Report: Pioli ‘annoyed’ by Kjaer and Musacchio situation – Gabbia could get first start

By Oliver Fisher -

Matteo Gabbia could be in line for his first Serie A start as an AC Milan player in Saturday’s game against Fiorentina, a report claims.

In the 44th minute of Monday night’s 1-0 win over Torino, head coach Stefano Pioli was forced into an early change though as Gabbia came on for his Serie A debut, replacing Simon Kjaer who landed awkwardly when clearing a ball for a corner.

Reports emerged during the game that Mateo Musacchio – who would have been the preferred option to replace Kjaer due to his experience – refused to come on.

Pioli then revealed in his post-match interview that the Argentine refused to enter after declaring that he has a problem in his calf. The coach, visibly annoyed, did not think twice and called Gabbia who ended up having a great game.

So with Kjaer and now Musacchio both struggling with muscle discomfort – injuries that tend to be handled carefully to prevent aggravation – MilanLive are reporting that Pioli may turn to Gabbia again.

They are claiming that the fitness of the aforementioned duo will be monitored between now and Saturday’s trip to Florence, but that the head coach would not have any issues giving Gabbia his first senior start.
