Reports: Maldini to scout €25m Celtic star first hand as Milan boss Pioli confirms interest

By Oliver Fisher -

Kristoffer Ajer will face off against AC Milan for Celtic on Thursday night but it could have been a very different story, according to reports.

As MilanLive notes, the Rossoneri were heavily linked with a move for Ajer throughout the summer transfer window and he could well have been lining up against Celtic tonight rather than facing the Rossoneri.

On the eve of the game Milan boss Stefano Pioli was asked if there had been an interest in Ajer, to which he responded in the affirmative.

“We followed him, yes, but then other choices were made and now I’m very happy with who’s there,” he said.

Tonight directors Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara will see Ajer in person and the Norwegian will be motivated to play against what could have been his new team.

Given that Milan did not end up signing a new centre-back in the summer window a January return for Ajer cannot be excluded, but Celtic are determined to get €25m for the 22-year-old.

Thursday’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) also comments on Ajer, claiming that Maldini will be paying special attention to him and that a move to Italy seems to be his ‘destiny’.
