Repubblica: De Zerbi on Milan’s list of potential Pioli replacements amid takeover talk

By Oliver Fisher -

Stefano Pioli’s position as the head coach of AC Milan is under threat, and the management are already thinking about potential successors from next summer.

According to today’s edition of La Repubblica (via PianetaMilan), Piol is at risk of being sacked due to the inconsistency in results and the injury crises, but they do not have a name ready to replace him immediately.

The first step could be to intervene regarding his staff, changing one or two figures, but the possibility of having to replace Pioli too is far from unlikely any more. Roberto De Zerbi, the current manager of Brighton in the Premier League, is on their list.

Publicly praised by Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, De Zerbi is destined for great things and many at Milan would be happy to bet on him. De Zerbi’s name is also very popular with the Arab fund who are said to be in negotiations to buy the Rossoneri.

The fear, when his name is mentioned, is that De Zerbi imagines a long-term future in the Premier League because of the level and the exposure that comes from being a head coach in England.

It won’t be easy to convince him to move essentially, but De Zerbi came through the Milan youth academy and he has previously admitted that he still feels an attachment to the Rossoneri and to Italy as well.

Then because the Diavolo have the charm of their history, present ambitions and probably – with the Arabic takeover – also the liquidity for an ambitious mercato.

    1. So? Let this be the last one. These americans have taken us as far as we could go with them. They dont have the money or the competens. The Arabs have proven themselfs to be good committed owners were ever they have been. And they have the Cash to make us compete on all fronts again. Its a no brainer

  1. I like De Zerbi and it would be great if Milan can get him, but for me Motta has overtaken him, when it come who would I rather have.
With De Zerbi Milan will play attractive, possession based, attacking football but he lacks in terms of defensive set up. His defense has always been suspect. That maybe attributed to the quality of the defenders at his disposal but still.
Motta’s team on the other hand doesn’t score that much but defensively they are very solid. Only 12 goals given up in 17 games. Inter and Juventus have given up less goal then them.
His team offensive output can also be because he lacks offensive talent. I mean his left winger is Alexis Saelemaekers.
Either one of them is better option than Pioli.

      1. The most important thing is to hand over the team to a young coach, but De Zebri would be idle, with him even with Redbird we can go places, with the take over even better, if the take over happens, then the new management should continue to concentrate on young players , with a preference for Italian players, the lack of an Italian core is one of the issues we face, if Milan was to come for him, he would ditch Brighton in an instant, the honour , prestige , history and power of Milan is too big to ignore, even with Redbird we are on very stable ground, but new faces on the management level are needed, Furlani should stick to the money aspect, allow Moncada to continue his work, then appoint a general manager who will strictly be responsible for the sporting side, we could also try getting a VP who will also have power to oversee both aspects of the club, someone like Gandini who is known domestically and in Europe, just look at Inters’s management structure…

        1. The only problem this team has is the coach, injuries and badlick, but player for player, Milan is better, Brighton is lucky simply because they have a modern coach who understands football

      1. Many coaches don’t necessarly coach/train their childhood teams. Heck pioli is apparently an interesita and has won a scudetto against them.

  2. What are the chances of him winning a title in England with Brighton? Come to Milan for 5 years and actually win titles. He can then return to England at a higher calibre. It works the same way it does for player. He is only 44, 15 years younger than Pioli.

  3. We still got into super league though lol. If we don’t paid the fine, we might sell Maignan and Theo just to cover it 😂😂😂

  4. Here we go with the coaching carousel rumors… Let’s throw EVERY name at the wall and see which one sticks, then we’ll say “you read it here first” LOL!!!

The real question is, who’s gonna want to take over this dumpster fire we have on our hands 🙂 DeZerbi? Conte? Motta? Furlani certainly won’t be spending big again in the summer unless a big name is sold off.

I bet no one will even consider touching this team now with all the injuries and mental frailty.

    1. They are obviously talking about De zerbi or Motta in the summer and not now.
Also which “big” name doesn’t deserve to be sold off.
The production and the performances that the “big names” give Milan can be replaced with players bought for less money and on cheaper salaries.
      Danielle Adani:
“Pioli has been betrayed by his bigs: Maignan is making big mistakes, Theo is no longer the one of two years ago. But the most striking case is Leao: he’s the highest paid in Serie A but his performance is not up to scratch.
Leao is not justifying the wage he gets nor the market he seemed to have. However, you must explain to me why Chelsea take Mudryk and City take Doku and don’t go for Leao”.

  5. The most important thing is to hand over the team to a young coach, but De Zebri would be idle, with him even with Redbird we can go places, with the take over even better, if the take over happens, then the new management should continue to concentrate on young players , with a preference for Italian players, the lack of an Italian core is one of the issues we face, if Milan was to come for him, he would ditch Brighton in an instant, the honour , prestige , history and power of Milan is too big to ignore, even with Redbird we are on very stable ground, but new faces on the management level are needed, Furlani should stick to the money aspect, allow Moncada to continue his work, then appoint a general manager who will strictly be responsible for the sporting side, we could also try getting a VP who will also have power to oversee both aspects of the club, someone like Gandini who is known domestically and in Europe, just look at Inters’s management structure…their is a Chief operating officer coprate, and a Chief operating officer sporting, that way everybody knows his role, Scaroni is still very useful, he is experienced and competent, he can still oversee the whole club, but having some just below him like Gandini as an executive VP, looking at both the coprate and sporting side would be better, Furlani is not experienced in handling the sporting side, let Moncada and the sporting director continue to do their work, but they should have a general manager who understands football above them controlling them, juat the way we had Braida in the past.

  6. Only in milan fans dream to take these coaches. They are big salary at this moment. Conte and de zerbi already have some big money on his account. The ideal replacement for this moment only motta and italiano. But they want it to joinr milan?? I dont think so…

  7. I don’t believe in this overtake talk.. How many Italian clubs got linked to it, it’s just not attractive for Saudi owners. They will 100% go to the Prem and be able to actually spend big
