Romano: Milan inform Bologna they will trigger Zirkzee clause – a ‘crucial point’ awaits

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have told Bologna that they will trigger his release clause and now they will work on agreeing terms to wrap up the deal, a report claims.

Zirkzee burst onto the scene during a breakout season with Bologna in 2023-24, scoring 12 goals across all competitions with 11 of them coming in the league.

At 23 years of age the feeling is that he will only grow, and he also added seven assists to his goal tally last season which shows that he is a creative forward.

Milan meanwhile are in the market for a new striker and someone to wear the No.9 shirt for years to come, which means that on paper this could be a marriage made in heaven.

According to what is being reported by Fabrizio Romano, Milan informed Bologna that they are planning to trigger the €40m release clause for Zirzkee, which is active in the summer transfer window.

Talks now ongoing between the Rossoneri management and the Dutchman’s entourage to agree on personal terms, which the journalist claims is a ‘crucial point’ in the entire negotiation.

In a further boost for Geoffrey Moncada and his collaborators, Romano states that Zirzkee is ‘happy to stay in Italy and super keen on the Milan project’.

  1. The kind of no 9 we’ll be getting can be a good reflection of the management motivation. This is the news we’re longing to hear.

  2. The perfect signing if we do indeed get him. I’m personally not convinced by him (not that I watched too many Bologna games), but this who are technical department wanted the most all along. A clear statement by the management

  3. Something doesn’t add up for me in this situation. And it’s not even about whether Zirkzee is worth such money or not, but Bayern position in all that. That is, in Netherlands there were dozens of reports from various sources that Kompany wants Zirkzee in Bayern. And they can get him for really discounted price (25mil EUR) as they have buyback priority.

And even if they wouldn’t want him, then knowing Milan is seriously interested and submits an offer to Bologna for 40mil EUR, why wouldn’t they claim the buyback for 25mil EUR right now, and they would be ones to talk with Milan. They get 15mil EUR (or maybe even more as they are free to negotiate) literally for free. Unless there is some gotcha in their agreement that media do not know about.

    1. Fair points, but I think the will of the player also plays a role. If Bayern has reached out to his entourage, and they’ve said “we won’t sign any contract with Bayern”, Bayern can trigger any clauses they want, but the player is not compelled to sign a contract, so they won’t get him. It could very well be he has his heart set on Milan, or at the very least not returning to Bayern.

      1. True, that would be the solid answer to my thoughts. Especially if at Bayern he would be just a bench player, as there is no way Kane would not be a starter, whereas at Milan he would be number 1.

      2. Remember they have Kane and don’t actually need zirkzee and have an early buyer in the market. There could be agent fees and taxes to pay on the buy which might not leave enough meat on the bone for bayern to bother with and then have the role of finding a buyer later in the market when teams might have gone elsewhere. Also they probably have a sell on clause that gives them the difference in money they are after just by letting another team buy direct from bologna

      1. Marvo that’s completely untrue in that case because it’s a clause pre-agrement. Chelsea sign Kovacic while serving transfer ban. If an agreement was in place still valid the rule doesn’t apply. Martin Demichellis signed for City and AT Madrid same transfer window

      2. No. The rules say :

        – a player can only registered in maximum 3 clubs in a season, and
        – a player eligible to play official matches in only 2 club.

So for Zirkzee case it’s no problem at all.

      3. Well, they can use KPB transfer model, bought by Genoa, and then loaned immediately to Milan, then permanent deal the next season.

    2. They have 40% percent resale clause. If anyone buys Zikrzee from Bologna for 40mln, around 15 goes to Bayern anyway. So they don’t have to buy and resell themselves.

    3. There was no truth about the Bayern rumour, the press simply put 2 + 2 together, because he played for Kompany at Anderlecht. Bayern have Tel, WTF would they sign Zirkzee for? He wouldn’t have agreed to the move, Kompany is nothing as a coach.

  4. Zirkzee is not a number 9 but he is young and he has the potential to be a top player. The only question is whether or not Milan also intends to sign another striker who is a number 9.

I would have preferred if Milan invested that 40m on Artem Dovbyk who in my opinion is the type of striker we need to replace Giroud.

Okafor is a CF and it’s only Pioli who seems to think that he is a winger. Maybe Fonseca will use Okafor as our number 9?

Just seems strange for Milan to pursue Zirkzee who only has 1 good season like Piatek instead of a striker like Dovbyk who is a better fit and a proven goal scorer in a lone striker formation.

    1. He’s been a first team regular for 3 seasons, he played in Bayern’s youth team. He’s represented every level of youth football for his country, from U15-U21. That is in no way comparable to any ‘one season wonder’, it’s a sign of steady progression.

  5. The problem with this transfer is that even if it’s true that Milan want to pay the clause, they also have to deal with the commissions.

If they pay the commission to Kia, then it sets a precedent and opens them up to higher demands from other agents on future deals.

If they don’t pay the commission then other agents will try to avoid sending their clients to Milan to get higher commission elsewhere.

Damned if you do, Damned if you don’t.

    1. At some point these agents need to be brought under control. Agent fees should be capped at a small percentage – they simply aren’t providing enough value to the players to justify $10M fees. Why should a player be okay with this? That $10M is money that could have gone to them as a signing bonus or an increased salary.

      1. Because the money to the agents doesn’t come from the player. It comes form the club purchasing the player. Players simply sit back and watch the agents drive up their salaries… While the clubs have to shell out for the player AND the agent.

      2. Is hould be brought under control, but also it’s not that anyone is forcing these players to sign agreements with agents. They choose to do it to have better exposure to teams and so that agents would represent them, fight for better contracts and negotiate various terms.

I also hate these commissions, but not sure if there is anything anyone can do to stop that. The only way would be for all big clubs to say stop and just not pay. Because right now if only Milan would say stop, and Juve/Inter/Bayern/City etc would keep paying, then Milan just wouldn’t get some players and they’ll keep doing that.

        1. fifa could ban commission paid by a club to agent as they do not represent the club and require any payments go directly to the player. While this won’t stop agents making money it will put the onus on the player. I’m sure they will care once they have to move money from own bank account to agent and now liable for taxes on that extra money directly paid to them.

        2. That won’t happen, because the commissions that the likes of ManCity and Madrid can afford dwarf anything the likes of Bologna can pay…

    2. The fact that Milan have informed they’d like to activate the release cause, it means that we already settled that commission issue. Whether we worked on lowering the number or such. By the end of the day that kind of thing will never be reported formally too.

      1. …Milan have “SUPPOSEDLY” informed they’d like to activate the release cause…

Kia can easily derail this if he doesn’t get the commission he wants.

        1. Well, true, but 1. news comes from Fabrizio which is proven to be quite legit, 2. it makes sense what @Ibrahimba mentions, Milan wouldn’t activate the clause if they wouldn’t already have an agreement with agent about commission. Especially as Milan was aware that it could be problematic.

        2. Except we’re facing a release clause here. If the news is true, well it’s Romano we’re talking about, when a party informs the other party involved that they’ll make a bid according to the release clause, they’re basically in a full agreement. The selling party can’t do anything, and the buying party can’t just simply retract their official bid. So basically they’re all already aware on any t & cs.

        3. Arsenal aren’t interested in Zirkzee nor are Bayern, despite the lazy claims by the press. That only leaves Milan and Juve, and Juve have large debts, we don’t.

  6. Bayern is not getting him for 25M. They have like 30% of his next sale, so thats why it is that they can have him for 25M. If AC Milan or any other club buys him, Bayern will get it’s share of 30% of the total payment received.

  7. What i like about zirkzee is his movement and ability on the ball.. he can move deeper or a bit to the side to open up space for others to move in.. while also good at holding up the play by using his body and height.
On top of that, he has a pretty good technical ability that makes him not easy to get disposses by a defender.
Yes he is not a great goalscorer yet.. because if he is.. he’ll be worth 80-90m.

Our off the ball movement and build up play is bad under pioli, that is why is hard for us to break a solid defense.. mostly relying on individual brilliance or transition. That is why we can beat napoli last year, because they play very open. Plus our defense is so bad because no defensive minded midfielder in our squad to help the defense.

  8. If he can score the same goal than the one he scored against Inter when we’ll play them, he’ll soon become a fan favorite. He wouldn’t be my first choice considering his profile ans stats but it’s better than some no name or Jovic and at least he knows Serie A. There would still be some money left in the budget, please don’t waste it on Maguire or Emerson Royal. Extend Mike and Théo, seal the deal with Fofana, find a solid defensive midfielder and a good backup striker.

  9. Commissions that are 25-30% of the entire fee. I’m not comfortable with this at all. And for a player that scored 12 goals. I’d rather Dovbyk.
