Romano: Milan move forward in Loftus-Cheek talks with agreement over ‘long term contract’ close

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are close to agreeing personal terms with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and are confident they will strike a deal with Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Romano has published an update on his Twitter profile confirming that Milan are ‘close’ to finding an agreement with Loftus-Cheek over what would be a ‘long term contract’ after direct contacts were started two weeks ago.

In addition to that, talks between Milan and Chelsea are ongoing to reach a full agreement over a transfer fee, given it would be a permanent deal with the midfielder’s current contract running out in June 2024.

The journalist add that ‘all parties are hopeful and optimistic’ that everything gets agreed, with Milan needing midfield reinforcements after Ismael Bennacer’s injury and Chelsea under pressure to offload players.

The Blues have had a disappointing campaign and must trim the squad down after spending big both last summer and in the January transfer window.

  1. Not sold that he is the right player for the club, but if he does come ill support him. Hopefully he will be something like Tomori, Chelsea reject but flourish at the club.

    1. Calling players who were supplanted by big money signing “rejects”, particularly those that came up through the academy, is harsh. Some clubs with big money will buy because they can, not because they need to.

    2. Not sold on him either, but for a while players coming from the Premier League seem to thrive (except maybe Origi) since they’re much faster. Hope he stays fit

  2. IF we add these players to our midfield and Attack we should be good:

    RLC (MC) – 20M
    SMS (CAM) -35M
    Kamada (CAM/RW) – Free
    Zaniolo (RW) -20M + BaloToure
ElShaarawy (LW and back-up to Leao) – Free
    Openda (CF) – 20M
    Jackson (CF) – 15M

    “Only 110M”

So we need to sell a few players 🙂 No biggie!

    1. How many CFs do we need? And why would one of Openda and Jackson agree to come to us when they know they will be behind the other? Also, since teams usually roll two deep per position, if Kamada arrives (now very likely) we won’t need SMS since we also have CDK. We won’t need SMS at CM either if “RLC” arrive. So let’s forget about SMS because it’s not likely. Finally, I’d rather Orsolini than Zaniolo. Cheaper too at 10-15m. So what we will probably have is:

      RLC – 20m
      Kamada – Free
      RW TBD0 – 25-30m
      SES – Free
      [one] Striker TBD – 25-30m

And that’s the ~70-80m budget being bandied about (including ~25m sales).

        1. As to strikers, there is Colombo. I’m just not sure that a player like Openda or Jackson, who are just breaking through and have an opportunity to lead the line somewhere would settle for no. 2 or no. 3. As to deputies for Leao and Theo, ok, I was talking about starters, but for Leao at the moment El Shaarawy is on the radar and I like that idea, and as to Theo there is Bozzolan or maybe even a name that hasn’t been yet discussed. The primary concern of this article, and the most pressing needs are starters. Keep in mind that Kamada, Loftus-Cheek, Openda/Jackson/whatever, and a rightwinger can all arrive without having to sell anyone, except for maybe one of Messias and Salad because there would be three RWs then. And yes this includes Diaz going back to Madrid (not a sale).

      1. Openda can serve as CF and RW maybe cus his physicality. SMS can serve as DMF CMF RMF AMF. Daichikun can also play as DMF CMF RMF AMF. RLC?

      2. @Vero.. good points. SMS will bring the much needed guarantee of performance though which Kamada/RLC will not considering how long it takes for Pioli to integrate a player to his ‘system’.

After RLC and Kamada, what we would really need is a solution at the RW. To be honest, I see no viable target for a rw at the moment unless MMM pulls a rabbit out of the hat. No matter who we sign, lack of a RW is gonna make us suffer badly in attack. Neither Orsolini, nor Zaniolo seems to be an upgrade over Saele specially outcome wise.

As for ST, Openda or Wahi would be great. Also, we have signed the atalanta GK as Maignan backup.

  3. I dont know how good he is but I hope he doesnt get injured that often. Because he seemed to be Injured a lot

  4. I think this would be a positive move. He will re-unite with Tomori which will hopefully be good for the morale of both.

  5. Deputy Maignan – Sportielo (Done)
    Deputy Bennacet – Kamada (Done)
    Deputy Leao – none
    Deputy Theo – none
    Deputy Giroud – None
    Replacement Diaz – None
Starting level Right wing – None

    way to go!

  6. He is a very bad choice, very weak technically, he’s for me even worse then Krunic in this aspect.
He can’t play in a 2 central midfielders line, as he’s also not good enough tactically, he lose his position, he can’t pass, he can’t score. so why on earth do we need him for a lot of money (a lot for our standards).
We don’t need backups from weak teams, he wasn’t starting even when Lampard arrives first time on Chelsea and they were banned to not transfer anyone. We need players who have a full-time season on field, fighting for a first-team place. There are many other central midfielders: Frattesi, Cacqueret and that’s why we have a Scouting department, to find better guys.
Loftus-Cheek is a joke, c’mon, he plays football as much as I do with my friends in park, 30 minutes every two weeks.

  7. Not the biggest fan of this move but hopefully I’m proven wrong.
He was trending upwards before he tore his Achilles, and since then he hasn’t been the same player.
Plus he is more offensive than defensive midfielder, so if they plan to play him in the double pivot I have major concerns with his defensive effort and awareness.
If Milan plays with a 3 man midfield he might be a better fit.
Hopefully he has the same effect as Anguissa has had with Napoli since he moved there from the EPL

  8. O asked one of Chelsea fans in my area. They said this guy has been with Chelsea since Michael Obi time. They said he failed to improve all this while. I just hope Milan is not making mistake with this guy.
