Romano: Milan point to Leao’s €175m clause but PSG talks could heat up in May

By Isak Möller -

In recent weeks, Rafael Leao has been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain as the latter will say goodbye to their star Kylian Mbappe in the summer. However, as Fabrizio Romano reports, AC Milan continue to refer to the €175m release clause.

It’s been a season filled with ups and downs for Leao, still without a goal in the league since September, and his most recent display against Rennes was rather poor. He ended up scoring in that clash, but struggled to impose himself before that and missed a few good chances.

In his Daily Briefing newsletter, as relayed by CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano commented on the PSG rumours by stating that Leao is fully focused on the current season. Milan also have the €175m release clause as protection, having renewed Leao’s contract in June, though a lower offer could be accepted.

“Whether PSG would provide an offer that meets Milan’s expectations for Rafa Leao would involve a pure guess job from me and I’d never do that… Leao has a €175m release clause, let’s see if clubs will try to get close to that number to open talks with Milan but nothing has happened so far.

“These kinds of deals enter into important stages around May/June, never in February or March.

“I can also guarantee that Leao doesn’t want any distraction until the end of this season and also “social media” fans demanding his sale after his performance against Rennes in the Europa League are not all the fans. I live in Milano and I can guarantee that Milan fans absolutely love Rafa Leao,” he stated.

It remains to be seen what will happen in the summer but in the face of a big offer, the Rossoneri could perhaps sell their star. A lot will also depend on the remainder of the season, as a good individual run for Leao could help increase the price tag (though still lower than the cause).
