Romano: Man Utd could add insult to injury as Dutch duo fade for Milan

AC Milan have been linked with Mats Wieffer and Joshua Zirkzee this summer as they look to reinforce both the midfield and the attack. However, the former’s move to Brighton has been made official and Man Utd are on the striker, a report claims.

Wieffer was mentioned as one of the key midfield targets just a couple of weeks ago and Milan even opened talks. However, Brighton announced the signing of the 24-year-old yesterday (for around €30m) and the Rossoneri will now have to shift focus to Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana.

According to Fabrizio Romano, another Dutch target could fade for Milan as Man Utd have held new talks with Zirkzee’s agent to discuss the salary and commission. Erik ten Hag has been on the phone with the striker several times and the English side will soon make a final decision.

Milan are still in the race but for each day that passes, it’s getting more and more difficult. Alvaro Morata has now emerged as another target of the Rossoneri, willing to pay his release clause, and it remains to be seen what the Spaniard’s response will be.

The pre-season will start next week and as things stand, Paulo Fonseca will rely on Lorenzo Colombo and Francesco Camarda for the first training sessions.

  1. If we go by the latests rumors, it might seem we already had given up on Zirkzee. I wouldn’t say it’s unwise, since Kia’s comissions don’t make sense. But with Dovbyk seemingly staying in Girona, we might have fewer options than we thought.
Among the names that are popping up recently (Gimenez, Morata, Lukaku,…) Morata seems to be the least bad one.

  2. Well if Wieffer agreed to go to Brighton, which is a ridiculous move (he would be playing at higher level even with Feyenoord), then it might not really be that good signing after all.

Around Zirzkee a lot has been told already, not worth it. So I wouldn’t say it’s “insulting” for Milan – that is, of course, if they would land some good midfielder and good striker.

    1. It’s very easy to understand.

The same reasons why Juventus is losing Calafiori to Arsenal and thousands of other transfers in the last 15-20 years.
EPL clubs are financially superior to Serie A clubs

        1. He would be lucky to get game time at Arsenal, ManU, or Liverpool. Brighton is an incredible success story and now attracts some of the best young talent. Young players come to the world class facilities at Brighton for the next step in their development. If they’re on top of their form then they will be selected to play in a modern expansive style against the very best of the Premier League. This exposure will showcase their readiness and place them on the radar of those clubs where they would have just warmed the bench.
This year Brighton have taken giant steps in an effort to avoid a repeat of last season’s injury debacle that saw them second in lost players minutes, although they still managed to finish 11th.

        2. ACM 1989 Brighton actually has been very profitable in the league. Their success under Potter solidified that.
Remember how Forrest was spending big when they got promoted?
Mid table team get more money than champion of series A.

        3. Well, it’s not a surprise just like what president Scaroni said, Serie A today is only comparable to second division of English Premier League in term of financial might. Even last season we have to compete against Leeds for CDK, and Leeds actually can paid more, just the player wanted to go to Milan. Plus Brighton has always been profitable, with the sales of Caceido, Cucurella and Potter to Chelsea alone gave them more than 100 million.

  3. They will fix problem by adding some better players on 3 other position. Central forward will be in style of Ibrahimovic or Giroud. So Morata seems like obvious signing for me.

If Lukaku don’t go to Saudi Arabia, possibility is for Milan to take him on loan. Of course because of good connection with Chelsea.

We don’t need to forget about Okafor and Leao who can in case of emergency cover Central forward position. Together with Jovic.

It is no good to spend everything on Zirkzee who scored only 12 goals last year.

Manchester United ? OK they spend over 100 on Atalanta player and later they finish outside Europe.

  4. man Zirkzee is worth 100m according to the geniuses here Milan should just overpay so they can flex about it on twitter

  5. Inter, Juventus, Napoli, Atalanta, Roma, Lazio, Fiorentina move on . ….. milan remain stuck and continue to make fools of themselves. Not even one single buy – just empty talk – ibra, moncada and furlani are a trio of idiots who think they are clever and wise.

  6. Zirkee was never worth 55mil, and weiffer clearly chose money over club, so let him go. He can enjoy his high wage and midtable obscurity. Sign Fofana and then get a striker in the door

    1. Yep Ian that’s the problem with Moncada management he still has to make the Fofana signing.
The signing maybe as difficult as pulling a rabbit out of the hat?
Fonseca is Milan trump card to win Scudetto?
Ha ha that’s a funny statement!
