RMC Sport: How Milan and Lille struck a deal over €20.6m Leao fine to Sporting CP

By Oliver Fisher -

More intriguing information continues to arrive regarding the various terms of Rafael Leao’s now imminent extension with AC Milan.

RMC Sport have published a report which recaps the situation regarding the fine owed to Sporting CP. Back in 2018, the Portuguese winger decided to unilaterally terminate his contract Sporting after an attack on the training ground by fans, joining Lille on a free transfer.

On March 19, 2020, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered Leao to pay €16.5m to the Portuguese club, which had initiated proceedings before a Portuguese court to denounce the player’s unilateral breach of contract.

Sporting had also contacted FIFA, who determined that Lille were jointly liable and should therefore participate in the compensation of the fine that was owed.

The player then began shining with Milan and a renewal was desired by all parties, but a solution was needed on the fine issue with time running out and interest increasing, making the total amount €20.6m.

An agreement has been found: Leao will renew with Milan until 2028 and will get a very significant salary increase. Lille have agreed to pay €19.6m to Sporting (out of €20.6m), with the player paying €1m.

Milan have then agreeed to immediately reimburse the Ligue 1 side up to 90% – or around €18m – and they are betting on a virtually guaranteed capital gain from a future transfer.

In the end, Lille will pay just €2m out of their own pocket and will net money from a future sale, which will be for a large amount given his release clause will be over €100.

  1. Lille will get 15 % from next possible sale, but not more than 9 million €

So Milan already spent 18 million in next transfer market -_-

  2. So all the risk has gone to Milan’s side and Lille will potentially gain money instead of paying more?!
    Ridiculous!

  3. Selama Lille siap memberikan pemain pemain berbakat mereka kepada Milan …hal tersebut sangat menguntungkan Milan…

  4. I think the translation is wrong, this is how it actually could be:

    1. Lille will pay Sporting the fine
    2. Milan will pay Lille 90% of that amount
    3. Lille will lose the 15 % clause from Leaos new contract

If Milan sales Leao in future, Milan will get 100% of the money

  5. So if Milan sold leao in the future, lille have their maximum 18m from milan which is their own money to be paid to sporting as a fine. Nett money from the future. Actually it’s good business, but when ?? Hehehe…
