The investigation into the conduct of the two Milanese ultras groups the Curva Sud and the Curva Nord is continuing, and Davide Calabria had his turn to speak yesterday.
As reported by ANSA (via Calciomercato.com), the investigation into the two groups – conducted by the Squadra Mobile and coordinated by prosecutors Paolo Storari and Sara Ombra – keeps going which two weeks ago led to 19 arrests. We explained the situation in full in a recent Substack feature.
Calabria was questioned yesterday regarding the contents of documents that include a meeting that took place in the early months of 2023 between the captain and Luca Lucci, the leader of the Milan ultras and among those arrested in the investigation.
During the investigation, ‘a meeting was documented’ between Luca Lucci, leader of the Milan ultras and among those arrested in the investigation, ‘with the captain of Milan, the footballer Davide Calabria’, in a bar in Cologno Monzese, on 8 February 2023.
However, the documents do not report the content of this alleged meeting, but it is noted, on the basis of the interceptions, that Lucci was ‘cryptically informed’ by Giancarlo Capelli, known as ‘Il Barone’ and historic leader of the Rossoneri ultras, ‘of the arrival shortly thereafter’ of a ‘subject who was supposed to meet him’, without revealing the name.
Based on ‘the images captured by the investigators it is believed that it is possible to assert that the subject in question, indicated in the telephone conversation mentioned above, although with unmistakably cryptic content, is to be identified as Davide Calabria, footballer and captain of Milan’.
According to Sportface meanwhile, Calabria explained to investigators that he had been contacted by Lucci to talk about ‘the team’s problems, the dressing room and performance’, and they talked about these issues.
Il Corriere della Sera adds that Calabria denied to investigators that he had been contacted and/or threatened to satisfy any requests for tickets for Milan matches. The Rossoneri captain also stated that he did not know how Lucci got his phone number and that he had not informed the club of the meetings with the ultras.
How is this controversial?
Because Ultras are legally not allowed to meet up with Players or Coaches/Management in private.
‘Legally’?
