Report: Milan watching on as Roma defender could leave on a free transfer

Chris Smalling is yet to reach an agreement with Roma over a contract renewal and the tension is seemingly rising in the Italian capital. As he could end up leaving for free, AC Milan are watching on.

According to today’s edition of Il Messaggero, as cited by SempreMilan.it, Roma have not yet been successful in the negotiations with Smalling over a new contract. There is a one-year renewal clause in the current deal, but the Englishman doesn’t seem interested.

Instead, he’s asking for a two-year deal and also wants a better salary than the one he currently has (€3.5m per year). Roma are increasingly worried and would not want to lose him on a free transfer, but an agreement might not be reached.

Milan are keeping tabs on the situation, as per the newspaper, after having made an inquiry last summer. At the age of 33, he doesn’t fit the project perfectly and Milan have also enjoyed the impressive growth of Malick Thiaw recently.
