Report: Chelsea open talks over €50m Milan star after failing to sign first choice target

By Oliver Fisher -

Chelsea have opened talks with Mino Raiola over a possible deal for AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, a report claims.

Milan face a race against time regarding the future of Donnarumma as his contract expires at the end of the 2020-21 season, meaning that he is within a year of being able to leave on a free transfer.

Although every major media outlet is claiming that Milan will soon sit down for talks with his agent Mino Raiola over a renewal, that hasn’t stopped clubs showing interest.

Football Insider are claiming that Chelsea have turned their attention to Donnarumma after difficulties in signing Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

The Blues want to sign a new number one this summer after splashing out on the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Ben Chilwall and are exploring various options across Europe.

Frank Lampard is looking to offload Kepa Arrizabalaga and bring in a new keeper, and while Chelsea apparently know it’s a ‘long shot’ to land the €50m-rated Donnarumma, they are giving it a try and have opened talks, presumably with agent Mino Raiola.

  1. I can pretty much guarantee that this is not correct unless donnarumma has asked to leave the club. Why is that ? clubs cant just start negotiating with players or agents unless the owning club allows them to do so. Only way buying clubs can do that is if they make an offer that is accepted or the owning club allows them to do that or if a buying club meet the demands of a release clause or the player is within the last half a year of his contract. Starting to negotiate over the heads of an owning club is not allowed and will be penalized and as milan seemingly is still in the plans to keep donnarumma as he is seen as instrumental in our future plans i can pretty much say this claim is not correct and even if it is both raiola and chelsea can expect some hefty fines or even getting banned. donnarumma could potentially also be in truble if he started to take such road without milans permision.

    1. @Martin

This is precisely why players have agents. Speaking to the agent about the player’s wage demands does not contravene any laws or rules.

Speaking with the player directly, like Mourinho did with Ashley Cole, is against the football by-laws.

There is every reason to believe Chelsea have contacted the player’s agent as the story claims.

      1. I dont agree Arthur ,if a club is interested in donnarumma and then starts negotiating with the agent without our consent which is safe to assume milan hasnt given yet its not ok. They need to meet certain criterias like i said above otherwise it would be working behind our backs. Raiola on the other hand might do some shit like that but if caught surely he will be penalized. Theres a reason why we have contracts and that is both to protect clubs investments and for that matter protect players if they for example endup with career ending injuries.

        1. You agree or not is your issue. Chelsea FC did what it is allowed to do. If not AC Milan would have come out by now against Chelsea FC.

  2. I think Chelsea have not made any mistake by speaking to Donnaruma’s agent first. It would have been a great mistake if they contact the player himself without the consent of the club.

    1. Problem is though then chelsea pretty much could talk to the agent and say they want to offer him a contract next summer where they pay him an insane ammount of money like for example 20-25 mil a year but only if he lets his contract run its course and thereby slimming our reneval chances to next to none. In a lesser problematic scenario it could also be used to give the player an unrealistically high salary just on the grounds of what an agent may concoct of a story. You simply cant do that. When we signed honda there was rumours we had agreed a contract with him before he entered his last half a year of contract and cska moscow wasnt exactly happy about that either from what i can recollect so no i dont agree either.

  3. Am a die hard chelsea fan from kampala uganda east africa, donnaramma is a great keeper but its going to be a tough deal, lets first complete kai’s deal before we think of gool keeping. Then these players have to be well motivated by the coach frank,to learn to fight for the club like JT and drogs, lamps did.
