Report: Milan, Newcastle ruled out of race for 121-goal striker; Chelsea a concrete option

By Oliver Fisher -

Napoli striker Dries Mertens is not interested in the idea of a summer move to AC Milan despite rumours of an agreement being close.

Earlier on Monday a report emerged from Spain claiming Milan are in advanced talks with the entourage of Mertens and an announcement could arrive next week.

Then it was confirmed on Tuesday by La Stampa that the Rossoneri are in talks with the Belgium international, who turned 33 on Wednesday.

According to Thursday’s edition of il Corriere del Mezzogiorno though, Mertens is not interested in a move to Milan as he is looking to move to a club that can immediately compete at a high level.

Milan are therefore an option to be discarded, as well as Newcastle and Monaco, while the paper claims that Inter, Chelsea and PSG are more concrete possibilities, as well as a renewal with Napoli.

Mertens – who has 121 goals and 73 assists for Napoli in 311 games across all competitions (via Transfermarkt) – wishes to play in the Champions League at the very least.
