Tuttosport: Renewal situation and performances see Leao’s valuation drop sharply

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are struggling in 2023 having already lost seven games across all competitions, and those difficulties extend to Rafael Leao who is experiencing a goal drought.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) talks about the situation linked to the Portuguese winger, recalling that last summer Milan negotiated with Chelsea – albeit very briefly – and turned down an offer worth over €100m for Leao from the Premier League side.

Their belief was that Leao was too important to lose and that in the coming months the management would find an agreement over the renewal of his contract, but that renewal has not yet come and now Leao is seeing his market value drop below triple digits because of his form.

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara were convinced that in the event he did not extend his deal before the 2023 summer window they could sell him for €100m, yet if his form continues like this it will be more like €70-80m with 15% of that going to Lille as per the resale clause.

  1. To think we could have had Kvaratskhelia on the left and slobazslai on the right for a combined £35m and let Kessie go for bumping his pay a bit more if only for the fact of selling him for a profit.

  2. 70-80 mil is good enough for a player who only has 1-year contract left. And Lille holding 15% resale value without them being held with any kind of responsibility for the Leao’s famous fine is a weird a** kind of business.

  3. Leao with 1 year left on his contract is worth no more than 30m.
So either Milan pay what sporting are owed and renew his contract with a 100m buyout clause, or,
they take what they can get in summer.

I know what I would do, but logic does not seem to apply to AC Milan anymore

    1. 30m, in this era, are you insane? Leao isnt a 30 year old forward looking for a last chance to shine or have you forgotten he is 23?

      1. Perhaps you did’nt understand my comment. I’m not saying Leao is a 30m player, what I am saying is with 1 year left on his contract, thats about his value.
So if we sign him up to a new deal we could get 100m for him.

As every year we see high class players move for small fees when their contract is run down. Thats why we offered 10m for renato sanches and not 50m.
Otherwise we risk losing him for free, which every club understands.
It’s basic arithmetic based on a players value, length left on his contract and amortisation.

So a 150m player on a 5 year contract , his amortisation is 30m per year. therefore if he has 1 year left he is worth 30m. Now i don’t believe Leao is a 150m player.
Also there is nothing to stop clubs over paying for a player due to competition for his signature

  4. “turned down an offer worth over €100m for Leao from the Premier League side.”

LOL. Every single source says it was 70M€ and last time I checked 70M€ is less than 100M€ – not over.

    1. Exactly, other clubs are not stupid. Leao had 2 years left on his contract in summer which means 70m was more than fair offer.
We’ll be offered half that this summer when he has 1 year left

      1. “We’ll be offered half that this summer when he has 1 year left”

Yep. That’s the reality. People who dream about 100M€ will have a rough awakening coming… 😀
