did was silly I don’t think it was a red card but he definitely deserved yellow but we have been getting bad ref decisions since the season of the scudetto win, we were basically playing against refs aswel.

    4. Watching both incidents again I think ultimately neither incident should be a red card. Gimenez was silly to react and there is no reason for him to make that contact. However the contact is minimal and Mancini is chronically overacting in his response. Meanwhile Gimenez joins in on the acting out of desperation to maybe be able to save himself.

VAR officials should be able to look at that and instead give both players a yellow. Gimenez for stupidity and Mancini for simulation.

The Bologna player does make a more forceful contact. But do you really want that level of contact went two players are jostling for position to result in a red card?

The state of these contact incidents in modern football is getting pathetic. How many times to do you see an attacking player have to hand over the ball because they try and protect space with their arm and defender detects the slightest touch near the shoulder and they drop like they have been punched in the face.

  2. Only Milan fans could ever cry about this…

Deservedly sent off and should be sold immediately. Waste of 35ML.

  3. I think not having core Italians in our team is why referees in Italy officiate against us al the time. I may be wrong though.
