Reijnders makes reassuring declaration: “I see myself at Milan until I’m in my thirties’

Tijjani Reijnders has admitted a desire to play for many years with AC Milan, and insisted that the squad feel they are still in the Scudetto battle.

After the Netherlands’ 4-0 win over Hungary, Gianluca Di Marzio interviewed Reijnders in the mixed zone of the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. The midfielder – who has already amassed four goals and three assists in Serie A and the Champions League – touched on a number of topics.

“I’m happy that Holland qualified for the quarter-finals of the Nations League, it’s a great feeling. Now Bosnia and then the attention will shift back to Milan: we have to improve in the league, I’m confident for the match against Juve,” he began.

After two defeats against Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen, the Rossoneri redeemed themselves by beating Club Brugge first and then Real Madrid in the Champions League. Slovan Bratislava, Red Star, Girona and Dinamo Zagreb remain, so optimism has been somewhat restored.

“In the Champions League we have our destiny in our hands, but our goal is to finish in the top eight. The only way to do that is by winning matches,” Reijnders added.

Eight is also the number points that separates Milan from league leaders Napoli, even if there is a game in hand against Bologna, but the former AZ Alkmaar man does not believe the title charge is over.

“I don’t think it’s too late for the Scudetto. There are few teams in a few points. Milan is evolving as a team and things will improve.”

Reijnders signed a five-year contract until 2028 when he moved from AZ Alkmaar to Milan last summer, but he confirmed that a renewal is being talked about amid rumours of interest from abroad.

“We are discussing the renewal at the moment but I can’t say more. However, I see myself at Milan until I’m in my thirties. It’s one of the most beautiful clubs in the world and it’s an honour to play there. Wearing Cruijff’s number 14 shirt is very special and I’m happy at Milan.”

  1. luckily for us we didn’t get him at a younger age. He’ll be hitting his prime in Milan colors and I hope it’s a sight to behold if he continues to develop and display the level of consistency that he has shown.
