Luka Modric has been a key player for AC Milan this season and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by Real Madrid, who believe they made a mistake.

Milan secured Modric on a free transfer last summer as his contract with Real Madrid expired. The Croatian veteran signed with a modest salary, around €3.5m net, and immediately got to work at Milanello with his new teammates and manager.

30 league starts later, out of a possible 32, it’s clear that Modric has been one of the best signings this season. Definitely in Serie A, and maybe even in Europe’s top five leagues, as he hasn’t just added leadership but also quality on the pitch.

Lesson learned

In his latest YouTube video, which focused solely on the situation at Real Madrid, Fabrizio Romano discussed Dani Carvajal who could leave on a free transfer. Losing another leader in the squad, however, isn’t something they would like to do.

As the journalist states, some ‘important people’ at Real Madrid believe that losing Modric on a free transfer was a big mistake last summer. It’s hard to argue against that given the performances with Milan.

“There are some people at Real Madrid, within the club, some really important people, who believe losing Luka Modric on a free transfer last summer was a mistake. A really big problem in terms of leadership,” he stated.
