Repubblica: Milan explored idea of hiring Djokovic – the background

By Oliver Fisher -

The winter transfer window has now closed and will reopen in the summer, but three months ago the club were in talks over the addition of Novak Djokovic.

According to what is being reported by La Repubblica (via Calciomercato.com) Milan’s ownership group RedBird Capital thought about hiring Djokovic, one of the best tennis players of all time, to be among the personal consultants of Gerry Cardinale.

What role did they have in mind? He was seen as a potential mental coach a motivator for the team which at that moment was experiencing a moment of great difficulty but which now – also thanks to the victory at Frosinone – seems to have been overcome.

Djokovic is of course a big Milan fan and personal friend of Cardinale, and he had been identified as the ideal potential collaborator, albeit sporadically rather than a full-time role.

Cardinale has repeatedly made it clear that he sees a mix between football and entertainment as being the future. Zlatan Ibrahimovic himself – brought back to the club as his personal consultant – has kept the door open to collaborations.

The RedBird No.1 works hand in hand with stars of the caliber of LeBron James and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. Djokovic could have become the latest, but a partnership did not materialise due to his busy schedule.
