Romagnoli contradicts Pioli after humiliating Spezia defeat: “We underestimated them”

By Isak Möller -

Alessio Romagnoli, just like the rest of his teammates, didn’t have the best of outings last night as Spezia comfortably beat Milan 2-0. The captain was brutally honest about the performance after the game.

The Rossoneri could have used the win to boost their confidence ahead of the derby next weekend. Instead, they could find themselves in second place and that makes the clash against Inter even more important.

In his post-match interview, Stefano Pioli insisted that Milan didn’t underestimate Spezia. Romagnoli, on the other hand, stated that they did and hopes that they can bounce back straight away (see below with subtitles).

“We got the approach wrong, they did better than us. We lacked pressing and had poor build-up play. We clearly had the wrong approach and they deserved to win. We underestimated them and I hope we can put this defeat behind us immediately.”

The Rossoneri will face Red Star Belgrade mid-week in the Europa League and the derby is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Two games that could indeed define the rest of the season for them.

  1. I have more and more doubts about Romagnoli’s play and whether he should be our captain. A year or two ago no doubts. But last year and this year he has been average. Our captain should always be one of the best players on the pitch. Many games he has def not been. Overall Kajer has been more consistent than Romagnoli and recent signing Tomori has been much better. Not sure what is going on but he certainly isn’t a player worth 5-6M per season Raiola is asking for. He needs to step up. As captain his job is to be consistent every game and be one of the best players on the pitch every night and lift the team. I just haven’t seen that last season nor this season. I am starting to question if he is worth a big contract extension and if we should perhaps look for his eventual replacement. He really needs to shine rest of the season for us to invest 6M a year in him…if he doesn’t rather spend the $ elsewhere. Perhaps that is why Maldini is after Lovato, sees him as eventual replacement…

  2. How many times i said that romagnoli is not fit on milan who have a plan to play in CL and become scudetto. He can play at dark age but now romagnoli cant keep up his level. Even calabria and gabbia defend better than him by statistic. For that big amount of salary, hell no, tomori far better. Hope pioli can keep up his level to champion level, he also face a problem that he cant solve

  3. Milan fans be so fickle. During our worst of times Romagnoli stood by us instead of transferring at a time when he had many suitors. Our league position and status would been far worse.if he had left. Plus he did not ask for a wage increase at a time when he deserved it. But we’re so quick to downplay all of that for a few games where he hasn’t shone or has been at his best.
