Repubblica: Pioli’s successor could change due to takeover rumours – the details

By Ben Dixon -

Speculation about the ownership of AC Milan has grown in recent weeks, and if these rumours came to fruition, the decisions regarding Stefano Pioli’s successor could be altered.

Recently, there has been a growing amount of rumours about the level of investment into Milan. Since December, it has been reported that Gerry Cardinale has been seeking investment from the Middle East and the United States of America with the plan to pay off the vendor loan owed to Elliott Management.

However, there has been speculation about the potential acquisition of a majority stake in the club by the Saudia Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the last few weeks. Although it is understood this is not something Cardinale is considering, the Fund are interested.

La Repubblica (via PianetaMilan) have reported that managerial options could change drastically if a takeover were to occur. It is believed that there is interest in taking over the club from America and the Middle East, and this could change plans regarding the Rossoneri’s next manager.

If the club is taken over, Antonio Conte would be the likely successor, Repubblica suggests. However, there are suggestions that Jurgen Klopp could also be a target should any investment occur. Alongside these two names, Thiago Motta, Raffaele Palladino and Roberto De Zerbi are all listed as names of interest.

  1. Conte or Klopp would be great. Everyone else is a big risk. We need a coach who is a serial winner. Motta, Di Zerbi and everyone else are no better options than Pioli unless we decide we want to be a mid table team.

  2. Isn’t the collateral on the vendor loan is in an of itself the club? …so basically Elliot can reacquire the club if it isn’t paid back. Am I correct here?

    1. Yes, just like with Li, if Cardinale doesn’t repay the loan, Elliott can repossess again. At least that’s what it sound like to me.

      1. In this vendor loan scheme, the amount Elliot can reposses is equal in value to the loan which is below 50% of the share so Cardinale can keep majority. Li Yonghong did not use this scheme hence he lost all share.

  3. Sure, Elliott are not looking to sell to someone wealthy. They are vulture fund and are looking for people who have more ambitions than money or people who need a laundry service. They’ll eventually pull a Yonghong Li on Cardinale. It was never possible to repay the loan on deadline with this interest rate.

  4. Indeed, but it seems this only works if the club’s value increases every time they repossess the club, otherwise they lose money since they depend on the increase value to cover the increasing size of the loan. Li bought the club for 740m, with 300m as a loan from Elliott. Elliott then repoed the club (equity of roughly 440m) to satisfy its loan. They then sold the club to Redbird for 1.2bn, with 590m being the loan. So they’d have to sell for at least that if not a bit more to make their scheme work, but it seems the club’s value has hit a ceiling at about 1.4bn for the moment. Increase in asset value (players) will be marginal, unless we somehow produce another 3-4 Leaos. The only way to really increase the club’s value now is to build a stadium, something that requires investment and management, which Elliott won’t do. So while their scheme may just work one more time with Redbird, I don’t see them being able to do it again if they then sell the club for 1.4bn to a next owner who doesn’t have any more funds than Redbird does. Thus, the next owner would have to be someone/or something that is wealthy enough to not have to rely on a vendor loan.

  5. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    Click bait.

  6. One more thing, in case PIF really are interested in acquiring Milan – how would that work when they already own Newcastle. Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest should both clubs qualify for same competition like CL?

  7. Honestly if the Saudi’s buy the club that’ll be it for me.

    Berlusconi was bad enough politically but I was young and at least he wasn’t a fascist.

    Saudi Arabia is one of the most evil empires on the planet.

    – it’s a dictatorship and fundamentally opposed to democracy and human right;
    – it’s one of the leading sources of fossil fuels and climate change disinformation;
    – it’s supporting genocide in Gaza and other atrocities;
    – it’s an apartheid state where women and minorities are openly discriminated against,

    and it’s using sportwashing to cover up these facts.

    I can’t in good conscience continue supporting AC Milan if they acquire us. It’d be like supporting a club that is owned by the Nazis.

      1. Sorry explain how it’s not an apartheid state where women are denied basic rights and most other minority groups are banned?

    1. wow…whole wonkeness in One place, Bro you consume to much of main stream media or your source of information the celebrities?

    2. The 4 points you mentioned are correct.
      However it’s not like the US, or most western goverments for that matter are much better concerning point 2 and especially point 3. The US has a much better domestic policy than Saudi Arabia (which is a low ceiling honestly) but is pretty much as bad or worse in the foreign policy departement and climate change department.
      By the way a lot of things can also be said about China in this regard.
      Now you can say, and you would be correct, than being owned by an american company doesn’t make you a supporter of US policies, while being owned by a KSA company (or any other company from the gulf countries honestly) pretty much makes one complicit in their countries policies.
      But how does Red Bird stands in all of this ?

  8. Everyone should be praying we are sold to the PIF and them bringing us KLOPP. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

      1. if thats true , then for sure your attitude and comments shows you are nazi .. you have right to express your woke nonesense … why the heck you have problem when someone else says something against your comments, if your a cry baby and cant handle difference of opinion then dont comment..
        This the f… problem with the left, they talk about virtue signalling but they cant handle people who have different opinion then others BUT THEY EXPECT OTHERS TO ACCEPT THERE NONESENSE. Grow up !!

      2. LOLOLOLO….wow what an educated and mature comment. How long did it take you to come up with that one son?? LOL. Aside from an insult – why should we not want PIF to buy our club? Curious as to your reasoning @Ian? Or is that you @Boulden lol

  9. But unlike Li, in this vendor loan scheme, the amount Elliot can reposses is equal in value to the loan which is below 50% of the share so Cardinale can keep majority.

  10. Klopp have been very clear about him taking a little break from football, we’d have to wait a couple of years, if any of this is to be true. Got a feeling he will take over Real Madrid.
