Repubblica: Milan eye Georgia striker who is top scorer at Euro 2024

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have set their sights on striker Georges Mikautadze, a report claims, who is currently the surprise leader of the goalscoring charts at the European Championship.

According to what is being reported by La Repubblica, Milan have Mikautadze on their list of striker targets and they are having to explore other options compared to those who were priority targets.

Romelu Lukaku is very close to joining Antonio Conte’s Napoli as per the report, whilst the Joshua Zirkzee deal remains at a stalemate. Milan are willing to pay the clause and have an agreement on salary, but will not give his agent Kia Joorabchian the €15m requested in commissions.

Thus, Georgia hero Mikautadze is being evaluated and the forward managed three goals and one assist in three group games at Euro 2024, helping his nation qualify for the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time ever.

However, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Monaco have reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the 23-year-old striker. Not only that, but they have also sent a proposal to Metz in order to agree on the fee.

They are trying to beat the competition from other clubs which continues to grow as he turns heads on the big stage, and the Ligue 1 side want to get a deal done before end of the tournament.

It was actually reported last summer by Footmercato that Milan were keen on the FC Metz forward, with a €10m bid having been tabled and Paolo Maldini having spoken to the player, who ended up staying.

  1. Is it even possible? Mikutadze is still technically owned by Ajax, and he has agreed on a transfer to Metz which will happen in 3 days from now (1st July), and according to Fifa rules player can’t switch club twice in a season. This feels a bit odd.

But anyways, guy was not good enough for Ajax just few months ago – and Ajax had a worst season in years – and suddenly he will get to be Milan’s top gunner, because he scored few goals in Ligue 1? Nah

    1. He isnt owned by Ajax, Metz bought him out. Hard to be good player if you only have 6-7 games of the bench and not at your natural position. As soon as returned to France he scored 13 goals in half season and also had 3-4 assists. Besides Ajax was trash this season. Total chaos.

      1. I think you are too harsh on him. Metz was trash, I’ve been on his case for about 2 years (I support a club that plays in France’s second division). He is a talented player but imo he is not quite there yet to reach Milan’s Level. Monaco and Lyon are trying to sign him as Metz is going back down. I think we should keep him on our “to-follow list”.

In 2 years let’s see where his career goes.

      2. @Lakers yeah mate but answer yourself a question why he only got few games from bench – he was not good enough in trainings comparing to other players. And in half year Ajax had 2 coaches and still he wasn’t playing and they decided to let him go, so 2 different coaches evaulated him as not good enough. I actually support Ajax (besides Milan) and nobody here is really crying that he was let go, everyone already forgot about him.

I’m not saying he will never be a quality player based on the fact that he failed at Ajax, but it really feels off that just few months ago he failed here and now he is considered to be No.9 of Milan, where there are way bigger expectations, pressure and football quality needed to fill Giroud’s shoes.

  2. Good player, has potential. Scores a lot in League 1 and National team , but now he would cost around 25-30. As Georgian would be more than happy to see him in Milan uniform.

    1. Well, technically he scored only 13 goals in Ligue1 in his career, so it’s not really a lot. Had a good 6 months, true, but that’s all so far. Before he scored quite a lot with Metz – but in Ligue2 – which is (no offence) not really a serious football. With National also his goals come from matches against Gibraltar, Cyprus, Montenegro or Thailand so again not really a serious footbal either.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he won’t be a good baller or that these goals don’t count (he scored them and that is something), but I wouldn’t brag too much about scoring in National, where he scored against amateur teams…

  3. We can’t get him . He is close to join AS Monaco.
    PS to Ronaldinho.
I think that Metz had him on loan with obligation or option to buy which isn’t a permanent transfer . And it’s been 2year loan so I think because of that Metz can get him and then sell him to AS Monaco. So we can’t get him.
Also can I ask something Jonathan David has the same height as him why we don’t sign him instead? Like they were saying that they want supposedly a 1,90cm+ as a first striker it’s kinda weird tbh don’t you think?

    1. According to transfermarkt David is taller than Mikhautadze – 1.80 m vs 1.76 m.

I think David is safer bet, he is around same age, taller, and around same price. And Lille will need to sell as he is on last year of contract and we have good relation with Lille. David also know Fonseca so won’t be hard to adapt to his playstyle, unlike Mikhautadze that was failed at Ajax.

      1. So George has more goals and assists than David in the same league, while playing much weaker team, that was one of the lowest scoring teams in the league. and as I’ve said Ajax was a mess this season. Technical director that bought Mikautadze was fired and coach didn’t approve this transfer and didn’t gave him a chance. Some games of the bench playing at N10 position, which Mikautadze is not.

        1. No he doesn’t lol check again. Mikautadze has 13 and David has 19 goals in Ligue 1 so…. Last time I checked 19 is bigger number than 13 by 6 goals so yh David is way better and taller so let’s sign him up instead of this

  4. He has 3 goals and 1 assist in Euro, but 2 of his 3 goals were penalties…

He has 13 goals in 20 matches for Metz, but 4 of them were penalties. But that’s for a club that was struggling and relegated. That’s a plus.

He is decent striker, and, don’t get me wrong, a good penalty taker is something that is great to have, but he is relatively untested in big club. Moreover, he is small for Striker at 1.76 cm (4 cm shorter than Jonathan David)… So not exactly someone that will be able to win a lot of aerial duels.

    1. I agree, he puts some goals here and there, but so far he didn’t really experience much serious football (played in Ligue2 or scored some goals in National, but – no offence – playing with quite poor team against Thailand, Cyprus, Gibraltar etc). He got a chance at bigger club (Ajax) and he failed. Maybe some day, step after step, like getting stable position in Monaco and scoring there on regular basis, he will get to the point where he will be a good European striker, but it just doesn’t feel like he will be able to join Milan and be better than even Jovic or Okafor, not to mention Giroud from year ago.

  5. 23 years old with good scoring record for a weak team and small country. Impressive if ask me. Worth a punt with plenty of upside and little downside. His compatriot was signed by Napoli for 10m, he is now worth +100m. We should take a punt on him.

  6. He would be perfect addition to an attacking front! So much better than the other “candidates”. Metz got relegated, so it is time to get him right about now; preferably today.

    Mikautadze + Mamardashvili + Zirkzee.

  7. Ajax didn’t play him in his prefered position – CF, and when he didn’t have trust, he lost confidence. Going back to Metz, he had a great season, scoring almost a goal a game for one of the worst teams in Ligue 1. Overall he scored 13 goals in 20 ligue 1 game. And whats extraordinary is that he either scored or assisted 70% of Metz goals in Ligue 1, when he was on the pitch. This is a very high number. Mbappe is around 40% for PSG.

On Euros, from 4 Georgia goals he scored 3 (2 were penalties) and assisted 1. He is also among the top dribblers in this Euro with 7 successful dribbles.

That said, he is much more comfortable in counter-attacking team, than in position oriented team. One of the reasons he flopped in Ajax.
