Romano: Juventus want Kalulu – player gives green light with €17m offer sent

Juventus have opened talks with AC Milan to sign French defender Pierre Kalulu and the Bianconeri have already submitted a €17m bid.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Kalulu himself has actually given the green light to what would be an initial loan deal with an option to make it permanent next summer.

Juventus would be paying €3m for the loan during the 2024/25 season and would then be able to buy Kalulu outright for €14m next summer if the move is a good fit.

Kalulu had a very truncated 2023/24 season as he struggled with injuries and failed to build on the promise of his early Milan career.

The expectation coming into this summer was that Milan would listen to offers for the former Lyon man, but it remains to be seen whether they would be willing to send him on loan to a direct rival.

The buy option also appears lower than what many would expect Milan to demand for Kalulu given he undoubtedly has quality and is still only 24 years old.

Milan would almost certainly need to enter the market for a new central defender if they allowed Kalulu to move to Juventus this summer but the priority is a midfielder and a striker.

      1. give me dates of him playing more than 15 games in a row without getting injured… this weird notion as if he’s anyway close to what he was 3 years ago.

    1. But right now we need to sell/loan out 2 players. And if we want to sign one more Midfielder, we need to sell 1 more.

      If Kalulu leave, in first team we still have 4 CB and 2 RB. That’s enough, I assume – maybe the RB experiment was a failure and one of CB need to leave, as we definitely don’t need 5 CBs.

      With Tomori, Pavlović, Gabbia and Thiaw at CB, and Calabria plus Emerson Royal at RB, we will be well covered, numerically at least.

      1. Our problem is we have 6 wingers not an excess of cbs. We got 27 players atm and one injured florenzi, doubt he will be registered anywhere. Origi and ballo are in futuro.
        Take away 2 wingers and boom 25 players and one injured florenzi

          we only have 6 HG players right now from 8 needed (Gabbia, Calabria, Terraciano, Pobega, Sportiello, Florenzi) so right now we only can register 23. if we dont register florenzi, we can only register 22.

            other option : Saelemakers, Okafor as CF/LW back up.

          2. the only way we can add more player without selling additional players : buy homegrown players. but because from 8 HG, there can only be maximum 4 association trained (not from our own club) then we can only buy 1 more player from other team.

            therefore, Chiesa, Kayode, Folorunsho, Ricci… can be added without problem

          4. @turtle the missing GK is a youth product of Milan, and he is still 19. he dont add or reduce anything from this list.

            even if we add him doesnt change the fact that we need to sell 2 players right now, or they will just getting salary and wont ever play because they dont get into the first team squad.

        An ageing player is precisely the one that would understand their role as a sub. Meanwhile Kalulu is 5th in the pecking order as a CB, and possibly 3rd as an RB. His contract expires in 2007. Why wouldn’t you sell him for 17M this summer when you paid 500k for him? What do you think he will fetch next summer with one year left and minimal minutes played after 3 seasons of mediocrity and injury? The dude hasn’t been good since the scudetto season and that was in 2021-22. 17M for Kalulu is a take the money and run deal. Hermosa would be a great replacement: experience, left foot, can play as an LB. His increased salary over Kalulu is both irrelevant, if the club is willing to pay it, and also more affordable if there is no transfer fee. Player impacts on the budget are calculated in their cumulative value: salary plus transfer fee. So 15M transfer fee and 1M per year for 5 years (20M) is the same as a free signing at 4M per year salary for 5 years. So in terms of total outlay, Hermoso wouldn’t be that expensive. Further, lack of resale value is rendered because….he’s free. There would be no book loss. Hermosa would be the spiritual successor to the Kjaer role plus being left footed and able to play at leftback. IMO, Kalulu out and Hermoso in is a great move, if true.

        1. You bring in Hermoso for 9M gross and bench the cb you just paid 18M for. Just so you can sell another cb for 17M, in 2025…
          It’s a bad deal. And Hermoso is as likely to flop as he is 2 succeeded. Gotta wonder, top 5 leagues start in a week or so. Why nobody signed him yet? If he’s oh so good a defender…

          1. When did I say Hermoso would start? Even if Hermoso joins, I’d give the first crack at the LCB starting spot to Pavlovic. I expect the starting duo to be Pavlovic and Tomori or Thiaw. Hermoso would start every now and then at LB or LCB, plus any injuries or suspensions. Basically the Kjaer role, but a little younger and a little more expensive salary-wise, but ultimately more versatile.

          2. With a 9M salary he starts. Idk in what world does Milan have a 9M salary player as a sub but it definitely isn’t in this one. I’m just realistic.

            Also, you’re hermoso, you negotiate with Milan to sign for them, do you think Hermoso as a professional player is content with being a sub?

      Hermoso will bring much experience to the team and he can also play LB. So we can offload Kalulu who in my opinion is not b that good.

After that, Pioli changed the way they played and the defense suffered (not only Kalulu). Watch the game (it’s on you-toube) at the San Siro against Atalanta 2:0, how Kalula played. He can reach that level of play easily. 2. Sell it to a direct competitor 3 million loan and 14 buyback??? If Kalulu was an Atalanta player, Juventus would have to pay him 30 million, but Milan is the kind of club that has enough crumbs. 3. because of everything, it is a bad idea to sell the player.

In rb there are really only Calabria and Royal and in CB he is 5th player to play…I don’t think he will play in Juve’s starting 11… You are right, we don’t need to sell, but Kalulu give Green Light to play for Juve, he know there is not much space for him and now it looks like he want to go.. I love him , but I don’ see minutes for him in AC and he come for free , 20m€ is great business for such a player after almost year without playing because of his injure
          There was article about his starting spot under Fonseca and true is he was on the bench every game in US and I don’t think he will play tomorow against Monza

  12. We are competing in 3 tournaments this season. We need depth. Fonseca’s style of play needs good rotation. If Juve wanted Kalulu, they should have moved earlier. Not 1 week to start of season.

  17. Never. He is potentially our best CB and can play RB as well. The potential of Kalulu is much higher than Tomori. And you should never sell at the lowest point.
    Of course if we sell for 40m would be different, but for 17m would be a huge mistake.

The management really need to earn to sell high. 17m is too small for his quality and room for improvement. 20m least is a go. and the management can get the Atletico Madrid guy Hermoso for free to replace him.   21. 3 millions for a loan is still a capital gain for a player who cost us a 200k compensation. And we need to ship out players. If it works out we get more money, if it doesn’t, he’s still young and talented and can be either used as a backup or sold to some EPL midtable club. He gave the green light so he’s already decided and packing.

    But I’d rather see 3+17 to round it up to potential 20 million deal.

    If a player had long injury then it doesn’t mean sell everyone. This is not how football works.

    Considering the field we had last 2years in san siro and medical team we had, we cannot blame players for everything.

    But humans have less memory especially Milan fans on Sempremilan are the best version of short memory.

  31. Weird comments to effectively swap him with Chiesa, Hermoso or Hummels. Each of those players is on 2-4x Kalulu’s salary.

    There is a reason for us to move him on, but those look like very low numbers for a loan with an option – that deal would be very favourable to Juventus. However, we do need to move one or two players on just to make the space to register the current squad.

    Loaning him without the option (and with a Jan recall clause) surely would make more sense for us, or selling outright, but loan with a low option would be the worst of both worlds.

  32. To anyone approving this sale, you guys are forgetting he is the best RB we have besides emerson… We still have Calabria there and I’d rather complete the quota of ingrown with gabbia and a Gk, than have calabrias defending there and a new contract.

    To put into context, kalulu plays bad? At least he plays… Calabrias playing is conparable to placing 20usd of ground beef on the ground in his position and still be better than him…

    He’s versatile and can cover both positions, but in who’s place? Financially, makes a lot of sense to offload, since we picked him up for what, like a mil? 17-20mil is a serious gain on him.

    BUT, selling him to a direct rival is a mistake. Motta has a way of getting the best out of players, and Kalulu has been needing to improve and get the Scudetto form back out onto the field after so many setbacks. Remains to be seen how long it will take Motta to get the best out of Juve this season, but we shouldn’t be helping him by offloading Kalulu to them.

    Of course if no one is banging on our door for him, then Juve may be our only option. And we all know the squad needs to be trimmed.

    I doubt they will look to replace Kalulu either, unless a good opportunity presents itself.

    IF he wants to leave then it has to be a straight purchase of 20M or more.

    No loans w/ options – that is horrible deal for us. You don’t give him to a direct competitor for a cheap loan of 3M. That would be another horrible deal (Simic) from Furlani.

    If Juve wants him so bad AND he WANTS to leave (which I get as he seems to be behind Tomori Pav Gabbia and Thiaw at CB and behind Emerson and Calabria at RB) – straight 20M + deal so we have $$$$ NOW
