Romano: Centre-back ‘keen to move’ as Milan open talks with RB Salzburg

With the European Championship coming to an end, we can expect the mercato to start to liven, and AC Milan have opened talks with one of their favoured options in a key position.

Milan come into this window in a fantastic place, even if it seems like there is a lot to be achieved in the mercato.

Whilst the previous season was a failure by many accounts, there is a very solid platform to build on, and Paulo Fonesca has known which areas need improvement for a while now. Of course, the first step is to identify talent, but then the next is to pursue it, and the Rossoneri are beginning this step.

Before the window’s opening, reports suggested that Milan will sign players in four main positions as a priority, with opportunities elsewhere being considered as well. At the top of the list, the focuses were a striker and a central defender, and a report suggests that the Diavolo have made the opening steps to sign a player in the latter position.

According to Fabrizio Romano on his X account, the club have opened talks with RB Salzburg to sign central defender Strahinja Pavlovic. The 23-year-old had a fantastic season in Austria, and his form continued into the European Championship.

A left-footed central defender was among Fonseca’s top priorities – as he wants a partner for Fikayo Tomori – and given the defender is ‘keen on the move’, if the figures are right it could be a deal that is quick to finalise.

  1. I’ve no doubt this management will meet up good targets, last season Mercato has been the best we have had in over 10 seasons and 90% of them arrived and are very functional for the team, we need to complete that trend by actual needs not by each fans desire for certain good players that are not the needed uplift for the team, however no matter what is done the hatters will keep hating even at a mere conjecture they want to pour out there frustration because things did not go the exact way they want in there heads, I hope Y’all bunch of unhappy folks get a better team to support nd just leave MILAN for the fans that believe in its certain nd well destined growth into the giant it as always been, FORZA MILAN ALWAYS 🔴⚫️

    1. If we get Fofana, Morata, Pavlovic and Emerson Royale Im happy with this mercato. Thats good replacements/strengthening of 4 key positions.

I do also want them to get a good deputy for Theo. Either make Bartesaghi part of the first team as a homegrown player and something for the future. Or release/give away Ballo-Toure and sign a good backup like Kiwor who can play both LB and CB.

      1. Royal is useless, we already have like 6 RB and he is just a poor man’s Calabria, waste of money. Fofana might be good but he is not a true DM, we might still need a true DM like Hojbjerg (who happens to be from Tottentham and around the same price as Royal, just saying). Morata at best is a younger Giroud, so not really an “upgrade” but rather a replacement. We also need to adress the issu of not having enough Italians for UEFA quotas.

        1. Fonseca plays in 4231, why would we need a true DM ? Please tell me? Fofana is strong physically which in any case a profile we don’t have at all at the moment. Also let me remind you that inter crushed everybody last year with no true DM, they had Hakan Barella and Henrik , 3 of them if they were under Pioli would have been a disaster. It’s not just about the players but the system so let’s have a little trust in Fonsecas judgement

          1. We have more players suited for a 4-3-3 than a 4-2-3-1. But even assuming 4-2-3-1, Fofana always played with more defensive profiles either in Monaco or in France, so he is not exactly the defensive profile we’re looking for, he is just Musah if Musah was actually good. Inter plays a 3-5-2, already more defensive with a more stacked midfield, that system doesn’t require the same type of midfielders as a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.

    2. Cry harder. Last season we bought 4 players we didn’t need, just because. The other 4 did fine, sure. That’s a 50/50 success/fail rate

      1. Keep calm fellas Milan have not signed anyone yet.
Last year they talk about signed players, as if Milan won a trophy.
Milan lost games that were vital. They lost to all the big teams especially Inter, both derby matches and the year before as well.

        1. People talk. People are also stupid. So people talk, stupidity comes out. It is what it is. This summer won’t be any different.

Milan lost games because pioli didn’t evolve with the team. It was a miracle that the other clubs were even worse than us and we managed to finish second.

  2. I prefer calafiori left footed CB but ACM cannot use 50m euro budget just for CB . Pavlovic only cost half from calafiori , lets hope he can form good partnership with tomori

  3. Good player, good signing. Austrian sides have improved in the last 5 years. They have good football development and he fits the age and the profile we are after. I just hope we dont sacrifice thiew or kalulu for him.

  4. Next we’ll hear about how RB Leipzig has signed Pavlovic for 25M, too high for us. Then in two seasons he will transfer from Leipzig to the PL for 60M.

  5. Id rather the first team should have a lot players from the primavera. The young players already win at youth european championship with italian side, and the level club runner up UCL youth league last season. They should level up to senior team.

The talent already there like bartesaghi, camarda, raveyre, zeroli, malaspina, mancioppi.

  6. He’s a good addition if we get him under 20mil. The issue is, we needed him in addition to Thiaw and Tomori. Now there’s rumors of offloading Thiaw, which puts us one step back if true.
